Normozoospermic versus teratozoospermic domestic cats： differential testicular volume, sperm morphometry, and subpopulation structure during epididymal maturation

Teratozoospermia （〈40% morphologically normal spermatozoa/ejaculate） is a frequent phenomenon in feline species. This research was carried out to study the possible differences in testicular volume, differential sperm morphometric traits, and potential differences regarding the sperm subpopulational structure during epididymal sperm maturation in teratozoospermic feline donors. Epididymal sperm samples were collected from the caput （R1）, corpus （R2）, and cauda （R3） epididymidis in two donor groups （N： normozoospermic; T： teratozoospermic）. Aliquots were assessed for concentration, viability, motility, and acrosomal integrity. Sperm morphometric descriptors from CASA-Morph analysis were analyzed by the Principal Component Analysis （PCA） and clustering analyses. Irrespective of the group analyzed, PCA revealed two Principal Components （PCs） for each epididymal region explaining more than the 93% of the variance. Surprisingly, the number of subpopulations remained constant in regions R1-R2-R3 irrespective of the donor group analyzed. However, the distribution of these subpopulations was found to be structurally different and strongly influenced by the epididymal region and the donor group. In conclusion, testicular morphometry and the sperm subpopulation structure were different in N and T donors. The alterations in subpopulations during epididymal maturation could be used as a potential clinical indicator of teratozoospermic individuals since an important influence of teratozoospermia on sperm subpopulation structure has been demonstrated.

Background:Meeting the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines(physical activity,screen time,and sleep duration) has been associated with positive health indicators.However,there are no previous meta-analyses that have examined the overall adherence to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines from pre-school to adolescence across the world.Therefore,the main purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the overall(non)adherence to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines among preschoolers,children,and adolescents worldwide.Methods:Four electronic databases(MEDLINE,Scopus,Web of Science,and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) were searched for quantitative studies published in Spanish and English between January 2016 and May 2021.Studies that were conducted with apparently healthy participants and reported the overall(non)adherence to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines in preschoolers and/or children and/or adolescents were included.Results:Sixty-three studies comprising 387,437 individuals(51% girls) aged 3-18 years from 23 countries were included.Overall,7.12%(95%confidence interval(95%CI):6.45%-7.78%) of youth met all three 24-Hour Movement Guidelines,and 19.21%(95%CI:16.73%-21.69%)met none of the 3 recommendations.Concerning sex,adherence to all recommendations was significantly lower in girls(3.75%,95%CI:3.23%-4.27%) than in boys(6.89%,95%CI:5.89%-7.89%)(p <0.001).However,there were no sex differences regarding adherence to any of the 3 individual recommendations(girls,15.66%,95%CI:8.40%-22.92%;boys,12.95%,95%CI:6.57%-19.33%).In terms of age group,adherence to the 3 recommendations was 11.26%(95%CI:8.68%-13.84%),10.31%(95%CI:7.49%-13.12%),and 2.68%(95%CI:1.78%-3.58%) in preschoolers,children,and adolescents,respectively.Conversely,8.81%(95%CI:5.97%-11.64%) of preschoolers,15.57%(95%CI:11.60%-19.54%) of children,and 28.59%(95%CI:22.42%-34.75%) of adolescents did not meet any of the recommendations.South America was the region with the lowest adherence(all:2.93%;none:31.72%).Overall adherence to the 24-Hour Movement

Prevalence of the terrain reversal effect in satellite imagery

The terrain reversal effect is a perceptual phenomenon which causes an illusion in various 3D geographic visualizations where landforms appear inverted,e.***.we perceive valleys as ridges and vice versa.Given that such displays are important for spatio-visual analysis,this illusion can lead to critical mistakes in interpreting the terrain.However,it is currently undocumented how commonly this effect is experienced.In this paper,we study the prevalence of the terrain reversal effect in satellite imagery through a two-stage online user experiment.The experiment was conducted with the participation of a diverse and relatively large population(n=535).Participants were asked to identify landforms(valley or ridge?)or judge a 3D spatial relationship(is A higher than B?).When the images were rotated by 180°,the results were reversed.In a control task with‘illusion-free’original images,people were successful in identifying landforms,yet a very strong illusion occurred when these images were rotated 180°.Our findings demonstrate that the illusion is acutely present;thus,we need a better understanding of the problem and its solutions.Additionally,the results caution us that in an interactive environment where people can rotate the display,we might be introducing a severe perceptual problem.

BACKGROUND Laron syndrome(LS)is an autosomal recessive hereditary condition affecting only 1/1000000 births.The cause is associated with mutations in the growth hormone(GH)receptor(GHR),leading to GH insensitivity.LS patients typically present with severe growth retardation,obesity,and abnormal sexual maturation.Currently,LS diagnosis is performed post-delivery.Therefore,we assessed the efficiency of Pre-implantation Genetic Testing(PGT)coupled with monoplex-polymerase chain reaction(PCR)technology for detecting this monogenic disease in embryos from a couple confirmed as LS heterozygous carriers CASE SUMMARY The couple LS-carriers were confirmed by the presence of a first child born with LS.The couple underwent a standard in vitro fertilization(IVF)protocol.DNA was collected from trophectoderm cells from day 5 embryos.Whole genome amplification(WGA)was performed using a Sureplex DNA Amplification System and analyzed by PCR,targeting the deletion of the exons 5 and 6 in the GHR gene as well as PGT by Next-generation Sequencing(Illumina).Eleven embryos were collected and analyzed.27.3%were the wild type for GHR,45.5%were heterozygotes,and 18.2%homozygous mutants.One embryo yielded no results.Three 2-embryos transfers were performed;2 normal homozygous and four heterozygous carriers were selected for transfer.The first two transfers were unsuccessful,whereas the final transfer with two heterozygous embryos resulted in clinical pregnancy.The genomic composition of the fetus was verified,applying the same techniques using amniocytes,extracted after 21 wk of the ongoing pregnancy.The fetus was confirmed as GHR deletion in exon 5-6,carrier.A non-affected baby was born.CONCLUSION Here,we present a case demonstrating that using WGA as a template in addition to PCR targeting specific gene regions,exons 5 and 6 on the GHR gene,could identify LS carrier embryos.This provides evidence that WGA and PCR serve as an excellent tool to detect this specific monogenic disease in IVF embryos,thus allowing selection of candidate embr

The Valencian Community(eastern Spain) was the pioneer territory establishing plant micro-reserves(PMRs). Its model to protect small sites for endemic and endangered plants has been exported to several countries around the globe. This paper highlights 1) the role of PMRs to complement the protection provided by large protected areas, 2) how the establishment of PMRs fosters the increase of floristic knowledge, and 3)the fact that continuous monitoring of PMRs also yields new records of endangered species found within the same PMRs. The flexibility of the PMR approach-it can be adapted to other national and regional legislationsallows its transfer to other rich-biodiversity regions and countries such as China.

Disaster forensic approaches aim to identify the causes of disasters to support disaster risk management.However,few studies have conducted a systematic literature review of scientific articles that labeled themselves as a forensic approach to disasters.This article provides a qualitative analysis of these forensic studies,focusing on five main issues:(1)the methodologies applied;(2)the forensic approaches used in the disaster risk management phases;(3)the hazards addressed;(4)if the methodologies involve social participation,and using what types of participation;and(5)if there are references to urban planning in the scientific studies analyzed.Our results showed a predominance of the Forensic Investigations of Disasters(FORIN)and Post-Event Review Capability(PERC)methodologies used in isolation or combination.There is a need for methodologies that engage people in participatory FORIN,fostering the co-production of knowledge and action research approaches.

Thermo-electro-mechanical microstructural interdependences in conductive thermoplastics

Additive manufacturing has enabled the design of thermoplastic components that provide structural support,electrical conductivity and heat generation modulated by mechanical deformation.The mechanisms and interplays that govern the material response at the microstructural level remain,however,elusive.Here,we develop an experimental method to characterise conductive filaments from a combined mechanical,electrical and thermal perspective.This approach is used to unravel exciting material interplays of conductive polylactic acid.To overcome experimental limitations that prevent a complete microstructural analysis of the problem,we develop a full-field homogenisation framework and implement it for finite elements.The framework accounts for viscoplasticity,electrical and thermal conduction,convection and heat generation via Joule effect,as well as for the interdependences between them.After experimental validation,the framework is applied to virtually optimise fabrication requirements to obtain desired properties in final products,i.e.,stiffer products,filaments with higher conductivities or with better sensing capabilities.

The present research reports the insulating multilayer complex based on basalt fiber and Phase Change Materials, under destructive testing and flashover conditions. Flammability and toxicity of phase change materials are discussed from molecular point of view. Single layer, basalt and fiber glass and Multilayer complex incorporated with phase change materials were study. Multilayer complex were constructed mainly by three layers with a felted punch incorporated PCMs. Differential Scanning Calorimeter （DSC）, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared （FTIR）, Thermogravimetric Analysis （TGA）, Air Permeability, and Flame Protective Performance Analysis （FPPAS） which is Donghua University Intellectual property was carried out in flashover condition （900-1000℃） according to NFPA standards. Destructive tests reveal that multilayer complex based in Basalt fiber mainly with incorporated with Phase Change Materials offer better thermal insulation to the firefighter for at least4.55minutes in flashover conditions （900-1000℃） until reach the second degree of skin burn （44℃）. Differential Scanning Calorimeter and Thermogravimetric Analysis show that the best candidates for thermal insulation materials at this temperature due to the heat storage material are Dulcitol and D-Mannitol. The Air Permeability test to optimize the number of thermal batting layers also was studied, and it was found no linear relationship between number of layers and air permeability, and the optimal number was two thermal batting, for the balance of thermal insulation and heat stress. As a conclusion it said the multilayer complex based in the basalt fiber incorporated with phase change materials significant improvement was observed for the thermal insulation for firefighters, in front of the flashover environment, the PCMs has a key role in the insulation to keep the temperature constant in the sample.
