High Contribution of Sea Salt Aerosols on Atmospheric Particles Measured at an Urban Tropical Location in Reunion Island

PM10 was monitored during 2008-2011 period at LUT and BON, two urban tropical stations close to each other at Saint-Pierre city, in Reunion Island (south-western Indian Ocean). During the study period, notable PM10 concentrations are observed at BON close to the coasts. At LUT, a more inland site, the daily PM10 concentration range between 13 and 70 μg/m3. Importantly, the limit value for the protection of the human health is systematically exceeded at BON while it is never exceeded at LUT. Also, the quality objective (QO: 30 μg/m3, on annual average) and the limit value for the human health protection (LV: 40 μg/m3, on annual average) are exceeded at BON each year during 2008-2011, while at LUT no regulatory values are exceeded. Nitrogen dioxide, an atmospheric tracer of anthropogenic activities was also monitored at LUT and BON. The mean diurnal NO2 variation is of the same level and order of magnitude and exhibits a similar pattern at both stations suggesting that distinct sources influence the PM10 at LUT and at BON. Chemical analysis was performed on daily filters sampled in September-November 2011 at the two stations to determine the sea salt contribution on PM10 across Saint-Pierre city. It showed that the sea salt contribution to the PM10 is 55% at BON in September 2011. The sea salt particles are therefore the main cause for the exceedances of the regulatory values of PM10 recorded at BON. The results importantly suggest that the notable PM10 concentrations measured at this urban marine site might have some but minor impact on human health.

Brain Stroke as a Post-Operative Lethal Complication of a Bilateral Chronic Subdural Hematoma: A Case Report

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition that is frequently encountered in neurosurgery practice. Its etiologies are dominated by traumatic head injury, and clinical presentations are various. The prognosis is generally good, but complications can be seen. Some of these complications can lead to the death of the patient. We report the rare case of a 70-year-old man admitted to the emergency room for the management of bilateral CSDH revealed by severe headache, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. He underwent a successful evacuation of both hematomas but had a stroke in both posterior cerebral artery territories, which was lethal 72 hours after surgery. We present and try to find an explanation for this exceptional post-operative complication of CSDH.

Arachnoiditis Ossificans Mimicking Spinal Intradural Extramedullary Tumor: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Arachnoiditis ossificans is an intradural extramedullary lesion resulting from an unusual chronic meningeal inflammatory process and it is thought to be the sequela of end-stage adhesive arachnoiditis secondary to surgery, trauma, arachnoid hemorrhage, meningeal irritation, myelography (particularly oil-based contrast agents), and spinal anesthesia. The spinal arachnoiditis ossificans may be silent or cause a variety of symptoms depending on its location and uncommonly happen to cause spinal cord compression. Very little attention has been paid to the management and outcome of this rare condition in the neurosurgical reem. We report the case of a 45 years old man admitted with L1 - L2 arachnoiditis ossificans revealed by polyradiculopathy on incomplete cauda equina syndrome mimicking spinal canal tumors. The patient underwent surgery and we performed the laminectomy of L1 - L2, total resection of the lesion, followed by a complete remission of the hemiparesis after three months of kinesitherapy nursing.

Brain Metastasis of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

The metastases of uterine leiomyosarcoma to the brain are exceptional and such cases are seldomly reported in the literature. The diagnosis is based on CT and brains MRI findings, in association with a gynecological history of cancer. Their management still stays without guidelines, and the surgical total resection is known to be the only way to influence positively the prognosis and save patient lives. We report a rare case of a 46 years old woman who underwent a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 5 years earlier and presented with the right hemiparesis and whose CT scan and MRI of the brain showed cerebral lesions related to brain location of uterine leiomyosarcoma. The patient underwent surgery for gross total tumor resection, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, and was doing well after surgery. Three months later she was admitted for recurrences and died after two months of palliative care.

The objective of this work is the study of recoverability of materials. It consists in studying the effectiveness of the addition of natural pozzolan on the thermal properties of the mortar. To do this, measuring instruments were installed to quantify the overall indoor environment and in particular the thermal environment. Given that the thermal environment is characterized by the physical quantities： the temperature of air, wall temperature and the air humidity. This allows gauging the level of the energy consumption and thermal behavior of the envelope of structure in order to verify the conformity of the housing to the requirements of thermal comfort. For this, we measured the thermal conductivity of mortars containing different contents of pozzolan （10%, 20%, 30%）. So, the results showed the beneficial effect ofpozzolan as thermal insulator by comparing with other insulation materials.

The High Molecular Weight HMW-GS and Low-Molecular-Weight LMW-GS Glutenin Subunits are major determinants of wheat dough processing qualities. Tilling populations was generated by EMS mutagenesis from Chaml durum variety. Protein quality was investigated by SDS sedimentation, protein content, gluten content and thousand kernel weights. 21 mutants were selected from 1,500 lines of tilling population depending on the variations of their electrophoresis profiles. The analysis of Glu-B 1 HMW-GS has showed two types of profiles： lines deficient on Bx7 and lines with expression of new protein between （Bx7-ByS） allelic pair combination. The majority of these mutant lines have showed quality compounds associated with bad technological characteristics like the parent Cham l with the exception of two mutant lines expressing new protein that have significantly stronger gluten properties an one mutant deficient on Bx7 HMW-GS that developed high value of SDS. For Glu-B3 LMW-GS coding for LMW glutenin type 1 and 2, new mutant line showing expression of new protein pattern. The mutant showing over-expression of bands on gel SDS-PAGE for LMW typel like Chaml, have produced the highest protein and gluten content, while the new mutant showing new profile have showed high value of Gluten and SDS.

The Role of Aromatic Schiff Bases in the Dyes Techniques

Anil compounds are Schiff bases derived from aniline moiety containing phenyl or substituted phenyl group, which sometimes called Azo dyes. These Schiff bases can be directly prepared from aromatic amine with aromatic carbonyl groups, which are stable and can be manipulated under different and suitable conditions. The phenomena of coordination of Schiff bases with metal ions give the Schiff bases the good advantages to be introduced in the dyes synthesis. The classification of dyes is based on the chemical structure or on the basis of the chromophoric system. The metal complex dyes are combinations of dyestuff and metal ions, in which the coordination complex can be applied or used to be improvement factors in dye techniques. The investigation and the characterization of the resulted dyes were performed by using different physical techniques. The produced dyes were applied to different fibres, such as sheep wool and goat hair with two Schiff bases synthesised from salicylaldehyde either with 2-aminophenol or 2-aminobenzyl alcohol. Also the investigation includes the effect of mordant type on the dyeing process.

Massive Rhinorrhea as a Complication of COVID-19 Nasopharyngeal Swab

The nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19 testing is generally considered safe;however, it is primarily performed by staff that may not completely understand the anatomy of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. We report the treatment of a 48-year-old man who developed unilateral left rhinorrhea after a nasopharyngeal swab sample. It is aimed to draw attention to this complication that can be prevented with the appropriate technique during nasopharyngeal swab sampling.
