Habitat use and space preferences of Eurasian Bullfinches(Pyrrhula pyrrhula)in northwestern Iberia throughout the year

Background:For all vertebrates in general,a concerted effort to move beyond single season research is vital to improve our understanding of species *** of habitat use and selection by Eurasian Bullfinches(Pyrrhula pyrrhula)is limited with regard to the non-breeding *** date,research on the habitat of the Iberian subspecies iberiae consists of very general *** relation to space use,only broad features are available for the entire distribution range of Eurasian Bullfinches,including ***:In this study,seasonal preferences regarding habitat and space in a population of Eurasian Bullfinches are examined for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula,through direct observation during a six-year *** essential habitat components,substrate selection and perch height were ***:Hedgerows were the key essential habitat component for bullfinches during all ***,small poplar plantations became increasingly important from winter to *** perched mostly in shrubs/trees throughout the year,but there were significant seasonal changes in substrate use,ground and herbs being of considerable importance during *** the year,over half of the records corresponded to feeding,reaching almost 90%in ***,bullfinches perched noticeably lower while *** bullfinches perched markedly higher than females,notably singing males in *** perched at a height not much lower than that of *** all seasons,males tended to feed at greater heights than *** of different ages and sexes were seen bathing in all seasons except ***:Hedgerow habitat in general appeared to be valuable for bullfinches throughout the *** summer and autumn,they selected sites with an abundance of food and shade,as well as shelter,a much-needed requirement for fledglings and moulting *** was usually a close link between the most used

We study the directional excitation of optical surface waves controlled by the magnetic field of *** theoretically predict that a spinning magnetic dipole develops a tunable unidirectional coupling of light to transverse electric(TE)polarized Bloch surface waves(BSWs).Experimentally,we show that the helicity of light projected onto a subwavelength groove milled into the top layer of a 1D photonic crystal(PC)controls the power distribution between two TE-polarized BSWs excited on both sides of the *** a phenomenon is shown to be solely mediated by the helicity of the magnetic optical field,thus revealing a magnetic spin-orbit interaction of ***,this magnetic optical effect is clearly observed via a near-field coupler governed by an electric dipole moment:it is of the same order of magnitude as the electric optical effects involved in the *** opens up new degrees of freedom for the manipulation of light and offers desirable and novel opportunities for the development of integrated optical functionalities.

Three behaviors of epidemiological importance,namely feeding latency,feeding duration and defecation latency,for six populations of Meccus phyllosomus longipennis(Usinger)from areas of central,western and north-central Mexico with high(HP)and low(LP)prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi(Chagas)human infection were evaluated in this *** median feeding latency(the time taken to begin feeding)was highly variable between ***-instar comparisons showed that at least 65%of the LP populations(N3 to adult)started to feed significantly(P<0.05)later than the HP population,with N1 showing no difference,and N2 from LP populations feeding sooner than those from HP *** six populations had similar median feeding durations within instars.A higher(P<0.05)percentage of the instars from HP populations defecated faster than the respective instars from the three LP *** 25%of the young nymphs(N1 to N3)and females in the HP populations defecated<2 min postfeeding,compared with 4%-6%of the young nymphs and 1.3%-3%of females in the LP ***,17.7%-38.8%of the older nymphs(N4 to N5)in the HP populations and 6.8%-13.4%in the LP populations defecated during or immediately after *** results indicate that the HP populations have a greater potential than the LP populations to transmit *** infections,which may underlie the differences in the prevalence of *** infection in some areas where M *** is currently distributed.

Identification of Arceuthobium globosum using unmanned aerial vehicle images in a high mountain forest of central Mexico

In this work,the impact of the doping process on the photoluminescence emission of CaWO_(4) as a function of the concentration of Eu^(3+) cation(0.01 mol%,0.02 mol%,0.04 mol%,0.06 mol%,0.08 mol%,and 0.10 mol%) is discussed in ***_(1-x)WO~4:xEu^(3+) samples were successfully synthesized by a simple coprecipitation method followed by microwave *** blue shift in the absorption edge confirms the quantum confinement effect and the band gap energy covers the range from 3.91 to 4.18 eV,as the amount of Eu^(3+) cations *** experimental results are sustained by first-principles calculations,at the density functional theory level,to decipher the geometry and electronic properties,thereby enabling a more accurate and direct comparison between theory and experiment for the Ca_(1-x)WO_(4):xEu^(3+) structure.

Bioclimate-Vegetation Interrelations along the Pacific Rim of North America

This study was designed to examine relationships between climate and vegetation of the Pacific rim of North America, from the Mediterranean deserts of California to Alaska’s boreal taiga. Relations were inferred from temperature and rainfall data recorded at 457 weather stations and by sampling the vegetation around these stations. Climate data were used to construct climatograms, calculate forty one variables and detect main latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. In order to identify the best functions able to relate our variables, polynomial and non-polynomial regressions were performed. The k-means algorithm was the clustering method used to validate the variables that could best support our bioclimatic classification. The variable that best fitted our classification was finally used to prepare a discriminatory key for bioclimates. Across this extensive area three macrobioclimates were identified, Mediterranean, Temperate and Bo- real, within which we were able to distinguish nine bioclimates. Finally, we relate the different types of potential natural vegetation to each of these bioclimates and describe their floristic composition and physiognomy.

Heating, Cooling, and Equilibration of an Interacting Many-Fermion System

We discuss the process of equilibrium’s attainment in an interacting many-fermions system linked to a heat reservoir, whose temperature T is subject to a short-time disturbance of total duration 2τ. In this time-interval, its temperature increases up to a maximum value , cooling off afterward (also gradually) to its original value TM. The process is described by a typical master equation that leads eventually to equilibration. We discuss how the equilibration process depends upon 1) the system’s fermion-number, 2) the fermion-fermion interaction’s strength V, 3) the disturbance duration 2τ, and finally 4) the maximum number of equations N of the master equation.
