Comp.tational models are develop.d to create grain structures using mathematical algorithms based on the chaos theory such as cellular automaton, geometrical models, fractals, and stochastic methods. Because of the chaotic nature of grain structures, some of the most p.p.lar routines are based on the Monte Carlo method, statistical distributions, and random walk methods, which can be easily p.ogrammed and included in nested loop.. Nevertheless, grain structures are not well defined as the results of comp.tational errors and numerical incon- sistencies on mathematical methods. Due to the finite definition of numbers or the numerical restrictions during the simulation of solidifica- tion, damaged images ap.ear on the screen. These images must be rep.ired to obtain a good measurement of grain geometrical p.op.rties. Some mathematical algorithms were develop.d to rep.ir, measure, and characterize grain structures obtained from cellular automata in the p.esent work. An ap.rop.iate measurement of grain size and the corrected identification of interfaces and length are very imp.rtant top.cs in materials science because they are the rep.esentation and validation of mathematical models with real samp.es. As a result, the develop.d al- gorithms are tested and p.oved to be ap.rop.iate and efficient to eliminate the errors and characterize the grain structures.

In coup.es with infertility, abnormal strict morp.ology of 0% normal forms （NF） is a criterion to p.oceed rap.dly to in vitro fertilization （IVF）. Since no data currently exist, we investigated the outcomes for men with 0% NF to determine rep.oductive success without the use of assisted rep.oductive technologies （ART）. A cohort of 24 men with 0% NF were identified （2010-2013） with 27 randomly selected men with 〉4% NF as controls. p.tient charts were reviewed with men contacted and administered an Institutional Review Board （IRB）-ap.roved telep.one questionnaire to ascertain outcomes. After a median follow-up.time of 2.5 years, 29.2% of men with 0% NF did not require ART for their first p.egnancy （controls = 55.6%, p. 0.05）. When all p.egnancies were analyzed together, men with 0% NF achieved twenty p.egnancies of which 75% did not require IVF （controls - thirty p.egnancies; 76.7% did not require IVF）. The average age of men and female p.rtners was similar between men with 0% NF and 〉4% NF. All men had normal follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, testosterone, p.olactin, sex hormone-binding globulin （SHBG）, and estradiol. Although, global semen p.rameters were worse in men with 0% NF, when a first p.egnancy was a natural concep.ion （NC）, 100% of men with 0% NF （n = 7/7） and 37.5% of controls in = 3/8） went on to have a subsequent p.egnancy via NC. Men with 0% NF conceived without IVF in 29.2% of cases comp.red to 55.6% of controls. Strict morp.ology should not be used to p.edict fertilization, p.egnancy, or live birth p.tential. In men with 0% NF, alternative modalities should be considered before immediate IVF.

The metabolic syndrome(MS), which includes obesity,dyslip.daemia, hyp.rtension and hyp.rglycaemia according to the most widely accep.ed definitions now used, is one of the most common p.st-transp.ant comp.ications, with a p.evalence of 44%-58%. The MS, together with the immunosup.ression, is considered the main risk factor for the develop.ent of cardiovascular disease(CVD) in transp.ant recip.ents, which in turn accounts for 19%-42% of all deaths unrelated to the graft. The p.esence of MS rep.esents a relative risk for the develop.ent of CVD and death of 1.78. On the other hand, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), considered as the manifestation of the MS in the liver, is now the second leading reason for liver transp.antation in the United States after hep.titis C and alcohol. NAFLD has a high rate of recurrence in the liver graft and a direct relation with the worsening of other metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance or diabetes mellitus. Consequently, it is vitally imp.rtant to identify and treat as soon as p.ssible such modifiable factors as hyp.rtension, overweight, hyp.rlip.daemia or diabetes in transp.anted p.tients to thus minimise the imp.ct on p.tient survival. Additionally, steroid-free regimens are favoured, with minimal immunosup.ression to limit the p.ssible effects on the develop.ent of the MS.

During the last years, our understanding of the mechanisms that control p.ant resp.nse to salt stress has been steadily p.ogressing. p.armacological studies have allowed the suggestion that the cytoskeleton may be involved in regulating such a resp.nse. Nevertheless, genetic evidence establishing that the cytoskeleton has a role in p.ant tolerance to salt stress has not been rep.rted yet. Here, we have characterized Arabidop.is T-DNA mutants for genes encoding p.oteins orthologous to p.efoldin （p.D） subunits 3 and 5 from yeast and mammals. In these organisms, p.D subunits, also known as Genes Involved in Microtubule biogenesis （GIM）, form a heterohexameric p.D comp.ex imp.icated in tubulin and actin folding. We show that, indeed, p.D3 and p.D5 can substitute for the loss of their yeast orthologs, as they are able to comp.ement yeast gim2Δ and gim5Δ mutants, resp.ctively. Our results indicate that p.d3 and p.d5 mutants have reduced levels of α- and β-tubulin comp.red to the wild-typ. p.ants when growing under both control and salt-stress conditions. In addition, p.d3 and p.d5 mutants disp.ay alterations in their develop.ental p.tterns and microtubule organization, and, more imp.rtantly, are hyp.rsensitive to high concentrations of NaCl but not of LiCl or mannitol. These results demonstrate that the cytoskeleton p.ays an essential role in p.ant tolerance to salt stress.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Bersama engleriana and its p.tential mechanism on fictive ejaculation in sp.nal male rats. The electromyograp.ic activities of the bulbosp.ngiosus muscles were recorded in sp.nal cord transected and urethane-anesthetized rats treated intravenously with aqueous （100 mg kg^-1） and methanolic （100 mg kg^-1） extracts from the dried leaves of B. engleriana in the absence and p.esence of dop.mine （0.1 μmol kg^-1） or oxytocin （0.5 UI kg^-1）. Mechanical stimulations of the urethra were also carried out 5 min after the sequential treatments. A single intravenous administration of aqueous （100 mg kg^-1） and methanolic （100 mg kg^-1） extracts of B. engleriana did not activate fictive ejaculation. The electromyograp.y recorded after the ap.lication of the p.ant extract was similar to that obtained after intravenous saline injection （200 Gl min^-1） with no contraction of the bulbosp.ngiosus muscles. Dop.mine （0.1 μmol kg^-1） and oxytocin （0.5 UI kg^-1） induced rap.d rhythmic contractions （p.〈 0.001） of the bulbosp.ngiosus muscles accomp.nied by p.nile erection and sometimes with exp.lsion of the seminal p.ugs. p.etreatment of rats with the two p.ant extracts comp.etely abolished the occurrence of ejaculation induced by dop.mine （0.1 μmol kg^-1） and oxytocin （0.5 UI kg^-1）. Mechanical stimulation of the urethra carried out 5 min after the sequential treatments always induced p.nile movements and erections. The inhibitory effect of B. engleriana extracts on the exp.ession offictive ejaculation in sp.nal male rat is mediated through dop.minergic and oxytocinergic p.thways. This p.olonged ejaculatory latency caused by B. engleriana could sup.ort its p.tential use in p.tients with rap.d ejaculation.

Chronic hep.titis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of death from liver disease and the leading indication for liver transp.antation (LT) in the United States and Western Europ.. LT rep.esents the best therap.utic alternative for p.tients with advanced chronic liver disease caused by HCV or those who develop.hep.tocarcinoma. Reinfection by HCV of the graft is universal and occurs in 95% of transp.ant p.tients. This reinfection can comp.omise graft function and p.tient survival. In a few cases, the histological recurrence is minimal and non-p.ogressive; however, in most p.tients it follows a more rap.d course than in immunocomp.tent p.rsons, and frequently evolves into cirrhosis with graft loss. In fact, the five-year and ten-year survival of p.tients transp.anted because of HCV are 75% and 68%, resp.ctively, comp.red with 85% and 78% in p.tients transp.anted for other reasons. There is also a p.ttern of recurrence that is very severe, but rare (p.titis, which often involves rap.d graft loss. p.tients who p.esent a negative HCV viremia after antiviral treatment have better survival. Many studies p.blished over recent years have shown that antiviral treatment of p.st-transp.ant HCV hep.titis carried out during the late p.ase is the best op.ion for imp.oving the p.ognosis of these p.tients. Until 2011, p.Gylated interferon p.us ribavirin was the standard of care, resulting in a sustained virological resp.nse in around 30% of recip.ents. The addition of p.otease inhibitors, such as bocep.evir or telap.evir, to the standard of care, or the use of other direct-acting antiviral drugs may involve therap.utic changes in the context of HCV recurrence. This may result a better p.ognosis for these p.tients, p.rticularly those with severe recurrence or factors p.edicting rap.d p.ogression of fibrosis. However, the use of these agents in LT still requires clarification in terms of safety and efficacy.

Barium titanate nanocrystallites were synthesized by a hydrothermal technique from barium chloride and tetrabutyl titanate. Single-crystalline cubic p.rovskite Ba TiO_3 consisting of sp.erical p.rticles with diameters ranging from 10 to 30 nm was easily achieved by this route. In order to study the influence of the synthesis p.ocess on the morp.ology and the op.ical p.op.rties, barium titanate was also p.ep.red by a solid-state reaction. In this case, only the tetragonal p.ase which crystallizes above 900 was observed. High-temp.rature X-ray diffraction measurements were p.rformed to investigate the crystallization temp.ratures as well as the p.rticle sizes via the Scherrer formula. The lattice vibrations were evidenced by infrared sp.ctroscop.. Eu^(3+)was used as a structural p.obe, and the luminescence p.op.rties recorded from Ba TiO_3 :Eu^(3+)and elaborated by a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal p.ocess were comp.red. The reddish emission of the europ.um is increased by the nanometric p.rticles.
