Use of animal models in preclinical transplant research is essential to the optimization of human allografts for clinical transplantation.Animal models of organ donation and preservation help to advance and improve technical elements of solid organ recovery and facilitate research of ischemia-reperfusion injury,organ preservation strategies,and future donor-based interventions.Important considerations include cost,public opinion regarding the conduct of animal research,translational value,and relevance of the animal model for clinical practice.We present an overview of two porcine models of organ donation:donation following brain death(DBD)and donation following circulatory death(DCD).The cardiovascular anatomy and physiology of pigs closely resembles those of humans,making this species the most appropriate for pre-clinical research.Pigs are also considered a potential source of organs for human heart and kidney xenotransplantation.It is imperative to minimize animal loss during procedures that are surgically complex.We present our experience with these models and describe in detail the use cases,procedural approach,challenges,alternatives,and limitations of each model.

Machine learning guided high-throughput search of non-oxide garnets

Garnets have found important applications in modern technologies including magnetorestriction,spintronics,lithium batteries,etc.The overwhelming majority of experimentally known garnets are oxides,while explorations(experimental or theoretical)for the rest of the chemical space have been limited in scope.A key issue is that the garnet structure has a large primitive unit cell,requiring a substantial amount of computational resources.To perform a comprehensive search of the complete chemical space for new garnets,we combine recent progress in graph neural networks with high-throughput calculations.We apply the machine learning model to identify the potentially(meta-)stable garnet systems before performing systematic density-functional calculations to validate the predictions.We discover more than 600 ternary garnets with distances to the convex hull below 100 meV⋅atom−1.This includes sulfide,nitride,and halide garnets.We analyze their electronic structure and discuss the connection between the value of the electronic band gap and charge balance.

Recent advances in magnetorheological elastomers(MRes)have posed the question on whether the combination of both soft-and hard-magnetic particles may open new routes to design versatile multifunctional actuators.Here,we conceptualise ultra-soft hybrid MRes(≈1–10 kPa stiffness)combining experimental and computational approaches.First,a comprehensive experimental characterisation is performed.The results unravel that the magneto-mechanical performance of hybrid MRes can be optimised by selecting an adequate mixing ratio between particles.Then,a multi-physics computational framework provides insights into the synergistic magneto-mechanical interactions at the microscale.Soft particles amplify the magnetisation and hard particles contribute to torsional actuation.Our numerical results suggest that the effective response of hybrid MRes emerges from these intricate interactions.Overall,we uncover exciting possibilities to push the frontiers of MRe solutions.These are demonstrated by simulating a bimorph beam that provides actuation flexibility either enhancing mechanical bending or material stiffening,depending on the magnetic stimulation.

随着老龄化程度的加深和家庭养老能力的降低,机构养老的需求量不断攀升。本文基于价值医疗视角,采用中国老年健康影响因素跟踪调查(CLHLS)数据,运用固定效应模型对机构养老模式的医疗费用和健康结果进行评估。研究发现:机构养老模式有利于降低医疗费用;机构养老模式通过减少问诊就医和住院治疗进而降低老年人的医疗费用,通过规范老年人生活方式、提高医疗效率进而提升老年人健康水平,但机构养老模式缺乏对心理健康的关注,不利于提升老年人健康水平。机构养老模式的医疗控费效果在轻度失能和中度失能老年人中更为明显,且机构养老模式明显降低了失智老年人的健康水平。本文的研究对于实现价值医疗目标的同时提升机构养老服务质量具有一定的参考价值。

Attenuated retinoic acid signaling is among the early responses in mouse uterus approaching embryo attachment

The uterus is transiently receptive for embryo implantation. It remains to be understood why the uterus does not reject a semi-allogeneic embryo (to the biological mother) or an allogeneic embryo (to a surrogate) for implantation. To gain insights, we examined uterine early response genes approaching embryo attachment on day 3 post coitum (D3) at 22 hours when blue dye reaction, an indication of embryo attachment, had not manifested in mice. C57BL/6 pseudo-pregnant (control) and pregnant mouse uteri were collected on D3 at 22 hours for microarray analysis. The self-assembling-manifold (SAM) algorithm identified 21,858 unique probesets. Principal component analysis indicated a clear separation between the pseudo-pregnant and pregnant groups. There were 106 upregulated and five downregulated protein-coding genes in the pregnant uterus with fold change (fc) >1.5 andq value ene ontology (GO) analysis of the 106 upregulated genes revealed 38 significant GO biological process (GOBP) terms (P em were associated with immune responses, with a dominant natural killer (NK) cell activation signature. Among the top eight upregulated protein-coding genes,Cyp26a1 inactivates retinoic acid (RA) whileLrat promotes vitamin A storage, both of which are expected to attenuate RA bioavailability;Atp6v0d2 andGjb2 play roles in ion transport and transmembrane transport;Gzmb,Gzmc, andIl2rb are involved in immune responses; andTdo2 is important for kynurenine pathway. Most of these genes or their related pathways have functions in immune regulations. RA signaling has been implicated in immune tolerance and immune homeostasis, and uterine NK cells have been implicated in immunotolerance at the maternal-fetal interface in the placenta. The mechanisms of immune responses approaching embryo attachment remain to be elucidated. The coordinated effects of the early response genes may hold the keys to the question of why the uterus does not reject an implanting embryo.

To meet the rapidly increasing demand for energy and the dramatic depletion of conventional crude oil,it is imperative to utilize sour naphtha.With no coke being produced,oxidative desulfurization(ODS)of naphtha lowers its sulfur content and average molecular weight.In this article,we outline a method for heavy naphtha non-extractive ODS using a very stable catalyst.The technique involves the use of a solid catalyst with oxygen gas as the oxidant.This necessitated relatively high mixing intensities;hence a three-phase Oscillatory Baffled Reactor(OBR)was used.The catalyst was based on the zeolite ZSM-5,prepared from natural kaolin by a series of delamination and activation steps and impregnated with Fe.A TiO2 nanolayer was applied,using the sol-gel method,to prevent rapid deactivation.The reactor performance was evaluated to minimize the sulfur content in the naphtha fuel.Due to the protective coating,the sulfur conversion stabilized at 90%.The results of this work establish the use of natural clay-based catalysts in a continuous,three-phase ODS,particularly with regard to proving long-term stability.It also showed that modest ODS can be achieved using an environmentally friendly oxidant,at mild operating conditions,whilst maintaining stability.

We investigate decomposition of codes and finite languages. A prime decomposition is a decomposition of a code or languages into a concatenation of nontrivial prime codes or languages. A code is prime if it cannot be decomposed into at least two nontrivial codes as the same for the languages. In the paper, a linear time algorithm is designed, which finds the prime decomposition. If codes or finite languages are presented as given by its minimal deterministic automaton, then from the point of view of abstract algebra and graph theory, this automaton has special properties. The study was conducted using system for computational Discrete Algebra GAP. .

The expansion of the Internet of Moving Things(IoMT)leads to limitless and continuous working playgrounds exploited by highly dynamic end devices.This requires the adoption of multi-Radio Access Technologies(RATs)-based strategies to provide IoMT units with ubiquitous connectivity.To this end,the development of secure bootstrapping and authentication mechanisms is necessary to permit the secure operation of end devices.Given the transmission and power limitations of these elements,current cryptographic solutions do not address these stringent requirements.For that reason,in the study we present a Multi-Access edge Computing(MeC)-based endto-end architecture that enables an efficient and secure authentication and key agreement between end devices and network servers over heterogeneous resource-limited networks such as the Low Power Wide Area Networks(LPWANs).Our proposal is based on the Authentication,Authorization,and Accounting(AAA)architecture and the recent Internet engineering Task Force initiatives Static Context Header Compression and Low-Overhead CoAP-eAP.The results obtained from experimental tests reveal the validity of the proposal as it enables constrained IoMT devices to gain IPv6 connectivity as well as performs end-to-end secure authentication with notable reliability and controlled latency.
