Optical tracking of picosecond coherent phonon pulse focusing inside a sub-micron object

By means of an ultrafast optical technique,we track focused gigahertz coherent phonon pulses in objects down to sub-micron in *** light pulses illuminating the surface of a single metal-coated silica fibre generate longitudinal-phonon wave *** of visible probe light pulses from the fibre surface allows the vibrational modes of the fibre to be detected,and Brillouin optical scattering of partially transmitted light pulses allows the acoustic wavefronts inside the transparent fibre to be continuously *** thereby probe acoustic focusing in the time domain resulting from generation at the curved fibre *** analytical model,supported by three-dimensional simulations,suggests that we have followed the focusing of the acoustic beam down to a~150-nm diameter waist inside the *** work significantly narrows the lateral resolution for focusing of picosecond acoustic pulses,normally limited by the diffraction limit of focused optical pulses to~1μm,and thereby opens up a new range of possibilities including nanoscale acoustic microscopy and nanoscale computed tomography.

Characteristics of allergic colitis in breast-fed infants in the absence of cow's milk allergy

AIM: To investigate the characteristics of mucosal le-sions and their relation to laboratory data and long-term follow up in breast-fed infants with allergic colitis. METHODS: In this study 31 breast-fed infants were prospectively evaluated (mean age, 17.4 wk) whose rectal bleeding had not ceased after a maternal elimi-nation diet for cow's milk. Thirty-four age-matched and breast-fed infants (mean age, 16.9 wk) with no rectal bleeding were enrolled for laboratory testing as con-trols. Laboratory findings, colonoscopic and histological characteristics were prospectively evaluated in infants with rectal bleeding. Long-term follow-up with differ-ent nutritional regimes (L-amino-acid based formula or breastfeeding) was also included. RESULTS: Iron deficiency, peripheral eosinophilia andthrombocytosis were significantly higher in patients with allergic colitis in comparison to controls (8.4±3.2 μmol/L vs 13.7±4.7 μmol/L, P<0.001; 0.67±0.49 G/L vs 0.33±0.17 G/L, P<0.001; 474±123 G/L vs 376±89 G/L, P<0.001, respectively). At colonosco-py, lymphonodular hyperplasia or aphthous ulceration were present in 83% of patients. Twenty-two patients were given L-amino acid-based formula and 8 contin-ued the previous feeding. Time to cessation of rectal bleeding was shorter in the special formula feeding group (mean, 1.4 wk; range, 0.5-3 wk) when com-pared with the breast-feeding group (mean, 5.3 wk; range, 2-9 wk). Nevertheless, none of the patients ex-hibited rectal bleeding at the 3-mo visit irrespective of the type of feeding. Peripheral eosinophilia and cessa-tion of rectal bleeding after administration of elemental formula correlated with a higher density of mucosal eosinophils. CONCLUSION: Infant hematochezia, after cow's milk allergy exclusion, is generally a benign and probably self-limiting disorder despite marked mucosal abnor-mality. Formula feeding results in shorter time to cessa-tion of rectal bleeding; however, breast-feeding should not be discouraged in long-lasting

The spectrum of serological markers associated with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is rapidly *** to frequently delayed or missed diagnoses,the application of non-invasive diagnostic tests for IBD,as well as differentiation between ulcerative colitis(UC)and Crohn’s disease(CD),would be useful in the pediatric *** addition,the combination of pancreatic autoantibodies and antibodies against Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies/perinuclear cytoplasmic antibody(pANCA)improved the sensitivity of serological markers in pediatric patients with CD and *** studies suggested that age-associated differences in the patterns of antibodies may be present,particularly in the youngest *** CD,most patients develop stricturing or perforating complications,and a significant numberof patients undergo surgery during the disease *** on recent knowledge,serum antibodies are qualitatively and quantitatively associated with complicated CD behavior and CD-related *** UC is characterized by extensive colitis and a high rate of *** patients with UC,high levels of antiCBir1 and pANCA are associated with the development of pouchitis after ileal pouch-anal ***,serologic markers for IBD can be applied to stratify IBD patients into more homogeneous subgroups with respect to disease *** conclusion,identification of patients at an increased risk of rapid disease progression is of great interest,as the application of early and more aggressive pharmaceutical intervention could have the potential to alter the natural history of IBD,and reduce complications and hospitalizations.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and stability of different antiphospholipid antibodies(APLAs) and their association with disease phenotype and progression in inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD) ***: About 458 consecutive patients [Crohn's disease(CD): 271 and ulcerative colitis(UC): 187] were enrolled into a follow-up cohort study in a tertiary IBD referral center in Hungary. Detailed clinical phenotypes were determined at enrollment by reviewing the patients' medical charts. Disease activity, medical treatment and data about evolvement of complications or surgical interventions were determined prospectively during the follow-up. Disease course(development f complicated disease phenotype and need for surgery),occurrence of thrombotic events, actual state of diseaseactivity according to clinical, laboratory and endoscopic scores and accurate treatment regime were recorded during the follow-up,(median, 57.4 and 61.6 mo for CD and UC). Sera of IBD patients and 103 healthy controls(HC) were tested on individual anti-β2-Glycoprotein-I(anti-β2-GPI IgA/M/G), anti-cardiolipin(ACA IgA/M/G)and anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin(anti-PS/PT IgA/M/G) antibodies and also anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies(ASCA IgA/G) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). In a subgroup of CD(n = 198) and UC patients(n = 103), obtaining consecutive samples over various arbitrary timepoints during the disease course, we evaluated the intraindividual stability of the APLA status. Additionally,we provide an overview of studies, performed so far, in which significance of APLAs in IBD were ***: Patients with CD had significantly higher prevalence of both ACA(23.4%) and anti-PS/PT(20.4%) antibodies than UC(4.8%, p < 0.0001 and10.2%, p = 0.004) and HC(2.9%, p < 0.0001 and15.5%, p = NS). AIM:To analyze the difference in disease course and need for surgery in patients with Crohn’s disease(CD).METHODS:Data of 506 patients with incident CD were analyzed(age at diagnosis:31.5±13.8 years).Both hospital and outpatient records were collected prospectively with a complete clinical follow-up and comprehensively reviewed in the population-based Veszprem province database,which includes incident CD patients diagnosed between January 1,1977 and December 31,***-up data were collected until December 31,*** patients included had at least 1year of follow-up *** with indeterminate colitis at diagnosis were excluded from the ***:Overall,73 patients(14.4%)required resective surgery within 1 year of *** exposure and need for biological therapy were lower in patients with early limited surgery(P<0.001 and P=0.09).In addition,surgery rates during follow-up in patients with and without early surgery differed significantly after matching on propensity scores(P<0.001,HR=0.23).The need for reoperation was also lower in patients with early limited resective surgery(P=0.038,HR=0.42)in a Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox regression(P=0.04)***,this advantage was not observed after matching on propensity scores(PLogrank=0.656,PBreslow=0.498).CONCLUSION:Long-term surgery rates and overall exposure to steroids and biological agents were lower in patients with early limited resective surgery,but reoperation rates did not differ.

Increased duodenal expression of mi R-146a and-155 in pediatric Crohn's disease

AIM: To evaluate the role of micro RNA(mi R)-146 a,-155 and-122 in the duodenal mucosa of pediatric patients with Crohn's disease(CD) and the effect of transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β) on these mi Rs in duodenal epithelial and fibroblast ***: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsies derived from the macroscopically inflamed(CD inflamed: n = 10) and intact(CD intact: n = 10) duodenal mucosa of pediatric CD patients and control children(C: n = 10) were examined. Expression of mi R-146 a,-155 and-122 was determined by realtime polymerase-chain reaction(PCR). The expression of the above mi Rs was investigated in recombinant human TGF-β(1 nmol/L, 24 h) or vehicle treated small intestinal epithelial cells(CCL-241) and primary duodenal fibroblast cells derived from healthy children as ***: Expression of mi R-146 a was significantly higher in the inflamed duodenal mucosa compared to the intact duodenal mucosa of children with CD(CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs CD intact: 0.62 ± 0.26, p ≤ 0.01) and to the control group(CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs C: 1.00 ± 0.33, p ≤ 0.05). The expression of mi R-155 was significantly increased in the inflamed region of the duodenum compared to the control group(CD inflamed: 4.87 ± 1.02 vs Control: 1.00 ± 0.40, p ≤ 0.001). The expression of mi R-122 was unchanged in the inflamed or intact mucosa of CD patients compared to controls. TGF-β treatment significantly decreased the expression of mi R-155 in small intestinal epithelial cells(TGF-β: 0.7 ± 0.083 vs Control: 1 ± 0.09, p ≤ 0.05) and also the expression of mi R-146a(TGF-β: 0.67 ± 0.04 vs Control: 1 ± 0.15, p ≤ 0.01) and mi R-155(TGF-β: 0.72 ± 0.09 vs Control: 1 ± 0.06, p ≤ 0.05) in primary duodenal fibroblasts compared to corresponding vehicle treated controls. Can Industrial By-products Be Used as Tools in Sustainable Agriculture？

The goal of our study is to present results about the effects of selected industrial wastes—-sewage sludge, lime sludge, compost—-on the physiological parameters of plants. Maize seedlings (Zea mays L cvs. Norma SC) were used in soil plant (rhizobox) and nutrient solution plant system. The filtrates of the examined materials were used in the nutrient solution and the raw materials in the soil. Dry matter accumulation of shoots and roots, relative chlorophyll contents and the contents of some elements were measured in the plants grown on the nutrient solution. The examined materials contain some useful elements for plants e. g. Cu, Fe, K, and Mg and plenty of toxic metals e. g. Al, Cr. Root growth in the rhizoboxes was monitored, as well as that of roots in the experiment using soil. This type of growth was more intensive with the use of lime sludge than with of sewage sludge. On the other hand, the results were better at the sewage sludge than the lime sludge on the nutrient solution.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether contraceptive vaginal ring use results in si milar estimated genital symptoms, signs, examination, and laboratory findings co mpared with oral contraceptive use. METHODS: Women were randomly assigned to eit her contraceptive vaginal ring or a 20 μg ethinyl estradiol oral contraceptive pill use for 3 consecutive 28-day cycles, directly followed by 3 cycles of the study drug not initially assigned. Subjects scored genital symptoms on a daily d iary using a 0-4 scale and underwent a baseline, cycle 2, cycle 4, and exit pel vic examination including vaginal discharge evaluation, vaginal Gram stain and w hite cell count, and culture for yeast and Lactobacillus, including colony count and hydrogen peroxide production. RESULTS: Of the 40 subjects assigned to each arm, 33 (82.5%) subjects in the ring-first arm and 31 (77.5%) subjects in the pill-first arm completed all study visits (P = .58). Most subjects reported fe w genital symptoms with either method, but 63%of subjects reported vaginal wetn ess during ring use compared with 43%during pill use. During ring use larger nu mbers of Lactobacillus colonies present were positive for hydrogen peroxide prod uction (fold difference 2.67, 95%confidence interval 1.49, 4.78, P < .001). All other laboratory data, including yeast colony counts, Nugent Gram stain score, vaginal white blood cell count, vaginal pH, and discharge weight, were not signi ficantly different by method. CONCLUSION: Some women may notice an increase in v aginal wetness during contraceptive ring use yet the method is well tolerated an d appears to improve the vaginal flora.
