Substrates or encapsulants in soft and stretchable formats are key components for transient,bioresorbable electronic systems;however,elastomeric polymers with desired mechanical and biochemical properties are very limited compared to nontransient counterparts.Here,we introduce a bioresorbable elastomer,poly(glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone)(PGCL),that contains excellent material properties including high elongation-at-break(<1300%),resilience and toughness,and tunable dissolution behaviors.Exploitation of PGCLs as polymer matrices,in combination with conducing polymers,yields stretchable,conductive composites for degradable interconnects,sensors,and actuators,which can reliably function under external strains.Integration of device components with wireless modules demonstrates elastic,transient electronic suture system with on-demand drug delivery for rapid recovery of postsurgical wounds in soft,time-dynamic tissues.

Glioblastoma(GBM)is the most aggressive malignant brain tumor and has a high mortality rate.Photodynamic therapy(PDT)has emerged as a promising approach for the treatment of malignant brain tumors.However,the use of PDT for the treatment of GBM has been limited by its low blood-brain barrier(BBB)permeability and lack of cancer-targeting ability.Herein,brain endothelial cell-derived extracellular vesicles(bEVs)were used as a biocompatible nanoplatform to transport photosensitizers into brain tumors across the BBB.To enhance PDT efficacy,the photosensitizer chlorin e6(Ce6)was linked to mitochondria-targeting triphenylphosphonium(TPP)and entrapped into bEVs.TPPconjugated Ce6(TPP-Ce6)selectively accumulated in the mitochondria,which rendered brain tumor cells more susceptible to reactive oxygen species-induced apoptosis under light irradiation.Moreover,the encapsulation of TPP-Ce6 into b EVs markedly improved the aqueous stability and cellular internalization of TPP-Ce6,leading to significantly enhanced PDT efficacy in U87MG GBM cells.An in vivo biodistribution study using orthotopic GBM-xenografted mice showed that b EVs containing TPP-Ce6[b EV(TPP-Ce6)]substantially accumulated in brain tumors after BBB penetration via transferrin receptor-mediated transcytosis.As such,b EV(TPP-Ce6)-mediated PDT considerably inhibited the growth of GBM without causing adverse systemic toxicity,suggesting that mitochondria are an effective target for photodynamic GBM therapy.

Targeted and effective photodynamic therapy for cancer using functionalized nanomaterials

Photodynamic therapy(PDT) is an emerging, non-invasive therapeutic strategy that involves photosensitizer(PS) drugs and external light for the treatment of diseases. Despite the great progress in PS-mediated PDT, their clinical applications are still hampered by poor water solubility and tissue/cell specificity of conventional PS drugs. Therefore, great efforts have been made towards the development of nanomaterials that can tackle fundamental challenges in conventional PS drug–mediated PDT for cancer treatment. This review highlights recent advances in the development of nano-platforms, in which various functionalized organic and inorganic nanomaterials are integrated with PS drugs, for significantly enhanced efficacy and tumor-selectivity of PDT.

Mitochondria-targeting drug conjugates for cytotoxic, anti-oxidizing and sensing purposes:current strategies and future perspectives

mitochondrial-targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensor molecules. Among them, the most widely applied mitochondrial targeting moiety is triphenylphosphonium(TPP), which is a delocalized cationic lipid that readily accumulates and penetrates through the mitochondrial membrane due to the highly negative mitochondrial membrane potential. Other moieties, including short peptides,dequalinium, guanidine, rhodamine, and F16, are also known to be promising mitochondrial targeting agents. Direct conjugation of mitochondrial targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensors results in increased cytotoxicity, anti-oxidizing activity and sensing activity, respectively,compared with their non-targeting counterparts, especially in drug-resistant cells. Although many mitochondria-targeted anticancer drug conjugates have been investigated in vitro and in vivo, further clinical studies are still needed. On the other hand, several mitochondria-targeting antioxidants have been analyzed in clinical phases I, II and III trials, and one conjugate has been approved for treating eye disease in Russia. There are numerous ongoing studies of mitochondria-targeted sensors.

Associations of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol with metabolic syndrome and its components in Korean children and adolescents: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2008–2014

Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between single-gender Korean references for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in childhood. Methods A total of 5742 Korean children aged 10–18 years who participated in a national survey were included. The sub-jects were classified into three groups based on single-gender non-HDL-C levels as follows: <120 mg/dL (desirable), ≥120 and <150 mg/dL (borderline high), and ≥150 mg/dL (high). Results Males in the borderline high non-HDL-C group had odds ratios (ORs) of 2.86 (95% confidence interval, 2.30–3.56) for elevated triglycerides (TG), 1.73 (1.08–1.79) for reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 1.73 (1.08–2.78) for MetS compared with males in the desirable non-HDL-C group after adjusting for covariates. Males in the high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 1.65 (1.14–2.41) for elevated blood pressure (BP), 6.21 (4.27–9.05) for elevated TG, and 3.29 (1.49–7.26) for MetS compared with males in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Females in the borderline high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 3.03 (2.43–3.76) for elevated TG, 1.63 (1.13–2.35) for reduced HDL-C, and 4.53 (2.47–8.31) for MetS compared with females in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Females in the high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 1.43 (1.00–2.04) for elevated BP, 6.36 (4.45–9.08) for elevated TG, and 7.64 (3.65–15.96) for MetS compared with females in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Conclusion Our results suggest that, in a Korean population, a non-HDL-C level of 120 mg/dL for males and 150 mg/dL for females is the threshold between borderline high and high risk for MetS.

Rationally designed bioactive milk-derived protein scaffolds enhanced new bone formation

Recently,a number of studies reported that casein was composed of various multifunctional bioactive peptides such as casein phosphopeptide andβ-casochemotide-1 that bind calcium ions and induce macrophage chemotaxis,which is crucial for bone homeostasis and bone fracture repair by cytokines secreted in the process.We hypothesized that the effects of the multifunctional biopeptides in casein would contribute to improving bone regeneration.Thus,we designed a tissue engineering platform that consisted of casein and polyvinyl alcohol,which was a physical-crosslinked scaffold(milk-derived protein;MDP),via simple freeze-thaw cycles and performed surface modification using 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine(DOPA),a mussel adhesive protein,for immobilizing adhesive proteins and cytokines for recruiting cells in vivo(MDP-DOPA).Both the MDP and MDP-DOPA groups proved indirectly contribution of macrophages migration as RAW 264.7 cells were highly migrated toward materials by contained bioactive peptides.We implanted MDP and MDP-DOPA in a mouse calvarial defect orthotopic model and evaluated whether MDP-DOPA showed much faster mineral deposition and higher bone density than that of the no-treatment and MDP groups.The MDP-DOPA group showed the accumulation of host M2 macrophages and mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)around the scaffold,whereas MDP presented mostly M1 macrophages in the early stage.

Automatic detection of teeth and dental treatment patterns on dental panoramic radiographs using deep neural networks

Disaster victim identification issues are especially critical and urgent after a large-scale disaster.The aim of this study was to suggest an automatic detection of natural teeth and dental treatment patterns based on dental panoramic radiographs(DPRs)using deep learning to promote its applicability as human identifiers.A total of 1638 DPRs,of which the chronological age ranged from 20 to 49 years old,were collected from January 2000 to November 2020.This dataset consisted of natural teeth,prostheses,teeth with root canal treatment,and implants.The detection of natural teeth and dental treatment patterns including the identification of teeth number was done with a pre-trained object detection network which was a convolutional neural network modified by EfficientDet-D3.The objective metrics for the average precision were 99.1%for natural teeth,80.6%for prostheses,81.2%for treated root canals,and 96.8%for implants,respectively.The values for the average recall were 99.6%,84.3%,89.2%,and 98.1%,in the same order,respectively.This study showed outstanding performance of convolutional neural network using dental panoramic radiographs in automatically identifying teeth number and detecting natural teeth,prostheses,treated root canals,and implants.

BACKGROUND Omental infarction(OI)is a surgical abdominal disease that is not common in adults and is very rare in children.Similar to various acute abdominal pain diseases including appendicitis,diagnosis was previously achieved by diagnostic laparotomy but more recently,ultrasonography or computed tomography(CT)examination has been used.CASE SUMMARY A 6-year-old healthy boy with no specific medical history visited the emergency room with right lower abdominal pain.He underwent abdominal ultrasonography by a radiologist to rule out acute appendicitis.He was discharged with no significant sonographic finding and symptom relief.However,the symptoms persisted for 2 more days and an outpatient visit was made.An outpatient abdominal CT was used to make a diagnosis of OI.After laparoscopic operation,his symptoms resolved.CONCLUSION In children’s acute abdominal pain,imaging studies should be performed for appendicitis and OI.

Sodium-Coordinated Polymeric Phthalocyanines as Stable High-Capacity Organic Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs)have attracted considerable interest as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries owing to their similar electrochemical performance and superior long-term cycle stability.Organic materials are regarded as promising anode materials for constructing SIBs with high capacity and good retention.However,utilization of organic materials is rather limited by their low energy density and poor stability at high current densities.To overcome these limitations,we utilized a novel polymeric disodium phthalocyanines(pNaPc)as SIB anodes to provide stable coordination sites for Na ions as well as to enhance the stability at high current density.By varying the linker type during a one-pot cyclization and polymerization process,two pNaPc anodes with O-(O-pNaPc)and S-linkers(S-pNaPc)were prepared,and their structural and electrochemical properties were investigated.The O-pNaPc binds Na ions with a lower binding energy compared with S-pNaPc,which leads to more facile Na-ion coordination/dissociation when engaged as SIB anode.The use of O-pNaPc significantly improves the redox kinetics and cycle stability and allows the fabrication of a full cell against Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(2)F_(3)/C cathode,which demonstrates its practical application with high energy density(288 Wh kg^(-1))and high power density(149 W kg^(-1)).
