Pt-Ni alloy nanocrystals with Pt-enriched shells were prepared by selective etching of surface Ni using sulfuric acid and *** changes in the electronic and geometric structure of the alloy nanoparticles at the surface were elucidated from the electrochemical surface area,the potential of zero total charge(PZTC),and relative surface roughness,which were determined from CO-and CO_(2)-displacement experiments before and after 3000 potential cycles under oxygen reduction reaction *** the highest activity and durability were achieved in hydroquinone-treated Pt–Ni,sulfuric acidtreated one showed the lower activity and durability despite its higher surface Pt concentration and alloying *** PZTC and QCO_(2)/QCO ratio(desorption charge of reductively adsorbed CO_(2) normalized by COad-stripping charge)depend on surface *** particular,QCO_(2)/QCO ratio change better reflects the roughness on an atomic scale,and PZTC is also affected by the electronic modification of Pt atoms in surface *** this study,a comparative study is presented to find a relationship between surface structure and electrochemical properties,which reveals that surface roughness plays a critical role to improve the electrochemical performance of Pt-Ni alloy catalysts with Pt-rich surfaces.

Comparison of the clinical efficacy of medical treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia between normal and obese patients

We aimed to investigate the difference in efficacy of medical treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） between normal and obese patients with BPH; obesity was determined by either body mass index （BMI） or waist circumference （WC）. In this 12-week prospective observational study, a total of 175 patients aged ≥40 years with International Prostate Symptom Scores （IPSS） ≥12 points and prostate volume≥20 ml were prospectively enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups according to BMI or WC. Patients received the doxazosin gastrointestinal therapeutic system （GITS） at a dose of 4 mg once per day for 12 weeks. The changes from baseline in the IPSS, maximal urinary flow rate （Qmax）, post-void residual volume, quality of life （QoL） scores and adverse events （AEs） were analysed. Of the 175 enrolled patients, 132 completed the study. Sixty-seven patients had BMI 〉23 kg m-2, and 43 had WC 〉90 cm. Obese patients represented by WC 〉90 cm or BMI≥ 23 kg m-2 had a significantly greater prostate volume compared with non-obese patients at baseline. Total IPSS was significantly higher in the WC 〉90 cm group compared to the WC ≤ 90 cm group. Total I PSS was positively correlated with prostate volume （P=-0.031） and WC （P=0.045）. All groups showed significant improvements in total IPSS and QoL at 12 weeks. However, the improvement of total IPSS was greater in the high-BMI and high-WC groups. The most frequent AE was dizziness （n= 13）, and it was significantly lower in the obese BPH patients. Obesity was associated with increased prostate volume and lower urinary tract symptoms. Alpha-blockers appear to be efficacious for controlling symptoms, especially in obese men.

While participation in Social Network Sites （SNSs） has grown rapidly in recent years and is a highly popular and global phenomenon, only few research examined how the different cultural values and attitudes impact the way people adopt and use this new media platform. Employing qualitative approach, this study attempts to uncover the cross-cultural differences in motivations and behavioral patterns for using SNSs among the Korean and American users. The finding of this study shows the explicit differences in the motivations and strategies for using SNSs between Korean and American users, which is supported by the independent and interdependent self-construals theory proposed by Markus and Kitayama （1991）. The motivational themes and usage patterns emerged from Korean participants are more other- or relationship-focused, pursuing social/emotional support, while those of Americans are more ego- or self-focused, pertaining to entertainment or information seeking.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of gastrectomy on diabetes mellitus(DM) and hypertension(HTN) in non-obese gastric cancer patients. METHODS: A total of 100000 patients, diagnosed with either type 2 DM or HTN, were randomly selected from the 2004 Korean National Health Insurance System claims. Among them, 360 diabetes and 351 hypertensive patients with gastric cancer who had been regularly treated without chemotherapy from January 2005 to December 2010 were selected. They were divided into three groups according to their treatment methods: total gastrectomy(TG), subtotal gastrectomy(STG) and endoscopic resection(ER). RESULTS: The drug discontinuation rate of antidiabetic and anti-hypertensive agents after gastric cancer treatment was 9.7% and 11.1% respectively. DM appeared to be improved more frequently(22.8%) and earlier(mean ± SE 28.6 ± 1.8 mo) in TG group than in the two other groups [improved in 9.5% of ER group(37.4 ± 1.1 mo) and 6.4% of STG group(47.0 ± 0.8 mo)]. The proportion of patients treated with multiple drugs decreased more notably in TG group compared to others(P = 0.001 in DM, and P = 0.035 in HTN). In TG group, adjusted hazard ratio for theimprovement of DM was 2.87(95%CI: 1.15-7.17) in a multi-variate analysis and better control of DM was observed with survival analysis(P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: TG was found to decrease the need for anti-diabetic medications which can be reflective of improved glycemic control, to a greater extent than either ER or STG in non-obese diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND Liver abscess due to foreign body-induced gastrointestinal tract perforation is a rare event that could be misdiagnosed due to low *** than 100 cases have been reported to *** SUMMARY We report a case of a 53-year old female patient with pyogenic liver abscess secondary to ingestion of a toothpick with penetration through the lesser curvature of the *** patient presented with persistent epigastric *** computed tomography demonstrated the presence of a linear radiopaque object associated with abscess formation in the left liver *** changes in the lesser curvature of the stomach indicated gastric wall penetration by the *** the abscess was refractory to antibiotic treatment,laparoscopic liver resection was performed to remove the foreign body and adjacent liver *** surgery,symptoms fully resolved without any *** This rare case demonstrates the importance of considering foreign body penetration as a cause of pyogenic liver abscess,particularly in abscesses of unknown origin that are resistant to antibiotic *** suspicion,early diagnosis,and prompt removal of the foreign body could lead to improved outcomes in these patients.
