Background:Metabolomic approaches,which include the study of low molecular weight molecules,are an emerging-omics technology useful for identification of *** this field,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy has already been used to uncover(in)fertility biomarkers in the seminal plasma(SP)of several mammalian ***,NMR studies profiling the porcine SP metabolome to uncover in vivo fertility biomarkers are yet to be carried ***,this study aimed to evaluate the putative relationship between SPmetabolites and in vivo fertility *** this end,24 entire ejaculates(three ejaculates per boar)were collected from artificial insemination(AI)-boars throughout a year(one ejaculate every 4 months).Immediately after collection,ejaculates were centrifuged to obtain SP-samples,which were stored for subsequent metabolomic analysis by NMR *** outcomes from 1525 inseminations were recorded over a year,including farrowing rate,litter size,stillbirths per litter and the duration of ***:A total of 24 metabolites were identified and quantified in all *** operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis showed that lactate levels in SP had discriminative capacity for farrowing rate(area under the curve[AUC]=0.764)while carnitine(AUC=0.847),hypotaurine(AUC=0.819),sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(AUC=0.833),glutamate(AUC=0.799)and glucose(AUC=0.750)showed it for litter ***,citrate(AUC=0.743),creatine(AUC=0.812),phenylalanine(AUC=0.750),tyrosine(AUC=0.753)and malonate(AUC=0.868)levels had discriminative capacity for stillbirths per litter;and malonate(AUC=0.767)and fumarate(AUC=0.868)levels for gestation ***:The assessment of selected SP-metabolites in ejaculates through NMR spectroscopy could be considered as a promising non-invasive tool to predict in vivo fertility outcomes in ***,supplementing AI-doses with specific metabolites should also be envisaged as a way to improve their f

Competitive Learning Approach to GIS Based Land Use Suitability Analysis

This paper uses the expected utility under risk hypothesis to develop a new approach to GIS modeling for land use suitability analysis with competitive learning algorithms （CLG-LUSA）. It uses Kohonen＇s Self Organ- ized Maps （SOM） and Linear Vector Quantization （LVQ） among other tools to create comprehensive ordering of high number of options. The model uses decision makers preferred locations and environmental data to construct a manifold of the decision＇s attribute space. Then, decision and uncertainty maps are derived from this manifold. An application example is provided using the selection of suitable environments for coconut development in a mu- nicipality of Cuba. CLG-LUSA model was able to provide accurate visual feedback of key aspects of the decision process, making the methodology suitable for personal or group decision making.

Long-Term Persistence of Propeller and Anchor Damage to Seagrass Canopy and Demersal Biodiversity in Puerto Rico

Seagrass ecosystems support high biodiversity and productivity and constitute critical links to adjacent ecosystems. However, there is a growing concern that increasing recreational navigation may affect its ecological processes and functions, which may affect its recreational and tourism values, compromising local economies and livelihoods. The long-term impacts (1996-2011) of recreational navigation on seagrass benthic community structure were assessed by addressing the question of whether long-term effects of recreational navigation had a significant impact on seagrass community structure and on its benthic faunal assemblages. Findings evidenced: 1) a consistent spatio-temporal gradient in the ecological conditions of seagrasses across the scoured areas, with increased percent seagrass cover, density and canopy height, and seagrass benthic biodiversity with increasing distance from disturbed areas;2) a decline in percent seagrass cover, and an increased macroalgal and cyanobacterial percent cover through time around the disturbed areas;3) a significant shift in seagrass assemblage biodiversity as a response to boating that followed the intermediate disturbance hypothesis;4) an adverse effect on the spatial distribution and survival of multiple benthic invertebrate taxa;and 5) a significant decline in cnidarians, echinoids, ophiuroids, holothurians, and gastropods, and an increase in polychaetes, platyhelminths, and hermit crabs, particularly in areas exposed to boating. Spatio-temporal variation in seagrass community structure explained the observed variation in benthic faunal assemblages. The long-term consequences on ecosystem functions and management needs are discussed to foster the conservation of seagrasses.

Therapies such as direct tension-free microsurgical repair or transplantation of a nerve autograft,are nowadays used to treat traumatic peripheral nerve injuries（PNI）,focused on the enhancement of the intrinsic regenerative potential of injured ***,these therapies fail to recreate the suitable cellular and molecular microenvironment of peripheral nerve repair and in some cases,the functional recovery of nerve injuries is ***,new biomedical engineering strategies based on tissue engineering approaches through molecular intervention and scaffolding offer promising outcomes on the *** this sense,evidence is accumulating in both,preclinical and clinical settings,indicating that platelet-rich plasma products,and fibrin scaffold obtained from this technology,hold an important therapeutic potential as a neuroprotective,neurogenic and neuroinflammatory therapeutic modulator system,as well as enhancing the sensory and motor functional nerve muscle unit recovery.

Land cover changes and fragmentation in mountain neotropical ecosystems of Oaxaca, Mexico under community forest management

Changes in land cover have a direct impact on forest ecosystem goods and services. In this study, changes in land cover in Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca ecosystems were estimated using a consistent processing of Landsat images and OBIA methodology. Additionally, landscape analyses using FRAGSTAT were conducted. In 2014, Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca was covered by approximately 84% of forests, mainly pine-oak and cloud forests. After extensive deforestation until 2001, this trend was reversed and the forest cover surface area in 2014 was slightly higher than in 1979. The comparison of the landscape structure of the forested and agricultural lands suggests an increase in habitat heterogeneity. However, interspersion and juxtaposition indices, showing the patch shape by patch area and perimeter, were similar throughout the study period(1979–2014). Social and economic drivers can explain this situation: namely, community organization, forest enterprises, payment for ecosystem services programs, and changes of agricultural activity. Communities in the Sierra of Oaxaca have reforested degraded lands, created community forest enterprises, and preserved the forest under conservation schemes like those proposed by the Mexican payment for ecosystem services programs. However, their sustainable management faces internal challenges and has become highly dependent on political and institutional decisions beyond their control.

Background:Aquaporins(AQPs)are a family of transmembrane water channels that includes orthodox AQPs,aquaglyceroporins(GLPs)and super ***3,AQP7,AQP9 and AQP11 have been identified in boar sperm,and they are crucial for sperm maturation and *** exchange is an important event in cryopreservation,which is the most efficient method for long-term storage of ***,the freezethaw process leads to sperm damage and a loss of fertilizing *** that the quality of frozenthawed sperm partially depends on the regulation of osmolality variations during this process,AQPs might play a crucial role in boar semen *** this context,the aim of this study was to unravel the functional relevance of the different groups of AQPs for boar sperm cryotolerance through three different ***:Inhibition of different groups of AQPs was found to have different effects on boar sperm *** the use of 1,3-propanediol(PDO),an inhibitor of orthodox AQPs and GLPs,decreased total motility(P<0.05),it increased post-thaw sperm viability,lowered membrane lipid disorder and increased mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP)(P<0.05).When acetazolamide(AC)was used as an inhibitor of orthodox AQPs,the effects on post-thaw sperm quality were restricted to a mild increase in MMP in the presence of the intermediate concentration at 30 min post-thaw and an increase in superoxide levels(P<0.05).Finally,the addition of phloretin(PHL),a GLP inhibitor,had detrimental effects on post-thaw total and progressive sperm motilities,viability and lipid membrane disorder(P<0.05).Conclusions:The effects of the different inhibitors suggest that GLPs rather than orthodox AQPs are relevant for boar sperm ***,the positive effect of PDO on sperm quality suggests a cryoprotective role for this molecule.

3D Thermo-Fluid Dynamic Simulations of High-Speed-Extruded Starch Based Products

This paper aims to investigate a method to perform non-isothermal flow simulations in a complex geometry for generalised Newtonian fluids. For this purpose, 3D numerical simulations of starch based products are performed. The geometry of a co-rotating twin-screw extruder is considered. Process conditions concern high rotational speed (up to 1800 rpm), different flow rates (30, 40 and 60 kg/h) and water contents (22% and 36%), for a total of 54 simulations. To cope with the geometry complexity a Mesh Superposition Technique (MST) was adopted. The pseudoplastic behaviour of the fluid is taken into account by considering viscosity as function of shear rate (Ostwaldde Waele relationship) and temperature (Arrhenius law). Simulated temperature variations are compared with measurements at same process conditions for validation. Qualitative behaviour of temperature T and shear stress ?along the screw are analysed and comparisons of different process conditions are presented. By these simulations a database is formed to develop a process control strategy for novel extruder operating points in food technology.

Contrasting effects of N fertilization and mowing on ecosystem multifunctionality in a meadow steppe

There is little experimental field evidence on how multiple essential land use intensification drivers(LUIDs),such as nitrogen(N)fertilization and mowing,interact to control ecosystem ***,we conducted a 4-year field experiment in a meadow steppe in northeast China and evaluated the direct and indirect effects of mowing and N fertilization on a range of ecosystemfunctions associated with nutrient cycle,carbon stocks,and organic matter decomposition during the past 2 years of the experiment(2017 and 2018).Mowing had negative effects on the ecosystem multifunctionality index(EMF),carbon(C)cycle multifunctionality index(CCMF),and N cycle multifunctionality index(NCMF)in 2 years of ***,in general,the responses of multifunctionality to N fertilization were ratespecific and year-dependent.N fertilization had positive effects on EMF,CCMF,NCMF,and phosphorus(P)cycle multifunctionality index(PCMF)in 2017,with the higher precipitation rate during the growing season,which was likely associated with the strong monsoon ***,in 2018,EMF,CCMF,and NCMF increased at the lower N fertilization levels(£10 g N m^(-2) yr^(-1)),but decreased at higher N rates.N fertilization had consistent positive effects on PCMF in the 2 years of *** effects of land use drivers on multifunctionality were indirectly influenced by bacterial biomass,plant richness,and soil moisture *** results also indicated that the impacts of land use drivers on multifunctionality played an important role in maintaining a range of functions at low levels of functioning(<50% functional threshold).Low N fertilization levels(£10 g N m^(-2) yr^(-1))were able to reduce the negative effects of mowing on ecosystem multifunctionality while promoting plant biomass(food for livestock)and C *** findings are useful for designing practical strategies toward promoting multifunctionality by managing multiple LUIDs in a meadow steppe.

In this paper,we analyse an analytical solution of the Einstein–Maxwell field equations that considers matter with anisotropic pressures in a static and spherically symmetric *** report the manner in which we obtained the solution,which is by means of the Karmarkar *** the model,we assume a state equation that describes the interaction of matter from quarks P=(c^(2)ρ-4B_(g))/3 and we consider the presence of electric charge,which can generate that the radial and tangential pressures are not *** a graphic manner,we analyse the physical properties of the model,taking as the observational data those of mass 1M⊙and radius7.69 km which were reported for the star Her *** charge values are found between 5.57×10^(18)C≤Q≤1.31×10^(20)C and the interval of the Bag constant Bg∈[118.7,122.13]MeV/fm^(3).Also,we show the stability of the configuration by means of the static stability criteria of Harrison–Zeldovich–Novikov((?M)/?ρc>0),as well as in regards to infinitesimal radial adiabatic perturbation,since the adiabatic indexγ>3.3 which guarantees the stability of the solution.

Numerical Simulation of Foaming Processes

The literature model studied in this article describes bubble formation and growth in a highly viscous polymer liquid with support of a gaseous matter dispersed under pressure before foaming. The foam growth is induced by the application of vacuum and mass transport of volatile components dissolved in the polymer liquid. Based on this literature model, aeration processes are calculated for intermediate viscosity and low viscosity biological systems, as they are of interest for biomatter foams, in particular for food foams in industrial processes. At the end of this article, the numerical results are presented and discussed.
