Redox Responsive Transcription Factor1 （RRTF1） in Arabidopsis is rapidly and transiently upregulated by H202, as well as biotic- and abiotic-induced redox signals. RRTF1 is highly conserved in angio- sperms, but its physiological role remains elusive. Here we show that inactivation of RRTF1 restricts and overexpression promotes reactive oxygen species （ROS） accumulation in response to stress. Transgenic lines overexpressing RRTF1 are impaired in root and shoot development, light sensitive, and susceptible to Alternaria brassicae infection. These symptoms are diminished by the beneficial root endophyte Piriformospora indica, which reduces ROS accumulation locally in roots and systemi- cally in shoots, and by antioxidants and ROS inhibitors that scavenge ROS. More than 800 genes were detected in mature leaves and seedlings of transgenic lines overexpressing RRTF1; ∽40% of them have stress-, redox-, ROS-regulated-, ROS-scavenging-, defense-, cell death- and related functions. Bioinformatic analyses and in vitro DNA binding assays demonstrate that RRTF1 binds to GCC-box-like sequences in the promoter of RRTFl-responsive genes. Upregulation of RRTF1 by stress stimuli and H202 requires WRKY18/40/60. RRTF1 is co-regulated with the phylogenet- ically related RAP2.6, which contains a GCC-box-like sequence in its promoter, but transgenic lines overexpressing RAP2.6 do not accumulate higher ROS levels. RRTF1 also stimulates systemic ROS accumulation in distal non-stressed leaves. We conclude that the elevated levels of the highly conserved RRTF1 induce ROS accumulation in response to ROS and ROS-producing abiotic and biotic stress signals.

Fixed-ratio combinations of basal insulin and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists as a promising strategy for treating diabetes

The maintenance of appropriate glycemic control is important for the prevention of diabetic complications in people with type 2 diabetes(T2D). Numerous oral antidiabetic drugs are now clinically available, but in particular, the introduction of injection regimens using insulin and/or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist(GLP-1RA)s represents promising step-up options for oral antidiabetic drug treatment. The recently licensed fixed-ratio combination(FRC) products,which comprise basal insulin and a GLP-1RA, have potent anti-hyperglycemic effects and reduce the undesirable side-effects of each component, such as body weight gain, hypoglycemia, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Two FRCs-insulin degludec/Liraglutide and insulin glargine/Lixisenatide-are now clinically available and, to date, several phase Ⅱ/Ⅲ trials have been conducted in particular groups of subjects with T2D. However, their utility in real-world clinical settings is of interest for most clinicians. Recently reported real-world clinical trials of these two FRCs in various situations have demonstrated their efficacy regarding glycemic control and the quality of life of people with T2D. Their long-term safety and efficacy require confirmation, but a treatment strategy that includes an FRC may be compatible with the concept of “well-balanced” therapy in certain groups of patients with T2D who have inadequate glycemic control.

Motivated by the determination of black hole masses with gravitational-wave observations,we calculate the evolution of massive stars through presupernova stages and obtain the mass distribution of black *** the first part,we calculate the evolution of He stars with masses of 30-120 M_(⊙).We study in detail how convective carbon shell burning controls pair-instability pulsations before and during oxygen burning and determine their final *** the second part,we calculate the evolution of H-rich stars with initial masses of 13-80 M_(⊙) until Fe core collapse and obtain the possible black hole mass range by applying the criterion of the compactness *** these models,we predict the mass distribution of black holes for stars that undergo Fe core collapse and pair-instability *** predicted masses for black holes range from 4.2 to 46 M_(⊙),which are consistent with the gravitational-wave observations.

Small sphincterotomy combined with papillary dilation with large balloon permits retrieval of large stones without mechanical lithotripsy

AIM： TO introduce a new method： small endoscopic sphincterotomy （ES） combined with endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation （SES ＋ EPLBD） to treat patients with large biliary stones.METHODS： Retrieval of large biliary stones was performed in 88 patients. Mean stone size was 14 ± 3 mm and mean number of stones was 2.5 ± 3.5. Firstly, ES with a small incision was performed. Next, endoscopic papillary dilation was performed with a large balloon to slowly match the size of the bile duct. Stones were then retrieved from the biliary duct with a balloon and a basket.RESULTS： Stone retrieval was successful in all cases except one cystic duct stone case without the need to crush large stones. Mean procedure time was 30 ± 5 min. Dilating the papillary orifice with a large balloon made it possible to remove large stones smoothly without crushing them. After dilation with the large balloon, there were some instances of oozing, but no perforations. One instance of post-procedural pancreatitis （1%） occurred. CONCLUSION： SES ＋ EPLBD was effective for the retrieval of large biliary stones without the use of mechanical lithotripsy.

We present a rare case of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in the stomach with prominent calcifica-tion at presentation. A 61-year-old woman visited our hospital because of epigastric discomfort. A spherical calcified lesion with a diameter of about 30 mm was incidentally shown in the left upper quadrant on an abdominal X-ray. Computed tomography demonstrated that the tumor was growing from the upper gastric body, with calcification in the peripheral ring area. A laparoscopic partial gastrectomy was performed, and the resected specimen revealed a well-circumscribed tumor with exophytic growth from the gastric muscularis propria. Microscopic examination revealed spindle- shaped tumor cells with calcification and hemorrhage. Additionally, positive immunoreactivity of the tumor to KIT and CD34 and a low mitotic index resulted in the diagnosis of very low risk GIST. There are a few case reports of heavily calcified GIST, although solitary or punctate calcification of primary GIST has been reported in several case series. Dystrophic calcification of necrotic or degenerative tissue is the supposed cause of primary calcified GISTs. In contrast, appearance of calcification after administration of imatinib mesylate, which may be one indicator of disease response, is possibly caused by a different mechanism.

AIM- To examine histology- and tumor-location specific risk factors of gastric cancer （GC）.METHODS： This was subjects were 216 GC the period 2000-2002 non-cancer patients hospital. We obtained habits, and others by a a case-control study. The study patients newly diagnosed during and 431 controls selected from matching in age, gender, and information on lifestyles, dietary ***： The subjects who were not eldest among his/her siblings were at a slightly elevated GC risk （OR 1.3; 95% CI 0.8-2.0）. Salting meals before tasting was related to an increased GC risk （OR 3.5; 95% CI 1.6- 7.3）. Frequent consumptions of fruits （OR 0.3; 95% CI 0.1-1.0） and vegetables （OR 0.3; 95% CI 0.1-1.0） were related to decreased GC risks. On the other hand, frying foods （OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.0-3.6） and cooking with coal （OR 1.8; 95% CI 1.3-2.6） were related to increased GC risks. Neither Lauren＇s histological classification （intestinal and diffuse types） nor tumor location significantly affected those associations except birth order. The subjects who were not eldest among his/her siblings had an increased risk of GCs in the distal and middle thirds, and their ORs were 1.7 （95% CI 1.0-2.8） and 1.9 （95% CI 0.8-4.3）, respectively. The corresponding OR in the upper third stomach was 0.3 （95% CI 0.1-0.9）. The differences of those three ORs were statistically significant （P = 0.010）.CONCLUSION： The present study shows that birth order, salt intake, consumption of fruits and vegetables, the type of cooking, and cigarette smoking are related to GC risk. In histology and tumor-location specific analyses, non-eldest person among their siblings is related to an increased GC risk in the distal and middle thirds of the stomach, and is related to a decreased GC risk in the cardia.

Oncological problems in pancreatic cancer surgery

Despite the development of more sophisticated diagnostic techniques, pancreatic carcinoma has not yet been detected in the early stage. Surgical resection provides the only chance for cure or long-term survival. The resection rate has increased due to recent advances in surgical techniques and the application of extensive surgery. However, the postoperative prognosis has been poor due to commonly occurring liver metastasis, local recurrence and peritoneal dissemination. Recent molecular-biological studies have clarified occult metastasis, micrometastasis and systemic disease in pancreatic cancer. Several oncological problems in pancreatic cancer surgery are discussed in the present review.

Extended cancer-free survival after palliative chemoradiation for metastatic esophageal cancer

We report on a patient who remained cancer-free for an extended time after palliative radiotherapy(RT) and chemotherapy(nedaplatin plus 5-fluorouracil) treatment for stage Ⅳ(cT3N3M1) esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Although multiple lymph nodes outside the RT field recurred, the local primary tumor within the RT field did not recur, even 17 mo after palliative RT of 30 Gy in 10 fractions. In this case, acute toxicity, such as myelosuppression or esophagitis, was not enhanced by increasing the fraction dose from 1.8-2.0 Gy to 3.0 Gy. Because 30 Gy in 10 fractions can be completed within a shorter time and is less expensive than 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions, we think that 30 Gy without oblique beams is a more favorable RT method for patients.

Female mice exhibit both sexual and social partner preferences for vocalizing males

Acoustic signals are widely used as courtship signals in the animal *** has long been known that male mice emit ultrasonic vocalizations(USVs)in the presence of female mice or in response to female *** observation led to the hypothesis that male USVs play a role in courtship *** previous studies showed that female mice have a social partner preference for vocalizing males,it is not known if they exhibit a sexual partner preference when given a *** address this issue,we examined the copulatory behaviors of female mice with either devocalized males(with or without the playback of the USVs)or sham-operated males in 2 different behavioral paradigms:the no-choice paradigm in the home cage of a male mouse(without choice of mating partners)or the mate-choice paradigm in a 3-chambered apparatus(with choice of mating partners).In the no-choice paradigm,female mice exhibited comparable sexual receptivity with sham-operated and devocalized *** addition,we found that female mice showed more approach behavior to-wards devocalized males when male USVs were played *** the mate-choice paradigm,female mice visited more frequently and stayed longer with sham-operated than devocalized ***,we showed that female mice received more intromissions from sham-operated males than devocalized *** summary,our results suggested that,although female mice can copulate equally with both devocalized and vocalizing males when given no choice of mating partner,female mice exhibit both sexual and social partner preferences for vocalizing males in the mate-choice paradigm.
