Metabolic aspects of adult patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is a major cause of chronic liver disease and it encompasses a spectrum from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, or cirrhosis. The mechanisms involved in the occurrence of NAFLD and its progression are probably due to a metabolic profile expressed within the context of a genetic predisposition and is associated with a higher energy intake. The metabolic syndrome(MS) is a cluster of metabolic alterations associated with an increased risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. NAFLD patients have more than one feature of the MS, and now they are considered the hepatic components of the MS. Several scientific advances in understanding the association between NAFLD and MS have identified insulin resistance(IR) as the key aspect in the pathophysiology of both diseases. In the multi parallel hits theory of NAFLD pathogenesis, IR was described to be central in the predisposition of hepatocytes to be susceptible to other multiple pathogenetic factors. The recent knowledge gained from these advances can be applied clinically in the prevention and management of NAFLD and its associated metabolic changes. The present review analyses the current literature and highlights the new evidence on the metabolic aspects in the adult patients with NAFLD.

Oxygen Plasma/Bismuth Modified Inkjet Printed Graphene Electrode for the Sensitive Simultaneous detection of Lead and Cadmium

In this work, a simple procedure for the preparation of an inkjet printed disposable graphene electrode is reported. Commercial graphene ink was printed on a kapton substrate and the resulting electrode was 30 min treated by oxygen plasma, then modified by a bismuth salt. The as prepared electrode was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), laser scanning microscopy (LSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The sensing properties of the characterized electrodes were then investigated using cyclic voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Afterwards, these electrodes were exploited in a comparative way for the electroanalysis of Cadmium(II) and Lead(II) ions. An increase in the electrode sensitivity due to its modification and to the presence of bismuth was observed. Some preliminary experiments based on stripping square wave voltammetry highlighted the interest of using the proposed disposable inkjet printed electrodes for the electrochemical detection of heavy metals in tap water.

We describe the development of quinolylnitrones(QNs)as multifunctional ligands inhibiting cholinesterases(ChEs:acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase—h BChE)and monoamine oxidases(hMAO-A/B)for the therapy of neurodegenerative *** identified QN 19,a simple,low molecular weight nitrone,that is readily synthesized from commercially available *** 19 has no typical pharmacophoric element to suggest ChE or MAO inhibition,yet unexpectedly showed potent inhibition of h BChE(ic50=1.06±0.31 nmol/L)and h MAO-B(ic_(50)=4.46±0.18μmol/L).The crystal structures of 19 with hBChE and hMAO-B provided the structural basis for potent binding,which was further studied by enzyme *** 19 acted as a free radical scavenger and biometal chelator,crossed the blood—brain barrier,was not cytotoxic,and showed neuroprotective properties in a 6-hydroxydopamine cell model of Parkinson's *** addition,in vivo studies showed the anti-amnesic effect of 19 in the scopolamine-induced mouse model of AD without adverse effects on motoric function and ***,chronic treatment of double transgenic APPswe-PS1δE9 mice with 19 reduced amyloid plaque load in the hippocampus and cortex of female mice,underscoring the disease-modifying effect of QN 19.

Zinc phosphate-based nanoparticles as a novel antibacterial agent: in vivo study on rats after dietary exposure

Background: development of new nanomaterials that inhibit or kil bacteria is an important and timely research topic. For example, financial losses due to infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, are a major concern in livestock productions around the world. Antimicrobial nanoparticles(NPs) represent a promising alternative to antibiotics and may lower antibiotic use and consequently spread of antibiotic resistance traits among bacteria, including ***: Four formulations of zinc nanoparticles(Zn A, Zn B, Zn C, and Zn D) based on phosphates with spherical(Zn A, Zn B)or irregular(Zn C, Zn D) morphology were prepared. The highest in vitro inhibitory effect of our NPs was observed against Staphylococcus aureus(inhibitory concentration values, ic50, ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 mmol/L), fol owed by Escherichia coli(ic500.8–1.5 mmol/L). In contrast, methicil in resistant S. aureus(ic501.2–4.7 mmol/L) was least affected and this was similar to inhibitory patterns of commercial Zn O-based NPs and Zn O. After the successful in vitro testing, the in vivo study with rats based on dietary supplementation with zinc NPs was conducted. Four groups of rats were treated by 2,000 mg Zn/kg diet of Zn A, Zn B, Zn C, and Zn D, for comparison two groups were supplemented by 2,000 mg Zn/kg diet of Zn O-N and Zn O, and one group(control) was fed only by basal diet. The significantly higher(P ic and coliform bacterial population in rat feces significantly decreased(P icles reduced coliforms significantly more(P demonstrate that phosphate-based zinc nanoparticles have the potential to act as antibiotic agents.
