The rain shadow regions requisite a comprehensive watershed development and management plan for sustainable water resources management. The Pambar River Basin （PRB） lies on the rain shadow region of the southern Western Ghats, India, where climate showed marked intra-basin variation. A morphometric analysis was done to evaluate the drainage characteristics of PRB using topographical maps and digital elevation data. PRB was divided into eighteen 4th order basins （SB1-SB18）, distributed along various climatic gradients. Lower order streams mostly dominate PRB and drainage pattern is a function of relief and structure. The terrain is highly dissected and prone to soil erosion during heavy storms and the elongated shape of PRB enables easier flood management. The influence of climate on drainage characteristics was evidently emphasized in basin morphometry. Four distinctively different classes were identified based on the morphometric similarities. The significance of morphometric analysis on the hydrological characterization is discussed and the relevance of the present study in water harvesting has been explicated.

In February 2007,a 41-year-old Japanese male was admitted to our hospital with increasing upper abdominal pain.A contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)scan of the abdomen demonstrated a well-demarcated,hypodense cystic mass with a thickened wall in the mesocolon.The laboratory results were within normal limits,except for increased carcinoembryonic antigen,carbohydrate antigen 19-9,DUPAN-2 and SPAN-1.The patient was diagnosed as having a mesenteric malignant cyst,and during a laparotomy,a right hemicolectomy with mesenteric cystectomy was performed without rupture in March 2007.In the microscopic findings,there was a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in the inner surface of the cyst and in the fibrous connective tissue of the hypertrophic cystic wall.The tumor cells were immunohistochemically reactive to cytokeratin(CK)7,CK18 and CK20.No remnant of the malignancy was detected in the resected margin of the colon,cyst,liver or peritoneum nor was an uptake detected in an 18[F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT examination of other organs.Finally,the malignancy was concluded to be a serous cystadenocarcinoma of the mesentery.Nineteen months after the operation,the patient died from peritonitis carcinomatosa due to a small intestine rupture.This report suggests mesenteric cystadenocarcinomas originating in the ovary,oviduct and intestinal mucosa,but these were ruled out in our patient.In this report,we discuss a case of the malignant transformation of a cyst into adenocarcinoma,which to our knowledge has never been previously reported in a male patient.

以‘北醇’葡萄两性花、‘1613C’葡萄雄花和‘520A’葡萄雌花为材料,测定始蕾期、大蕾期和盛花期花器官的激素含量并进行转录组测序。各激素在不同性别花中的积累量不同,同一性别花器官不同发育时期激素含量也有差异,在大蕾期雌花中IAA、ABA、MeJA含量最高。转录和代谢联合分析共获得31965个表达基因,其中与花发育直接相关的基因1535个,部分基因持续上调或下调,持续上调的基因主要参与苯丙烷合成、植物激素信号转导等通路,持续下调基因主要参与淀粉和糖代谢、氨基酸合成等通路。AP1、SEP1、AG2、SOC1等MADS-box基因在不同花器官和不同发育时期差异表达。MADS-box基因、开花诱导整合子基因及解毒和应激相关基因的差异表达对花性别分化具有重要作用。

Simulation of Needle-Type Corona Electrodes by the Finite Element Method

This paper describes a software tool, called LEVSOFT, suitable for the electric field simulations of corona electrodes by the Finite Element Method （FEM）. Special attention was paid to the user friendly construction of geometries with corners and sharp points, and to the fast generation of highly refined triangular meshes and field maps. The execution of selfadaptive meshes was also implemented. These customized features make the code attractive for the simulation of needle-type corona electrodes. Some case examples involving needle type electrodes are presented.

Down-regulation of p73 correlates with high histological grade in Japanese with breast carcinomas

Background p73, a homologue of p53, has been located at chromosome lp36-33, a region of frequently observed loss of heterozygosity in breast cancers. The objective of the present study was to investigate the function of p73 in Japanese with breast cancers. Methods Sixty Japanese patients with breast cancer were assessed by polymerase chain reaction single strand confirmation polymorphism analysis and direct sequencing to detect the p73 allele, p73 mRNA levels were also determined in 40 out of 60 patients by reverse-transcriptional polymerase chain reaction. Results We analyzed the entire open reading frame of the p73 gene by polymerase chain reaction single strand confirmation polymorphism and sequencing, and failed to identify any mutations of p73 in the encoding regions detected. Loss of heterozygosity of p73 was infrequent and only found in 9% of breast carcinomas. We revealed a few polymorphisms with a frequency of 13%-29%, which had been reported previously. Down-regulation of p73 mRNA expression was observed in tumor tissues in comparison to the normal breast tissues. A significant inverse correlation was found between p73 transcripts and high histological grade, suggesting that down-regulated p73 expression could be related to poor prognosis in those patients. Conclusion Our results suggest that p73 may serve as a tumor suppressor gene and its expression plays a role in tumorigenesis in Japanese patients with breast cancer.

Silicon(Si) is known as a beneficial nutrient in the cultivation of rice, playing a key role in photosynthesis enhancement, lodging resistance and tolerance to various environmental stress. The present study aimed to examine available Si content in both lowland soils(n = 29) and neighboring upland soils(n = 21) collected from Benin and Nigeria and to evaluate the validity of the assessment results through a pot experiment. Our results revealed that the acetate-buffer method predicted Si concentration in rice straw at the harvest stage(R^2 = 0.68, P 0.05), and 76% of the uplands and 38% of the lowlands were deficient(< 50 mg/kg) in acetate-buffer soluble Si. These findings suggest that the Si-deficiency soils prevail across the study area, making rice plants starved for Si and prone to environmental stress.

The oxidation behavior of two Ferritic/Martensitic(F/M)steels including novel SIMP steel and commercial P91 steel were investigated by exposure to flowing deaerated supercritical water(SCW)at 700℃for up to 1000 h.The kinetic weight gain curves follow parabolic and near-cubic rate equations for SIMP and P91 steels,respectively.X-Ray Diffraction analysis showed the presence of magnetite and a spinel phase in flowing SCW for both steels.The morphology and structure of the oxide scales formed on these two steels were analyzed.The relationship between the microstructure and oxidation behavior and the reason that SIMP steel showed better oxidation resistance than P91 steel were discussed.

AIM: To investigate whether semi-vegetarian diet (SVD) has a preventive effect against relapse of Crohn’s disease (CD) in patients who have achieved remission,who are a high-risk group for relapse.METHODS: A prospective,single center,2-year clinical trial was conducted.Twenty-two adult CD patients who achieved clinical remission either medically (n = 17) or surgically (n = 5) and consumed an SVD during hospitalization were advised to continue with an SVD and avoid known high-risk foods for inflammatory bowel disease.The primary endpoint was clinical relapse defi ned as the appearance of active symptoms of CD.Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to calculate the cumulative proportion of patients who had a relapse.A 2-year analysis of relapse rates of patients who followed an SVD and those who did not (an omnivorous diet group) was undertaken.RESULTS: SVD was continued by 16 patients (compliance 73%).Remission was maintained in 15 of 16 patients (94%) in the SVD group vs two of six (33%)in the omnivorous group.Remission rate with SVD was 100% at 1 year and 92% at 2 years.SVD showed signif icant prevention in the time to relapse compared to that in the omnivorous group (P = 0.0003,log rank test).The concentration of C-reactive protein was normal at the f inal visit in more than half of the patients in remission who were taking an SVD,who maintained remission during the study (9/15;60%),who terminated follow-up (8/12;67%),and who completed 2 years follow-up (7/10;70%).There was no untoward effect of SVD.CONCLUSION: SVD was highly effective in preventing relapse in CD.

Quantum dots are ideally suited for color conversion in light emitting diodes owing to their spectral tunability,high conversion efficiency and narrow emission bands.These properties are particularly important for display backlights;the highly saturated colors generated by quantum dots justify their higher production cost.Here,we demonstrate the benefits of a hybrid remote phosphor approach that combines a green-emitting europium-doped phosphor with red-emitting CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots.Different stacking geometries,including mixed and separate layers of both materials,are studied at the macroscopic and microscopic levels to identify the configuration that achieves maximum device efficiency while minimizing material usage.The influence of reabsorption,optical outcoupling and refractive index-matching between the layers is evaluated in detail with respect to device efficiency and cost.From the findings of this study,general guidelines are derived to optimize both the cost and efficiency of CdSe/CdS and other(potentially cadmium-free)quantum dot systems.When reabsorption of the green and/or red emission is significant compared to the absorption strength for the blue emission of the pumping light emitting diode,the hybrid remote phosphor approach becomes beneficial.

Aspirin-induced small bowel injuries and the preventive effect of rebamipide

AIM:To evaluate the influence of taking low-dose aspirin for 4 wk on small intestinal complications and to examine the preventive effect of rebamipide.METHODS:This study was conducted as a single-center,randomized,double-blind,cross-over,placebo-controlled study.Eleven healthy male subjects were enrolled.Each subject underwent video capsule endos-copy after 1 and 4 wk of taking aspirin and omepra-zole,along with either rebamipide or placebo therapy.The primary endpoint was to evaluate small bowel damage in healthy subjects before and after taking low-dose aspirin for 4 wk.RESULTS:The number of subjects with mucosal breaks(defined as multiple erosions and/or ulcers)were 1 at 1 wk and 1 at 4 wk on the jejunum,and 6 at 1 wk(P = 0.0061)and 7 at 4 wk on the ileum(P =0.0019).Rebamipide significantly prevented mucosal breaks on the ileum compared with the placebo group(P = 0.0173 at 1 wk and P = 0.0266 at 4 wk).CONCLUSION:Longer-term,low-dose aspirin adminis-tration induced damage in the small bowel.Rebamipide prevented this damage,and may be a candidate drug for treating aspirin-induced small bowel complications.
