Impact of natural disturbance, forest management and vegetation cover on topsoil biochemical characteristics of Tatra Mts.(Slovakia)

Perturbations caused by windstorms usually lead to the harvesting and clearcutting of fallen trees and wood debris,especially in the areas of managed forest *** shifts in soils due to management practices play a crucial role in the restoration and maintaining of key ecosystem *** paper focuses on topsoil chemical properties in relation to vegetation type(trees,shrubs and herbs)evolving at windstorm damaged(in 2004)areas with former Norway spruce(Picea abies)forests in the Tatra ***(Slovakia).We assessed the content of topsoil organic matter fractions(extractives,holocellulose(HC)and lignin(Lig)),carbon in microbial biomass(Cmic),soil organic matter(SOM)and the content of elements N,C,H and *** study plots represent different types of post-windthrow disturbance history/regime:wooden debris extraction(EXT),wooden debris not extracted(NEX),wooden debris extraction followed by wildfire(FIR),affected by the windstorm in 2014 with the subsequent wooden debris extraction(REX)and unaffected(REF).Our results revealed significant differences among sites in the content of dichloromethane extractives(EXT *** and FIR),acetone extractives(NEX ***,FIR and REF),ethanol extractives(FIR ***,NEX and REF),water extractives(FIR ***,NEX)and Cmic(EXT ***,FIR and REF).The topsoil of Vaccinium myrtillus and Picea abies showed a higher ratio of C/N,N/Lig,and Lig/HC compared to Rubus idaeus,Avenella flexuosa,Calamagrostis villosa,and Larix *** content of N,C,H and S varied between topsoil with shrubs(Vaccinium myrtillus,Rubus idaeus)and grasses(Avenella flexuosa,Calamagrostis villosa).A positive correlation between soil organic matter(SOM)and polar extractives(r=0.81)and a negative correlation between SOM and HC(r=-0.83)was *** carbon content in microbial biomass(Cmic)is positively correlated with acid soluble lignin(ASL)(r=0.85).We also identified a strong correlation between Klason lignin(KL)and the Lig/HC ratio(r=0.97).

In railway network,friction is an important factor to consider in terms of the service behaviors of wheel-rail *** objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a solid friction modifier(FM)in a railway *** was achieved by studying the friction,wear,and rolling contact fatigue(RCF)damage on the wheel-rail materials at different slip *** results showed that when a solid FM was applied,the friction coefficient *** the solid FM was separated from the wheel-rail interface,the friction coefficient gradually increased to its original *** the application of the solid FM,the wear rates of the wheel-rail *** addition,the thickness and hardness of the plastic deformation layers of the wheel-rail materials were *** worn surfaces of the wheel-rail were dominated by pits and RCF *** the FM,RCF cracks ranged from 84 to 120μm,and subsurface cracks were ***,with the FM,RCF cracks ranged from 17 to 97μm and no subsurface cracks were *** findings indicate possible methods of improving the performance of railway rolling stock by managing friction,and reducing wear and permanent RCF damage affecting both the wheels and rails.

Provenance, depositional process, and tectonic setting of gold placer from the Bétaré-Oya Gold District(East-Cameroon, Central Africa)along the Precambrian Sanaga fault

The Bétaré-Oya Gold District is one of the three gold districts in East Cameroon with varied types of mining. The study site is an open-cast mine located in an alluvial plain. The strata succession globally consists of two positive sequences represented by three facies associations and seven lithofacies: massive clast-supported(Gcm), massive trough-cross bedded(Gtm), and massive matrix-supported(Gmm)conglomerates; massive sands(Sm); and massive(Fm), heterolothic(Fhl), and convolute and heterolithic(Fhlc) clays. The facies analysis indicates deposition after a recent tectonic event creating a depression,followed by a rapid deposition of varied facies and energies of sedimentation with fluvial and gravity inputs. The deposits come from proximal to distal sources but more proximal. The identified heavy mineral or accompanying minerals reveal a plutonic source(tourmaline sometimes folded), a volcanic source(olivine or clino-pyroxene with cracks), and a metamorphic source(sillimanite, andalusite, and staurolite). In the pan concentrates of placer with high silver(Ag) concentration(100 ppm) are also associated with relative abundance of lead(Pb)(17.8 ppm), zinc(Zn)(27 ppm), and low levels of copper(Cu)(3.1 ppm). The concentration and distribution of some element ratios, such as thorium/scandium(Th/Sc), chromium/thorium(Cr/Th), and europium anomaly(Eu/Eu*), rare earth elements(REEs) and aluminum oxide/titanium dioxide(Al2O3/TiO2) vs. silicon dioxide(SiO2) plots for the studied sediment indicate heterogeneous sources of rocks with dominance of felsic sources. The discriminant diagram reveals a recycled or sedimentary provenance of the deposited sediments. The tectonic setting plot indicates a collision tectonic setting which is consistent with the Precambrian history of the study area which belongs to the Pan-African North-Equatorial fold Belt. Application of pre-emergence herbicides in poplar nursery production

In addition to pests and diseases, weeds are a major problem in poplar nursery production. The possibilities of herbicide application in juvenile poplar growth were researched, taking into account that weeds are one of the main limiting factors. The following pre-emergence herbicides were tested： acetochlor, S-metolachlor, metribuzin,oxifluorfen, and dimethenamid during two vegetation seasons at two locations, which differed by the soil physicochemical characteristics. The study results show that the number of weeds on sample plots was significantly reduced by the tested herbicides when compared to control plots. The highest reduction in the number of weeds was achieved using the herbicides acetochlor and metribuzin. However, metribuzin showed a phytotoxic effect on sandy soil. Metribuzin application is recommended only on the soils with higher contents of organic matter, where the phytotoxic effect was absent. Acetochlor, S-metolachlor, oxifluorfen, and dimethenamid were not phytotoxic to poplars and can be used for weed suppression in the production of poplar plants.

Measurement of Mathematical Constant π and Physical Quantity Pi

Instead of calculating the number π in this article special attention is paid to the method of measuring it. It has been found that there is a direct and indirect measurement of that number. To perform such a measurement, a selection was made of some mathematical and physical quantities which within themselves contain a number π. One such quantity is a straight angle Pi, which may be expressed as Pi = π rad. By measuring the angle, using the direct method, we determine the number π as π = arccos(-1). To implement an indirect measurement of the number π, a system consisting of a container with liquid and equating it with the measuring pot has been conceived. The accuracy of measurement by this method depends on the precision performance of these elements of the system.

Viewpoints of the target population regarding barriers and facilitators of colorectal cancer screening in the Czech Republic

BACKGROUND Public awareness of colorectal cancer(CRC) and uptake of CRC screening remain challenges. The viewpoints of the target population(asymptomatic individuals older than 50) regarding CRC screening information sources and the reasons for and against participation in CRC screening are not well known in the Czech Republic. This study aimed to acquire independent opinions from the target population independently on the health *** To investigate the viewpoints of the target population regarding the source of information for and barriers and facilitators of CRC *** A survey among relatives(aged 50 and older) of university students was conducted. Participants answered a questionnaire about sources of awareness regarding CRC screening, reasons for and against participation, and suggestions for improvements in CRC screening. The effect of certain variables on participation in CRC screening was *** Of 498 participants, 478(96%) respondents had some information about CRC screening and 375(75.3%) had participated in a CRC screening test. General practitioners(GPs)(n = 319, 64.1%) and traditional media(n = 166, 33.3%) were the most common information sources regarding CRC screening. A lack of interest or time and a fear of colonoscopy or positive results were reported as reasons for non-participation. Individuals aged > 60 years [adjusted odds ratio(aOR) = 2.30, 95% confidence interval(CI)(1.42-3.71), P = 0.001], females(aOR =1.95, 95%CI(1.26-3.01) P = 0.003), and relatives of CRC patients(aOR = 4.17,95%CI(1.82-9.58) P = 0.001) were more likely to participate in *** regarding screening provided by physicians-GPs:(aOR = 8.11,95%CI(4.90-13.41), P < 0.001) and other specialists(aOR = 4.19, 95%CI(1.87-9.38),P = 0.001) increased participation in screening. Collusion between Aggregated Industries in General Equilibrium

We analyze an infinite horizon difference game between four aggregated industries-production of producer goods, production of consumption goods, federation of labor unions, and commercial banking sector. Consumers do not behave strategically. They make their decisions on the basis of maximization of average discounted utility. Therefore, we do not include them in the set of players in the game. The payoffof each production industry and the commercial banking sector is equal to the average discounted sum of real dividends of its owners. The payoff of the federation of labor unions is equal to the average discounted sum of real wages and real unemployment benefits. A strict strong perfect general equilibrium is the applied solution concept for the game. It requires that there does not exist a coalition of players that can weakly Pareto improve the vector of continuation payoffs of its members in some subgame by a coordinated deviation. It is a refinement of Rubinstein＇s concept of a strong perfect equilibrium. We formulate and prove the sufficient condition for its existence. It is based on the assumption that no one of the aggregated industries can have a positive output without using some minimal amount of output of each other aggregated industry as an input. By definition, in each subgame, the equilibrium payoff vector in a strict strong perfect general equilibrium is strictly Pareto efficient. Thus, if each consumer either has only income from wage and unemployment benefit or receives dividend from only one aggregated industry, and his nominal income in each period along the equilibrium path exceeds social minimum, it is not possible to weakly Pareto improve the vector of consumers＇ average discounted real incomes. This holds not only for the whole game but also for each subgame starting in the first phase of some period.
