Determination of key soil characteristic parameters using angle of repose and direct shear stress test

Discrete element modelling(DEM)is a numerical method for examining the dynamic behavior of granular *** order to build an accurate simulation model and provide more comprehensive soil characteristic parameters for the design and optimization of various soil contact machinery,in this paper,the discrete element simulation method(EDEM)combined with experimental approach is used to investigate the soil contact characteristic parameters in East *** this study,Hertze-mindlin(no slip)was used as a particle contact model by taking particle contact parameters and soil JKR(Johnson-Kendall-Roberts)surface energy as determinants,and repose angle,internal friction angle,and cohesive force as evaluation *** method of Plackett-Burman,Stepest ascent,and Box-Behnken were used to gradually reduce the range of parameters needed for simulation until the most accurate value was *** results show that the restitution coefficient,static friction coefficient,and rolling friction coefficient between soil particles have significant effects on the DEM model,and their value of them are 0.596,0.725,and 0.16,*** on these parameters used for the repose angle test and direct shear stress test,the value of repose angle is 31.97°,the internal friction angle is 27.61°,and the cohesive force is 33.06 *** relative errors with the actual measured values are 9.54%,1.87%,and 2.31%,*** order to further test whether the simulation parameters of soil obtained by repose angle test and direct shear stress test are consistent with the real soil,comparison test between field test and discrete element simulation was *** results show that the error in height of ridge between the simulated soil and the actual soil is 4.06%,which is within the acceptable *** also indicates that the calibrated and optimized soil simulation model can accurately represent the real *** research provides theoretical basis and technical support for the study of soil

Breakthrough Technologies for the Biorefining of Organic Solid and Liquid Wastes

Organic solid and liquid wastes contain large amounts of energy, nutrients, and water, and should not be perceived as merely waste. Recycling, composting, and combustion of non-recyclables have been practiced for decades to capture the energy and values from municipal solid wastes. Treatment and disposal have been the primary management strategy for wastewater. As new technologies are emerging, alternative options for the utilization of both solid wastes and wastewater have become available. Considering the complexity of the chemical, physical, and biological properties of these wastes, multiple technologies may be required to maximize the energy and value recovery from the wastes. For this purpose, biorefin- ing tends to be an appropriate approach to completely utilize the energy and value available in wastes. Research has demonstrated that non-recyclable waste materials and bio-solids can be converted into usable heat, electricity, fuel, and chemicals through a variety of processes, and the liquid waste streams have the potential to support crop and algae growth and provide other energy recovery and food production options. In this paper, we propose new biorefining schemes aimed at organic solid and liquid wastes from municipal sources, food and biological processing plants, and animal production facilities. Four new breakthrough technologies-namely, vacuum-assisted thermophilic anaerobic digestion, extended aquaponics, oily wastes to biodiesel via glycerolysis, and microwave-assisted thermochemical conversion-can be incorporated into the biorefining schemes, thereby enabling the complete utilization of those wastes for the production of chemicals, fertilizer, energy （biogas, syngas, biodiesel, and bio-oil）, foods, and feeds, and resulting in clean water and a significant reduction in pollutant emissions.

Motivational Strategies to Improve Artisan’s Productivity in the Construction Industry in Ghana

Motivation is a strategy adopted by organisational managers to improve organisational performance. Most researchers have found different factors that affect the motivation on a different level. The aim of the survey was to examine the motivational strategies for improving productivity among artisans in the construction companies in the Eastern Region and the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional research design utilising the quantitative approach. A purposive random sampling technique was employed to choose 90 workers to participate in the study. A structured questionnaire was utilised to gather information from respondents. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) were used to analyse the data collected. Results from the survey showed that artisans see motivation as very significant in their workplace. The study found that empowerment, quality of life, and monetary incentive have significant relation with motivation and effective use of such strategies could assist construction industry practitioners to enhance craftsmen performance. The study contributes to a few pieces of literature existing in construction motivational strategies. The findings point to the fact that industrial players should pay more attention to the motivational strategies to assist artisans’ function effectively in their work environment.

This paper proposes a new reactive control technique for controlling single body heaving wave energy converter (WEC). A function-based continuous model predictive controller (MPC) is implemented to maximize the absorbed energy while respecting the physical limitations of the device. Laguerre orthonormal functions are deployed to approximate the input variable trajectory, which reduces the computational burden associated with MPC. The developed control strategy is evaluated using both monochromatic and polychromatic sea states. The function-based mode predictive controller showed decent reference signal tracking capabilities, optimizing the control effort to achieve maximum power transfer, while respecting the actuators mechanical and electrical limitations. Also the controller provides means to alleviate the problem of excessive real/reactive power flows.

Examining the Impact of Welfare Facilities on Building Construction Employee’s Performance in the Eastern Region of Ghana

Building Construction employees essentially required sufficient welfare facilities such as a place for washing, shower, change over, eat and drink, a place to store and hang clothing. Yet, these fundamental necessities are regularly disregarded. Decent welfare facilities can absolutely promote health and well-being and can aid to avert contracting diseases at building construction site. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of welfare facilities on building construction workers performance in the Eastern Region Ghana. The objectives were to identify welfare facilities provided by building construction firms, evaluate the satisfaction level of building construction firms’ employees with welfare facilities in Eastern Region, and determine the relationship between provision of welfare facilities and employee’s performance. The study employed convenient sample to investigate 80 building construction employees through questionnaires administration. Data generated from the survey was further analyzed using SPSS, weighted mean formula was used to determine the mean ranking, and descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean score, percentages, frequencies and chi square were used. The study reveals that the extent of welfare facilities at various construction sites was almost unavailability of sanitary and toilet facilities, unavailability of washing facilities, and unavailability of changing room, whiles drinking water and locker facilities were available but not sufficient. The study further finds that construction employees are dissatisfied with the condition of welfare facilities provided at their various work places.
