AIM： To evaluate the safety of unsedated transnasal small-caliber esophagogastroduodenoscopy （EGD） for elderly and critically ill bedridden patients. METHODS： One prospective randomized comparative study and one crossover comparative study between transnasal small-caliber EGD and transoral conventional EGD was done （Study 1）. For the comparative study, we enrolled 240 elderly patients aged 〉 65 years old. For the crossover analysis, we enrolled 30 bedridden patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy （PEG）（Study 2）, We evaluated cardiopulmonary effects by measuring arterial oxygen saturation （SpO2） and calculating the rate-pressure product （RPP）（pulse rate x systolic blood pressure/100） at baseline, 2 and 5 min after endoscopic intubation in Study 1. To assess the risk for endoscopy-related aspiration pneumonia during EGD, we also measured blood leukocyte counts and serum C-reactive protein （CRP） levels before and 3 d after EGD in Study 2. RESULTS： In Study 1, we observed significant decreases in SpO2 during conventional transoral EGD, but not during transnasal small-caliber EGD （0.24% vs -0.24% after 2 min, and 0.18% vs -0.29% after 5 min, P = 0.034, P = 0.044）. Significant differences of the RPP were not found between conventional transoral and transnasal small-caliber EGD. In Study 2, crossover analysis showed statistically significant increases of the RPP at 2 min after intubation and the end of endoscopy （26.8 and 34.6 vs 3.1 and 15.2, P = 0.044, P = 0.046）, and decreases of SpO2 （-0.8% vs -0.1%, P = 0.042） during EGD with transoral conventional in comparison with transnasal small-caliber endoscopy. Thus, for bedridden patients with PEG feeding, who were examined in the supine position, transoral conventional EGD more severely suppressed cardiopulmonary function than transnasal small-caliber EGD. Synthesis of malachite@clay nanocomposite for rapid scavenging of cationic and anionic dyes from synthetic wastewater

Synthesis of malachite@clay nanocomposite was successfully carried out for the removal of cationic（Methylene Blue,MB） and anionic dyes（Congo Red,CR） from synthetic *** was characterized by TEM,SEM,FT-IR,EDS analysis and zeta *** analysis indicated that the particle diameter of nanocomposite was in the range of 14 to23 *** important parameters *** time,concentration of dyes,nanocomposite dosage,temperature and solution pH were optimized to achieve maximum adsorption *** the case of MB,removal decreased from 99.82%to 93.67%while for CR,removal decreased from 88.55%to 75.69%on increasing dye concentration from 100 to 450 mg/*** study confirmed the higher removal of CR in acidic range while MB removal was higher in alkaline *** study revealed the applicability of pseudo-second-order model for the adsorption of both *** values of AG0 for both systems suggested the feasibility of dye removal and support for spontaneous adsorption of CR and MB on *** showed 277.77 and 238.09 mg/g Langmuir adsorption capacity for MB and CR *** of dyes from the dye loaded nanocomposite was easily carried out with *** results indicate that the prepared malachite@clay nanocomposite is an efficient adsorbent with high adsorption capacity for the aforementioned dyes.

On the Function of Wall Sculpturing in Xylem Conduits

The water-conducting network of capillaries in vascular plants has evolved over hundreds of millions of years in order to be able to cope with bubble clogging,a problem which also affects modern microfluidic *** of anatomical studies have revealed that plants growing in habitats in which the formation of bubbles,or emboli,is likely to be a frequent occurrence often have various forms of geometrical sculpturing on the internal surfaces of the xylem *** possible function of such wall sculpturing has long been the subject of *** have investigated the hypothesis that wall sculpturing is a functional adaptation designed to increase the wettability of the walls of xylem conduits,an effect which could be described as the inverse of the well-known *** results show that wall sculpturing does enhance ***,theoretical calculations reveal that the geometric parameters of various types of wall sculpturing are such that the resulting surfaces are sufficiently rough to enhance wettability,but not significantly *** results provide an appealing answer to the long-standing debate on the function of wall sculpturing in xylem conduits,and may provide biomimetic clues for new approaches to the removal of bubbles in microfluidic channels.

Since the discovery of the hydroformylation(oxo-synthesis or Roelen reaction)and the Reppe-reaction,the transition metal-catalyzed carbonylation reactions,providing versatile,facile,and even atom-economic methods for the selective incorporation of C=O functionality to various skeletons,have gained tremendous importance in synthetic organic chemistry from laboratories to industrial *** carbonylation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds,aromatic halides,triflates,etc.,in the presence of various nucleophiles has led the way to produce aldehydes,carboxylic acids,esters,amides,etc.,in the fine chemical ***,these protocols usually proceed in conventional,fossil-based,and usually toxic reaction ***,several attempts have been directed to developing efficient carbonylation methods in alternative,less harmful,non-fossil-based and even in renewable reaction *** this review,we overview the recent applications of alternative solvents such as water,biomass-based alcohols,γ-valerolactone(GVL),2-methyltetrahydrofuran(2-MeTHF),ionic liquids(ILs),deep eutectic solvents(DES),alkyl levulinates,limonene,α-pinene,and dimethyl carbonate as well as fluorous media to improve efficiency,safety and environmentally benign nature of carbonylation protocols.

Gadolinium doped tin dioxide nanoparticles: an efficient visible light active photocatalyst

Photocatalytic degradation of phenol with sol-gel prepared rare earth doped tin dioxide （SnO2） nanoparticles was reported. Gadolinium doped tin dioxide （SnO2：Gd） nanoparticles were found to absorb higher visible light compared to lanthanum, neodymium and cerium doped materials that were studied in detail. Photocatalytic degradation of phenol under artificial white light and sunlight in the presence of SnO2：Gd nanoparticles was studied with high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC）, capillary electrophoresis （CE）, total organic carbon （TOC） measurements and the determination of chemical oxygen demand （COD）. Clear correlations be- tween the results obtained from these multiple measurements were found, and a kinetic pathway for the degradation process was pro- posed. Within 150 min of solar irradiation, the TOC of a 10 ppm phenol solution in water was reduced by 95%-99%, thus demon- strating that SnO2：Gd nanoparticles are efficient visible light photocatalysts.

Synthesis and application of biocompatible nontoxic nanoparticles for reclamation of Ce^3＋ from synthetic wastewater： Toxicity assessment, kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic study

Predictive factors for the failure of endoscopic stent-instent self-expandable metallic stent placement to treat malignant hilar biliary obstruction

AIM To investigate the factors predictive of failure when placing a second biliary self-expandable metallic stents(SEMSs). METHODS This study evaluated 65 patients with an unresectable malignant hilar biliary obstruction who were examined in our hospital. Sixty-two of these patients were recruited to the study and divided into two groups: the success group, which consisted of patients in whom a stent-in-stent SEMS had been placed successfully, and the failure group, which consisted of patients in whom the stent-in-stent SEMS had not been placed successfully. We compared the characteristics of the patients, the stricture state of their biliary ducts, and the implemented endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) procedures between the two *** The angle between the target biliary duct stricture and the first implanted SEMS was significantly larger in the failure group than in the success group. There were significantly fewer wire or dilation devices(ERCP catheter, dilator, or balloon catheter) passing the first SEMS cell in the failure group than in the success group. The cut-off value of the angle predicting stent-in-stent SEMS placement failure was 49.7 degrees according to the ROC curve(sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 61.2%). Furthermore, the angle was significantly smaller in patients with wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell than in patients without wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell. CONCLUSION A large angle was identified as a predictive factor for failure of stent-in-stent SEMS placement.

A Configuration Deactivation Algorithm for Boosting Probabilistic Roadmap Planning of Robots

We present a method to improve the execution time used to build the roadmap in probabilistic roadmap planners. Our method intelligently deactivates some of the configurations during the learning phase and allows the planner to concentrate on those configurations that axe most likely going to be useful when building the roadmap. The method can be used with many of the existing sampling algorithms. We ran tests with four simulated robot problems typical in robotics literature. The sampling methods applied were purely random, using Halton numbers, Gaussian distribution, and bridge test technique. In our tests, the deactivation method clearly improved the execution times. Compared with pure random selections, the deactivation method also significantly decreased the size of the roadmap, which is a useful property to simplify roadmap planning tasks.
