We investigated factors contributing to Internet addiction in 105 Japanese medical students. The subjects were administered by a self-reporting questionnaire designed to evaluate demographic factors, Internet addiction, loneliness, health-related lifestyle factors, depressive state, patterns of behavior, and mobile phone dependence. Results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that loneliness and mobile phone dependence were positively related to degree of addiction. Our findings suggest that Internet addiction is associated with loneliness and mobile phone dependence in Japanese students.

Cultural Sensitivity of Japanese Nurses: Exploring Clinical Application of the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale

Unlike Western countries, Asian countries have a brief history of caring for patients with various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Healthcare professionals face difficulty in providing care to foreign patients. Presumably, those with higher cultural sensitivity possess higher cultural competency, and cultural indicators are associated with personal factors, such as interest in or learning experience of foreign languages. We examined correlations between Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) and Cultural Competence in Nursing Scale (CCNS) scores in Japanese nurses and discussed implications of our findings in increasing cultural sensitivity in countries with limited exposure to foreign culture. A questionnaire survey on ISS, CCNS, and personal factors was conducted among 156 nurses. Correlations among the two scales and personal factors were analyzed. Total ISS scores were comparable with previously reported scores. ISS and CCNS scores were moderately correlated. ISS subscale scores were moderately correlated with the learning experience of foreign languages. Nurses most commonly learned English;most foreign patients were Chinese. Experiences of providing care to foreign patients were not related to cultural sensitivity. The lowest ISS score was obtained in “interaction confidence” subscale. Languages used by foreign patients did not match languages that nurses had interest in or had learned;this may contribute to their low confidence in interacting with foreigners. Nurses in a country with limited exposure to different cultures need educational intervention for providing care to foreigners regardless of their cultural experiences. ISS may be useful to identify nurses who need further education to foster confidence while interacting with foreigners.

Effects of Influential Parameters on Long-Term Channel Evolution Following Low-Head Dam Construction and Removal

The long-term existence of dam structures significantly modified the river channel. In accordance with a drastic increase of low-head dams under consideration for removal in recent years, it is important to predict the effects of low-head dam removal from the modified river channel by the low-head dam construction. This study intends to investigate the long-term channel evolution process following low-head construction and removal and to find out the influential parameters (sediment diameter, river bed slope, dam height) for those channel evolution by two-dimensional numerical simulation model. Following the low-head dam construction, sediment deposition rates in upstream of the low-head dam are varied with the influential parameters. The sediment deposition rates and sandbar formation with riparian vegetation settlement on sandbars have significantly affected for channel evolution following low-head dam removal. Especially the knickpoint formation and the types of vegetation (grass type and tree type) on the sandbars are critical factors for channel evolution following low-head dam removal. Through the numerical simulation results of low-head dam construction (50 years) and low-head dam removal (50 years), it is identified that the modified river channel by low-head dam may not be easily restored to pre-dam conditions following its removal especially in river geomorphology and riparian vegetation. Consequently, this study found that the reversibility following low-head dam construction and removal depends on the sediment deposition rates in upstream of the low-head dam.

We investigated factors contributing to mobile phone dependence. To 139 medical students, we administered a self-reporting questionnaire designed to evaluate mobile phone dependence, health-related lifestyle, patterns of behavior, and depressive state. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that scores for poor health-related lifestyle, Type A behavior pattern, and presence of depression are independently associated with degree of mobile phone dependency. These findings suggest that persons with an unhealthy lifestyle, Type A behavior traits, or depression might benefit from mobile phone use guidance.

我们用声表面波(SAW)器件研制成正交相移键控系统。一种有两个或三个叉指换能器(IDT)的SAW延迟器件可以作为通讯系统的调制和解调的键控元件。在发射系统中,应用有不同超声相位延迟的四根延迟线产生对应于一个输入四进制脉冲串的四相相移键控射频(RF)信号。在解调部分,为了同步,配置了一个附加的IDT。在这种情况下,当载频为50MHz时,数字传输速度是0.1Mbit/s。

We conducted the novel synthesis of middle molecular weight heparinyl amino acid derivatives (MHADs) to reduce the adverse effect of heparin (HE) based on its anticoagulant activity. Subsequently, we investigated the radical scavenging effects of 12 kinds of MHAD on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUV-ECs) damaged by oxygen free radicals using xanthine and xanthine oxidase in vitro. As a result, middle molecular weight heparinyl phenylalanine, middle molecular weight heparinyl leucine, and middle molecular weight heparinyl tyrosine showed significant protective effects on HUV-ECs. In conclusion, these three HE derivatives might be candidates for therapeutic agents to treat diseases attributed to peroxidation.

Temperature and Nitric Oxide Generation in a Pulsed Arc Discharge Plasma

Nitric oxide （NO） is increasingly being used in medical treatments of high blood pressure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and other illnesses related to the lungs. Currently a NO inhalation system consists of a gas cylinder of N2 mixed with a high concentration of NO. This arrangement is potentially risky due to the possibility of an accidental leak of NO from the cylinder. The presence of NO in the air leads to the formation of nitric dioxide （NO2）, which is toxic to the lungs. Therefore, an on-site generator of NO would be highly desirable for medical doctors to use with patients with lung disease. To develop the NO inhalation system without a gas cylinder, which would include a high concentration of NO, NAMIHIRA et al have recently reported on the production of NO from room air using a pulsed arc discharge. In the present work, the temperature of the pulsed arc discharge plasma used to generate NO was measured to optimize the discharge condition. The results of the temperature measurements showed the temperature of the pulsed arc discharge plasma reached about 10,000 K immediately after discharge initiation and gradually decreased over tens of microseconds. In addition, it was found that NO was formed in a discharge plasma having temperatures higher than 9,000 K and a smaller input energy into the discharge plasma generates NO more efficiently than a larger one.

Predictive Factors for Smartphone Dependence: Relationship to Demographic Characteristics, Chronotype, and Depressive State of University Students

We investigated factors contributing to smartphone dependence. To 196 medical university students, we administered a set of self-reporting questionnaires designed to evaluate demographic characteristics, smartphone dependence, chronotype, and depressive state. Smartphone dependence was evaluated using the Wakayama Smartphone-Dependence Scale (WSDS) with 3 subscales: Subscale 1, immersion in Internet communication;Subscale 2, using a smartphone for extended periods of time and neglecting social obligations and other tasks;Subscale 3, using a smartphone while doing something else and neglect of etiquette. Multiple regression analyses revealed that living in a family, eveningness, and presence of depression were associated with Subscale 1, that living in a family and eveningness were also associated with Subscale 2, and that being a man was associated with Subscale 3. These findings suggest that smartphone dependence can be predicted by factors such as gender, mode of residence, chronotype, or depressive state.

The effects of the pore structure of the bimodal catalyst on the residue hydrodemetallization were studied. The simulation of the intra particle reaction model suggested that an increase in the diffusivity of the macro pore increase the demetallization. The activity tests of several catalyst samples with different pore structure supported the predicted results. The new bimodal dematallization catalyst with high demetallization activity as well as large metal uptake capacity was developed, by improving the pore structure and the hydrogenation activity. The pilot runs demonstrated that the new catalyst possesses longer catalytic life as well as higher demetallization activity in the residue desulfurization process.
