Phosphorus Recovery from Carbonized Sewage Sludge by Hydrothermal Processes

Sewage sludge contains significant amounts of phosphorus, however, the best recovery method for them is not established. In order to establish the phosphorus recovery technique, investigation of phosphorus recovery from carbonized sewage sludge was investigated. Carbonized sewage sludge was mixed with a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution, and treated in hydrothermal conditionsfor2 to 6 hours. After this treatment, hot-water was added to the treated mixture, and phosphorus containing extract was recovered. Phosphorus was recovered as a form of sodium phosphate from phosphorus containing extract. Optimal recovery conditions were investigated in treatment temperature, amount of added NaOH and Solid- Liquid ratio of the charcoal and aq. NaOH solution. The recovered phosphorus was confirmed as sodium phosphate (Na3PO4), and its recovering rate was estimated to be about 58%-71%.

In order to establish a phosphorus recovery method, some phosphorus recovery methods from incinerated ash of sewage sludge were investigated. The phosphorus which is recovered from ash with acidic treatment, is mainly composed of aluminum phosphate. In order to remove aluminum component from aluminum phosphate, alum formation processes was investigated. The phosphorus extracted from ash was mixed with ammonium sulfate in existence of sulfuric acid, and formed alum (aluminum ammonium sulfate), and was separated by crystallization. The phosphorus which had aluminum removed, was recovered by addition of ammonium hydroxide. The recovered phosphorus was considered ammonium phosphate by X-ray analysis and XRD.

Advanced liver cirrhosis is usually accompanied by portal hypertension. Long-term portal hypertension results in various vascular alterations. The systemic hemodynamic state in patients with cirrhosis is termed a hyperdynamic state. This peculiar hemodynamic state is characterized by an expanded blood volume, high cardiac output, and low total peripheral resistance. Vascular alterations do not disappear even long after liver transplantation(LT), and recipients with cirrhosis exhibit a persistent systemic hyperdynamic state even after LT. Stability of optimal systemic hemodynamics is indispensable for adequate portal venous flow(PVF) and successful LT, and reliable parameters for optimal systemic hemodynamics and adequate PVF are required. Even a subtle disorder in systemic hemodynamics is precisely indicated by the balance between cardiac output and blood volume. The indocyanine green(ICG) kinetics reflect the patient's functional hepatocytes and effective PVF, and PVF is a major determinant of the ICG elimination constant(kICG) in the well-preserved allograft. The kICG value is useful to set the optimal PVF during living-donor LT and to evaluate adequate PVF after LT. Perioperative management has a large influence on the postoperative course and outcome; therefore, key points and unexpected pitfalls for intensive management are herein summarized. Transplant physicians should fully understand the peculiar systemic hemodynamic behavior in LT recipients with cirrhosis and recognize the critical importance of PVF after LT.

The objective of this study was to determine the relation between left ventricular(LV) systolic function and the ratio of preceding(RR1) to prepreceding(RR2) R-R intervals in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation(AF) and dilated cardiomyopathy. LV systolic function(Emax)was examined using a conductance catheter with a micromanometer in 13 patients with chronic AF and dilated cardiomyopathy. We calculated Emax as a load-indepen- dent index of LV contractility and compared it with RR1, RR2, and the ratio of RR1/RR2. We analyzed 50± 13 cardiac cycles(range 18-61) in each patient. Average heart rate was 80± 13 beats/min, and ejection fraction over all cardiac cycle in each patient measured by conductance catheter was 31± 8% . Emax was positively correlated with RR1 and RR1/RR2 in all patients, and negatively correlated with RR2 in all patients. In each patient, correlation coefficients of Emax with RR1/RR2 were greater than those with either RR1 or RR2. Furthermore, Emax at RR1/RR2=1 in the linear regression line reflected average Emax over all cardiac cycles in each patient. In conclusion, we have shown that LV contractility correlated positively with RR1/RR2 in patients with chronic AF and dilated cardiomyopathy, and LV contractility at RR1/RR2=1 represents the average value of contractility over all cardiac cycles.
