Assessment of an alternative to deep.foundations in comp.essible clays： the structural cell foundation

The new typ. of deep.foundation for buildings on saturated, comp.essible-low strength clayey soil dep.sits, branded structural cell essentially consists of a rigid concrete top.slab, structurally connected to reinforced concrete p.rip.eral walls （diap.ragms） that enclose the natural soil. Accordingly, as the initial volume of the confined soft clays within the lateral stiff diap.ragms will remain constant up.n loading, the hollowed structural cell will be ＂transformed＂ into a very large cross-section p.llar of unit weight slightly higher than that of the natural soft clayey soil. This typ. of foundation seems to be a highly comp.titive alternative to the friction p.le-box foundations （widely used in Mexico City clays）, due to its economic and environmental advantages. Economies result, for examp.e, from the absence of huge excavations hence sp.ring the need of earth retaining structures. Further savings result from ap.reciably smaller concrete volumes required for building the structural cell than the friction p.le-box foundation; moreover, the construction time of the former is much shorter than that of the latter. Regarding the imp.ct to the environment, less air contamination follows from the fact that both traffic jams and soil excavation lessen ap.reciably. Considering these facts and others regarding scheduling, it was decided to rep.ace 48-friction p.le-box foundations sp.cified in the master p.an p.oject by this new typ. of foundation. The overall behavior of these cell foundations over a five-year p.riod is fared from close visual observations and their leveling during the first three years after their construction.

Severe earthquakes can induce damages to Concrete Face Rocldill Dams (CFRDs)such as concrete cracking and joint's water stop. distressing where high in-p.ane transversal normal stresses *** these damages rarely jeop.rdize the dam safety,they cause large water reservoir leakages that hinder the dam *** issue can be addressed using well know numerical methods;however,given the wide range of p.rameters involved,it would seem ap.rop.iate to develop.a simp.e yet reliable p.ocedure to get a close understanding how their interaction affects the CFRD's overall ***,once the p.ysics of the p.oblem is better understood one can p.oceed to p.rform a detailed design of the various comp.nents of the *** this end an easy-to-use p.ocedure that accounts for the dam height effects,valley narrowness,valley slop.s,width of concrete slabs and seismic excitation characteristics was *** p.ocedure is the dynamic comp.ement of a method recently develop.d to evaluate in-p.ane transversal normal stresses in the concrete face of CFRD's due to dam reservoir filling [1].Using these two p.ocedures in a sequential manner,it is p.ssible to define the concrete slab in-p.ane normal stresses induced by the reservoir filling and the action of orthogonal horizontal seismic excitations acting at the same time up.tream-downstream and cross *** p.ocedures were develop.d from a data base generated using nonlinear static and dynamic three-dimensional numerical analyses on the same group.of CFRD'***,the results were interp.eted with the Buckingham p. theorem and various relationship. were *** the above reference,the method to evaluate the concrete face in-p.ane transversal normal stresses caused by the first reservoir filling was *** this p.p.r,the seismic p.ocedure is first develop.d and then through an examp.e the whole method (dam construction,reservoir filling p.us seismic loading)of analysis is assessed.

Housing develop.ent has become one of the main strategies to alleviate imp.verished communities in develop.ng countries. In the p.st, p.licies and p.ograms focused on either economic or social asp.cts, and numerous imp.rted solutions had failed to p.oduce satisfactory results. At p.esent, holistic ap.roaches integrating all dimensions of human activity and environmental imp.ct are gaining recognition as suitable alternatives for various exp.riences in develop.ng nations. However, these ap.roaches do not p.op.rly consider the local context, which is different for each case, thereby leading to inadequate models and unsuccessful imp.ementations. This p.p.r p.esents a context-driven and integrated ap.roach for rural areas in develop.ng nations for one of the most basic human endeavors, i.e., constructing a house. The self-building p.ocess utilized in constructing houses is a major strategy to help.communities overcome p.verty. Such a house must be cap.ble of accommodating economic activities; must be durable yet flexible in layout and size; and must offer all basic services, including water, sanitation, and energy. Consequently, the Inclusive Housing p.ogram is develop.d and emp.oyed in Oe-Cusse, a remote region of East Timor, as an integral p.rt of the Regional p.an.

The ap.licatio n of nano p.rticles as selective drug delivery p.atforms arises as one the most p.omising therap.utic strategies in the biomedical field. Such systems can encap.ulate drugs, p.event its p.emature degradation, transp.rt and p.0}te the drugs sp.cific delivery to the target site. Among the different nanostructures, gold-core mesop.rous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods have been one of the most exp.ored due to their unique p.ysical and chemical p.op.rties. The mesop.rous silica biocomp.tibility, high surface area that can be easily functionalized, tubular p.res that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic cap.city of gold nanorod to absorb near-infrared radiation, allows the combination of hyp.rthermia (i.e., p.otothermal effect) with drug delivery, making them a nanop.atforms with a huge p.tential for cancer therap.. Nevertheless, the successful ap.licati on of AuMSS nanop.rticles as an effective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of the therap.utic p.yloads, limited blood circulation time and unfavorable p.armacokinetics. In this review, an overview of the modificati ons p.rformed to imp.ove the AuMSS nano rods ap.licati on in nanom edicine is p.ovided, highlighting the p.actical ap.roaches that enhaneed the AuMSS nanorods targeting, resp.nsiveness to different stimuli, and blood circulation time. Further, the basics of AuMSS nano rods syn thesis p.ocedures, gen eral p.op.rties, and its ap.licati on in can cer therap. are also described.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of Chinese Traditional Medicine, acup.ncture and moxa treatment, on the semen quality in p.tients with semen abnormalities. Methods: In a p.osp.ctive, controlled and blind study, nineteen p.tients, aged 24 years-42 years and married for 3 years-11 years without children with semen abnormalities in concentration, morp.ology and/or p.ogressive motility without ap.arent cause, were randomized into two group. and submitted to acup.ncture and moxa treatment at the therap.utic (Study Group. and the indifferent p.ints (Control Group., resp.ctively, for 10 weeks. Semen analyses were p.rformed before and after the treatment course. Results: The p.tients of the Study Group.p.esented a significant increase in the p.rcentage of normal-form sp.rm comp.red to the Control Group.(calculated U=16.0, critical U=17.0). Conclusion: The Chinese Traditional Medicine acup.ncture and moxa techniques significantly increase the p.rcentage of normal-form sp.rm in infertile p.tients with oligoastenoteratozoosp.rmia without ap.arent cause.

The tyrosine kinase recep.or vascular endothelial growth factor recep.or 2 （VEG FR2） is a key regulator of angiogenesis. Here we show that VEGFR2 is acetylated in endothelial cells both at four lysine residues forming a dense cluster in the kinase insert domain and at a single lysine located in the recep.or activation loop. These modifications are under dynamic control of the acetyltransferase p.00 and two deacetyiases HDAC5 and HDAC6. We demonstrate that VEGFR2 acetylation essentially regulates recep.or p.osp.orylation. In p.r- ticular, VEGFR2 acetylation significantly alters the kinetics of recep.or p.osp.orylation after ligand binding, allowing recep.or p.os- p.oryiation and intraceUular signaling up.n p.oLonged stimulation with VEGF. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that acetylation of the lysine in the activation loop.contributes to the transition to an op.n active state, in which tyrosine p.osp.orylation is favored by better exp.sure of the kinase target residues. These findings indicate that p.st-translational modification by acetyiation is a critical mechanism that directLy affects VEGFR2 function.

We demonstrate how the many-body p.tential energy landscap. of carbon can be exp.ored with the nested samp.ing algorithm,allowing for the calculation of its p.essure-temp.rature p.ase *** comp.re four interatomic p.tential models:Tersoff,EDIp.GAp.20 and its recently up.ated version,*** evaluation is focused on their macroscop.c p.op.rties,melting transitions,and identifying thermodynamically stable solid structures up.to at least 100 *** p.ase diagrams of the GAp.models show good agreement with exp.rimental ***,we find that the models’descrip.ion of grap.ite includes thermodynamically stable p.ases with incorrect layer *** adding a suitable selection of structures to the database and re-training the p.tential,we have derived an imp.oved model—GAp.20U+gr—that sup.resses erroneous local minima in the grap.itic energy *** extreme high p.essure nested samp.ing identifies two novel stable structures in the GAp.20 model,however,the stability of these is not confirmed by electronic structure calculations,highlighting routes to further extend the ap.licability of the GAp.models.
