Task Offloading in Edge Computing Using GNNs and DQN

In a network environment composed of different types of computing centers that can be divided into different layers(clod,edge layer,and others),the interconnection between them offers the possibility of peer-to-peer task offloading.For many resource-constrained devices,the computation of many types of tasks is not feasible because they cannot support such computations as they do not have enough available memory and processing capacity.In this scenario,it is worth considering transferring these tasks to resource-rich platforms,such as Edge Data Centers or remote cloud servers.For different reasons,it is more exciting and appropriate to download various tasks to specific download destinations depending on the properties and state of the environment and the nature of the functions.At the same time,establishing an optimal offloading policy,which ensures that all tasks are executed within the required latency and avoids excessive workload on specific computing centers is not easy.This study presents two alternatives to solve the offloading decision paradigm by introducing two well-known algorithms,Graph Neural Networks(GNN)and Deep Q-Network(DQN).It applies the alternatives on a well-known Edge Computing simulator called PureEdgeSimand compares them with the two defaultmethods,Trade-Off and Round Robin.Experiments showed that variants offer a slight improvement in task success rate and workload distribution.In terms of energy efficiency,they provided similar results.Finally,the success rates of different computing centers are tested,and the lack of capacity of remote cloud servers to respond to applications in real-time is demonstrated.These novel ways of finding a download strategy in a local networking environment are unique as they emulate the state and structure of the environment innovatively,considering the quality of its connections and constant updates.The download score defined in this research is a crucial feature for determining the quality of a download path in the GNN training process and has not previous

Recent advances in magnetorheological elastomers(MREs)have posed the question on whether the combination of both soft-and hard-magnetic particles may open new routes to design versatile multifunctional actuators.Here,we conceptualise ultra-soft hybrid MREs(≈1–10 kPa stiffness)combining experimental and computational approaches.First,a comprehensive experimental characterisation is performed.The results unravel that the magneto-mechanical performance of hybrid MREs can be optimised by selecting an adequate mixing ratio between particles.Then,a multi-physics computational framework provides insights into the synergistic magneto-mechanical interactions at the microscale.Soft particles amplify the magnetisation and hard particles contribute to torsional actuation.Our numerical results suggest that the effective response of hybrid MREs emerges from these intricate interactions.Overall,we uncover exciting possibilities to push the frontiers of MRE solutions.These are demonstrated by simulating a bimorph beam that provides actuation flexibility either enhancing mechanical bending or material stiffening,depending on the magnetic stimulation.

Bronchiectasis and COVID-19 infection:a two-way street

Bronchiectasis(BE)has been linked to past viral infections such as influenza,measles,or adenovirus.Two years ago,a new pandemic viral infection severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)broke out and it still persists today,and a significant proportion of surviving patients have radiological and clinical sequelae,including BE.Our aim was to thoroughly review the information available in the literature on the bidirectional relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the development of BE,as well as the impact of this infection on patients already suffering from BE.Available information indicates that only a small percentage of patients in the acute phase of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pneumonia develop BE,although the latter is recognized as one of the radiological sequelae of COVID-19 pneumonia,especially when it is caused by traction.The severity of the initial pneumonia is the main risk factor for the development of future BE,but during the COVID-19 pandemic,exacerbations in BE patients were reduced by approximately 50%.Finally,the impact of BE on the prognosis of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia is not yet known.

Because of the presence of modified warp factors in metric tensors,we use deformed AdS5 spaces to apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the spectra for even and odd glueballs,scalar and vector mesons,and baryons with different spins.For the glueball cases,we derive their Regge trajectories and compare them with those related to the pomeron and the odderon.For the scalar and vector mesons,as well as baryons,the determined masses are compatible with the PDG.In particular,for these hadrons we found Regge trajectories compatible with another holographic approach as well as with the hadronic spectroscopy,which present an universal Regge slope of approximately 1.1 GeV^2.

Background The association between parental perception of child's weight and their attitudes towards his/her dietary habits has not been reported yet.This study aimed to assess the association between parental underestimation of child's weight and parental attitudes towards child's dietary habits.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of SENDO cohort participants recruited between January 2015 and June 2020.All information was collected through online questionnaires completed by parents.We calculated crude and multivariable-adjusted odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence intervals(CI)for unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary habits associated with parental underestimation of child's weight.Results Sixteen percent of children in the SENDO project had parents who underestimated their weight.Parents who under-estimated their child's weight status were more likely to have unhealthy attitudes toward his/her dietary habits[OR 3.35;95%CI(1.71-6.53)].Conclusions Parental underestimation of child's weight was associated with unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary hab-its.Pediatricians and public health practitioners should pay attention to the parental perception of child's weight to identify parents who underestimate it as an at-risk group in which to inquire about lifestyle and dietary habits.

Beyond their function as structural barriers,plant cell walls are essential elements for the adaptation of plants to environmental conditions.Cell walls are dynamic structures whose composition and integrity can be altered in response to environmental challenges and developmental cues.These wall changes are perceived by plant sensors/receptors to trigger adaptative responses during development and upon stress perception.Plant cell wall damage caused by pathogen infection,wounding,or other stresses leads to the release of wall molecules,such as carbohydrates(glycans),that function as damage-associated molecular patterns(DAMPs).DAMPs are perceived by the extracellular ectodomains(ECDs)of pattern recognition receptors(PRRs)to activate pattern-triggered immunity(PTI)and disease resistance.Similarly,glycans released from the walls and extracellular layers of microorganisms interacting with plants are recognized as microbe-associated molecular patterns(MAMPs)by specific ECD-PRRs triggering PTI responses.The number of oligosaccharides DAMPs/MAMPs identified that are perceived by plants has increased in recent years.However,the structural mechanisms underlying glycan recognition by plant PRRs remain limited.Currently,this knowledge is mainly focused on receptors of the LysM-PRR family,which are involved in the perception of various molecules,such as chitooligosaccharides from fungi and lipo-chitooligosaccharides(i.e.,Nod/MYC factors from bacteria and mycorrhiza,respectively)that trigger differential physiological responses.Nevertheless,additional families of plant PRRs have recently been implicated in oligosaccharide/polysaccharide recognition.These include receptor kinases(RKs)with leucine-rich repeat and Malectin domains in their ECDs(LRR-MAL RKs),Catharanthus roseus RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 1-LIKE group(CrRLK1L)with Malectin-like domains in their ECDs,as well as wall-associated kinases,lectin-RKs,and LRR-extensins.The characterization of structural basis of glycans recognition by these new plant receptors will shed light

Compelling shreds of evidence derived from both clinical and experimental research have demonstrated the crucial contribution of receptor for advanced glycation end products(RAGE)axis activation in the development of neoplasms,including gastric cancer(GC).This new actor in tumor biology plays an important role in the onset of a crucial and long-lasting inflammatory milieu,not only by supporting phenotypic changes favoring growth and dissemination of tumor cells,but also by functioning as a pattern-recognition receptor in the inflammatory response to Helicobacter pylori infection.In the present review,we aim to highlight how the overexpression and activation of the RAGE axis contributes to the proliferation and survival of GC cells as and their acquisition of more invasive phenotypes that promote dissemination and metastasis.Finally,the contribution of some single nucleotide polymorphisms in the RAGE gene as susceptibility or poor prognosis factors is also discussed.

Dear editor,Biological periodicities occur based on a periodicity in a spectrum of frequencies ranging from milliseconds to years.A circadian rhythm is any biological process that displays an endogenous oscillation of about 24 h[1].Cir-cadian rhythm is the adaption of our bodies’biological processes to the day and night cycle.The biological clock is reset daily to synchronize with the exposure to sunlight because our internal clock repeats at around 24 h[1].Because of the use of artificial light,our internal clock is influenced by multiple factors,including social interac-tions[1].

Senning operation for correction of the transposition of the great arteries, results, long-term outcome and quality of life

Objective: Long-term results after the Senning operation for transposition of the great arteries are little known. Sinus node dysfunction and systemic ventricular dysfunction are crucial in patient survival. We evaluated the results, long term outcome and quality of life in a group of 39 patients. Methods: The study was a retrospective analysis, of 39 (39/40 = 97.5%) surgical surviving patients, submitted to Senning operation, with a mean follow-up time of 14.7 +/– 3.1 years. Electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and chest radiograph series were performed every 6 months. Thirty six patients of this series underwent Holter study and ergometric test, to evaluate the physical capacity. Three patients living overseas were excluded. Results: There was only one late death (1/39) (late mortality = 2.5%): a 16 year-old patient had a no cardiac death. The actuarial survival was 95.0% (38/40) (simple or with little VSD, TGA). The probability of staying in sinus rhythm, in 39 surviving patients was 77.1% (30) or normal right ventricular function was 76.5% (29), 10 to 20 years after operation. The incidence of sinus node and right ventricular dysfunction increased gradually over time. No re-operations and pacemaker implantation, was performed. Functional class: I = 30 (85.7%) cases and functional class II = 5 (14.3%) cases. Conclusions: Patients with simple TGA submitted to Senning procedure in our experience, presented during late follow-up: 1—Low incidence of right ventricular dysfunction and active arrhythmias;2—Low mortality and no sudden death recorded;3—Good quality of life and 4—Satisfactory surgical results (free of re-operation or definitive pacemaker implantation).

Biometric and ICL-related risk factors associated to sub-optimal vaults in eyes implanted with implantable collamer lenses

Background:To identify biometric and implantable collamer lens(ICL)-related risk factors associated with suboptimal postoperative vault in eyes implanted with phakic ICL.Methods:This study reports a retrospective case series of the first operated eye in 360 patients implanted with myopic spherical or toric ICL.Preoperatively,white-to-white(WTW),central keratometry(Kc)and central corneal thickness(CCT)were measured using the Pentacam.Anterior-segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT,Visante)was applied preoperatively for measuring the horizontal anterior-chamber angle-to-angle distance(ATA),internal anterior chamber depth(ACD),crystalline lens rise(CLR),anterior-chamber angle(ACA)and postoperatively the vault.Eyes were divided into three vault groups:low(LVG:≤250μm),optimal(OVG:>250 and<1000μm)and high(HVG:≥1000μm).Multinomial logistic regression(MLR)was used to find the sub-optimal vault predictors.Results:MLR showed that CLR,ICL size minus the ATA(ICL size-ATA),age,ICL spherical equivalent(ICLSE)and ICL size as contributing factors for sub-optimal vaults(pseudo-R2=0.40).Increased CLR(OR:1.01,CI:1.00-1.01)and less myopic ICLSE(OR:1.22,CI:1.07-1.40)were risk factors for low vaults.Larger ICL size-ATA(OR:41.29,CI:10.57-161.22)and the 13.7mm ICL(OR:7.08,CI:3.16-15.89)were risk factors for high vaults,whereas less myopic ICLSE(OR:0.85,CI:0.76-0.95)and older age(OR:0.92,CI:0.88-0.98)were protective factors.Conclusion:High CLR and low ICLSE were the major risk factors in eyes presenting low vaults.In the opposite direction,ICL size-ATA was the major contributor for high vaults.This relationship was more critical in higher myopic ICLSE,younger eyes and when 13.7mm ICL were used.The findings show that factors influencing the vault have differentiated weight of influence depending on the type of vault(low,optimal or high).
