Carbon-based solid lubricants are excellent options to reduce friction and wear,especially with the carbon capability to adopt different allotropes *** the macroscale,these materials are sheared on the contact along with debris and contaminants to form tribolayers that govern the tribosystem *** a recently developed advanced Raman analysis on the tribolayers,it was possible to quantify the contactinduced defects in the crystalline structure of a wide range of allotropes of carbon-based solid lubricants,from graphite and carbide-derived carbon particles to multi-layer graphene and carbon *** addition,these materials were tested under various dry sliding conditions,with different geometries,topographies,and solid-lubricant application *** of the initial tribosystem conditions and allotrope level of atomic ordering,there is a remarkable trend of increasing the point and line defects density until a specific saturation limit in the same order of magnitude for all the materials tested.

Background: Understanding the role of species identity in interactions among individuals is crucial for assessing the productivity and stability of mixed forests over time. However, there is limited knowledge concerning the variation in competitive effect and response of different species along climatic gradients. In this study, we investigated the importance of climate, tree size, and competition on the growth of three tree species: spruce(Picea abies), fir(Abies alba), and beech(Fagus sylvatica), and examined their competitive response and effect along a climatic ***: We selected 39 plots distributed across the European mountains with records of the position and growth of 5,759 individuals. For each target species, models relating tree growth to tree size, climate and competition were proposed. Competition was modelled using a neighbourhood competition index that considered the effects of inter-and intraspecific competition on target trees. Competitive responses and effects were related to *** methods and information theory were used to select the best ***: Our findings revealed that competition had a greater impact on target species growth than tree size or climate. Climate did influence the competitive effects of neighbouring species, but it did not affect the target species? response to competition. The strength of competitive effects varied along the gradient, contingent on the identity of the interacting species. When the target species exhibited an intermediate competitive effect relative to neighbouring species, both higher inter-than intraspecific competitive effects and competition reduction occurred along the gradient. Radial turbine stages are often used for applications requiring off-design operation,as turbocharging for *** off-design ability of such stages is commonly analyzed through the traditional turbine map,plotting the reduced mass-flow against the pressure-ratio,for reduced-speed ***,some alternatives are possible,such as the flow-coefficient(Ψ)to loading-coefficient(φ)diagram where the pressure-ratio lines are actually straight lines,very convenient property to perform prediction.A robust method re-creating this map from a predicted Ψ-φ diagram is *** work has shown that this back-deduction quality,without the use of any loss models,depends on the knowledge of an intermediate pressure-ratio.A modelization of this parameter is then *** comparison with both experimental and CFD results is presented,with quite good agreement for mass flow rate and rotational speed,and for the intermediate pressure *** last part of the paper is dedicated to the application of the intermediate pressure-ratio knowledge to the improvement of the deduction of the pressure ratio lines in the Ψ-φ *** this improvement,the back-deduction method of the classical map is structured,applied and evaluated.

This work is a review of previous works,presenting and discussing the most important results obtained by an ongoing research program towards the development of innovative,low-cost,self-lubricating composites with a low friction coefficient and high mechanical strength and wear *** emphasis is given to uniaxial die pressing of solid lubricant particles mixed with matrix powders and to metal injection moulding associated with in situ generation of solid lubricant ***,a microstructural model/processing route (powder injection moulding followed by plasma-assisted debinding and sintering) produced a homogeneous dispersion of in situ generated solid lubricant *** nodules of graphite with diameter smaller than 20 μm were formed,constituting a nanostructured stacking of graphite foils with nanometric *** Raman analysis indicated that the graphite nodules were composed of turbostratic 2D graphite having highly misaligned graphene planes separated by large interlamellae *** interplanar distance between the graphene foils and misalignment of these foils were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and were,probably,the origin of the outstandingly low dry friction coefficient (0.04).The effect of sintering temperature,precursor content,metallic matrix composition and surface finish is also ***,the influence of a double-pressing/double-sintering (DPDS) technique on the tribological performance of self-lubricating uniaxially die-pressed hBN + graphite-Fe-Si-C-Mo composite is also ***,the tribological behaviour of die-pressed Fe-Si-C matrix composites containing 5,7.5 and 10 wt％ solid lubricants (hBN and graphite) added during the mixing step is analysed in terms of mechanical properties and wear ***,the synergy between solid lubricant particles dispersed in a metallic matrix and fluid lubricants in a cooperative mixed lubrication regime is presented.

The applicability of immune-competent mice to model metastatic tumor progression is limited by the immunogenicity of exogenous proteins like GFP and firefly(ff)luciferase commonly used to track metastatic cells.A recent work published in Cancer Cell by Grzelak and colleagues now shows that development of mouse models that have been centrally tolerized to GFP can overcome this obstacle in transplantation models of metastasis.

This paper contains an assessment of the added value of multiscale material models for concrete in the context of macroscopic struc-tural analysis of(steel-reinforced)concrete *** examples are *** are inspired by the possibility of car accidents inside the immersed tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB).The first example deals with vehicles crashing into the tunnel *** high-dynamic strengthening effect of concrete is studied based on an engineering mechanics *** structural nature of the dynamic strength increase factor(DIF)is demonstrated by means of high-dynamic strength values measured on mortar cylinders of different ***,the evolution of the DIF as a function of hardening of concrete at material ages beyond 28 days is studied.A validated multiscale model for concrete renders a customized analysis for the specific concrete used for the aforementioned tunnel *** is found that the DIF decreases with progressive hardening of concrete at material ages beyond 28 *** second example is inspired by tunnel fires as may happen after car *** study refers to thermal stresses in steel-reinforced concrete beams sub-jected to sudden *** thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete of the tunnel is quantified by means of a multiscale *** is used as input for linear thermo-mechanical Finite-Element simulations of steel-reinforced concrete *** essential macroscopic simulation results are temperature distributions and associated stress *** are employed for top-down quantification of micro-scopic stress states inside the cement paste and the *** allows for quantifying two sources of microstructural stress fluctu-ations:(i)the macro-to-micro stress concentration and(ii)the mismatch of microscopic thermal expansion *** both examples,the multiscale models for concrete have increased the informative content of the structural simulations.
