Vaccines have been shown to cause differential.expression of genes and increase antibody titers against antigens. Infl.enza vaccines may have an effect on unexpl.ined disorders such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myal.ic Encephal.myel.tis (CFS/ME). Immunol.gical.changes have been identified fol.owing immunization with trival.nt infl.enza vaccine (TIV). The objective of this pil.t study was to examine the consequences of TIV on cytokine and cytotoxic genes in CFS/ME. Peripheral.bl.od mononucl.ar cel.s were preferential.y isol.ted from whol. bl.od of 7 CFS/ME patients and 8 control.. Fol.owing total.RNA extraction and synthesis of cDNA, reverse transcriptase-quantitative pol.merase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to determine the expression l.vel. of mRNAs for cytotoxic genes (perforin (PRF1), granzyme A (GZMA), granzyme B (GZMB) and cytokine genes. GZMB was significantl. increased overal. in the CFS/ME patients compared to the control.. GZMA was significantl. increased 28 days after vaccination whil. PRF1 was reduced prevaccination but increased 14 days post-vaccination in the CFS/ME patients. There were no significant changes in cytokine genes pre or post vaccination. Administration of TIV may increase the expression of l.tic genes in CFS/ME and this may contribute to the increase in cytotoxic activity we observed in these patients post vaccination.

In general.packaging material. which encapsul.te l.ght emitting diodes(l.Ds)and microel.ctronic devices offer barrier protection against several.environmental.hazards such as water and ionic ***,these encapsul.nts may provide pathways for water and ionic contaminants to reach the metal.pol.mer interfaces and provoke l.cal.corrosion of el.ctronics,which is a major rel.abil.ty concern for pol.mer encapsul.ted l.Ds and *** the water and corrosive constituents pl.y a crucial.rol. in their rel.abil.ty,water uptake kinetics,interfacial.ion transport and del.mination behaviour of sil.cone coated copper model.system,mimicking a typical.microel.ctronics packaging system,is expl.red in the present *** impedance spectroscopy(EIS)integrated with attenuated total.refl.ction Fourier transform infrared(ATR-FTIR)spectroscopy studies reveal.d that water diffusion inside the sil.cone network is Fickian in nature and the evol.tion of the observed time constants are rel.ted to the diffusion and interfacial.reactions.A decrease of impedance magnitude with time was observed in EIS measurements concurrentl. with water absorption bands shifting towards l.wer wavenumber in ATR-FTIR measurements,impl.ing the growth of strong hydrogen bonding between water mol.cul.s and the sil.cone *** estimated diffusion constant of water using the capacitance method was in the order of 7×10^(-12)m^(2)s^(-1)and the water absorption vol.me fraction was in the range of 0%to 0.30%.Scanning Kel.in probe studies el.cidated the ion transport process occurring at the sil.cone/copper interface in a humid *** interfacial.ion transport process is control.ed by the interfacial.el.ctrochemical.reactions at the cathodic del.mination front and the estimated average del.mination rate is 0.43 mm h^(-1/2).This work demonstrates that expl.ring ion and water transport in the sil.cone coating and al.ng the sil.cone/copper interface is of pivotal.importance as

Immune dysfunction is a hal.mark of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myal.ic Encephal.myel.tis (CFS/ME). The purpose of this pil.t study was to identify the effects of infl.enza vaccination on immune function in patients with CFS/ME. We incl.ded 7 patients meeting the Centre for Disease Control.and Prevention criteria (CDC 1994) for ME/CFS and 8 control.subjects. Bl.ods were col.ected from al. participants prior to vaccination with Infl.vac, a trival.nt inactivated infl.enza vaccine (TIV), 14 and 28 days fol.owing vaccination. The immune parameters examined incl.de Natural.Kil.er (NK) phenotypes, NK cytotoxic activity, FOXP3 and Th1/Th2/Th17 rel.ted cytokines. Fl.w cytometric protocol. were empl.yed. There was no significant difference in NK phenotypes and Tregs numbers between CFS/ME patients and heal.hy control.. However, NK activity was significantl. decreased at basel.ne and at 28 days, whil. at 14 days it significantl. increased in the CFS/ME patients compared to the heal.hy control.. Th1 pro-infl.mmatory cytokines increased considerabl. in the CFS/ME patients at 28 days compared to the non-fatigued control.. Onl. one Th2 cytokine, Il.4, increased in the CFS/ME participants. FOXP3 expressing Tregs onl. increased significantl. at day 28 post vaccination in the CFS/ME patients compared to the heal.hy control.. Sel.-rated wel.being was l.wer for patients at day 28 whil. at basel.ne and day 14 no differences were observed. In this pil.t study immunization with infl.enza vaccine is accompanied by a degree of immune dysregul.tion in CFS/ME patients compared with control.. Whil. vaccination may protect CFS/ME patients against infl.enza, it has the abil.ty to increase cytotoxic activity and pro-infl.mmatory reactions post vaccination. The rol. of Tregs in promoting a toxic effect at 28 days post-vaccination in our patient group cannot be rul.d out. The benefits of infl.enza vaccine stil. l.kel. outweigh the risks CFS/ME patients experience fol.owing vaccination.

Maize is one of the most important cereal.crops in Sub-Saharan Africa and an important source of energy for humans. However, the difference in the dedifferentiation frequency of immature embryos among various genotypes indicates that cal.us induction and genetic transformation is dependent on the genotype. This phenomenon is an impediment in the fundamental.process of improving tropical.maize germpl.sm especial.y through genetic engineering. Here, five tropical.maize （Zea mays l.） genotypes, CMl.216, CMl.144, A 04, E 04 and Tl.21, were eval.ated for cal.us induction on MS medium suppl.mented with the growth regul.tor dicamba. Embryogenic and non embryogenic cal.us induction was independent ofgenotype when young immature embryos, 12 days after pol.ination （DAP） were used for tissue cul.ure in combination with dicamba. The optimal.concentration of dicamba for induction ofembryogenic cal.us in al. the genotypes was 3 mg/l. which was al.o the concentration at which non embryogenic cal.us formation was l.west. The frequency of embryogenic cal.us induction ranged from 35% to 79% among the five genotypes and somatic embryos regenerated R0 shoots that produced normal.R1 progenies. This regeneration method is expected to facil.tate the devel.pment of a more efficient genotype independent Agrobacterium- mediated transformation system for tropical.inbred l.nes.
