Flipped classroom approach to global outreach:cross-cultural teaching of horizontal strabismus to Chinese ophthalmology residents

AIM:to evaluate the flipped classroom model for teaching horizontal strabismus didactics in an ophthalmology residency program in China as part of a visiting professorship from the United ***:Residents from an ophthalmology residency program in China were invited to participate in flipped classroom sessions taught by an experienced American ophthalmology faculty in *** were instructed to watch a pre-class video lecture prior to the in-class-casebased *** tests(5 Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program style questions)and surveys were administered before and after the classroom sessions(100%response rate).these results were compared to that of an American cohort who were taught the same ***:the Chinese cohort of 12 residents preferred the flipped classroom to the traditional classroom at higher rates than the American cohort of 40 residents(92%vs 55%,P=0.04)and felt that all ophthalmology topics would be appropriate for the flipped classroom teaching style(P-values between 0.008 andth Chinese and American cohorts,we found that the exotropia curriculum saw a small but significant improvement in performance following the flipped classroom session(P=0.025 for Chinese residents;P=0.001 for US residents),whereas scores in both groups for the esotropia course did not significantly ***:this is the first study to evaluate the flipped classroom model implemented by a visiting ophthalmology professor in a global outreach *** flipped classroom sessions are viewed favorably by the Chinese residents relative to the US cohort with a modest impact on *** in-person interpreter requirement and increased student engagement make this model valuable in cross-cultural visiting professorship ***,the flipped classroom may lend itself well to a virtual format to prevent the transmission of COVID-19,although such a format requires further study.

AIM:to understand retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)screening and treatment preferences among Chinese ***:A Chinese language survey was administered anonymously using Web Q(Catalyst,Seattle,WA,USA)among Chinese ROP screeners from December 2016 to January ***:Among 70 ophthalmologists contacted,65 responded(93%;78%female,mean age 40 y,57%pediatric ophthalmologists and 25%retina specialists).Most used screening criteria of birth weight≤2 kg(62%)with variation in cut-off gestational age(≤37 wk,34%;≤34 wk,22%;≤32 wk,31%).Ret Cam(Natus Medical Incorporated,Pleasanton,CA,USA)wide-field fundus photography assisted most screeners(72%)and was exclusively used by many(29%).Among 55 ophthalmologists treating ROP,anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)was preferred over laser for both zoneⅠ(76%vs 24%)and zoneⅡROP(58%vs 42%).Retina specialists(P=0.004)and ophthalmologists with>3 mo of training(P=0.03)were more likely to use antiVEGF over laser for zoneⅠ*** of laser training(8/20,40%),access(6/20,30%)and anesthesia(4/20,20%)were common barriers to laser ***:Chinese ROP screeners favor antiVEGF injection and Ret Cam imaging for ROP management.A better understanding of ROP screening and treatment informs future research and education efforts in China.

Mandibular advancement devices(MADs)are widely used treatments for obstructive sleep *** function by advancing the lower jaw to open the upper *** increase patient comfort,most patients allow the mouth to be ***,not all systems maintain the lower jaw in a forward position during mouth opening,which results in the production of a retrusion that favors the collapse of the upper ***,the kinematic behavior of the mechanism formed by the mandible-device assembly depends on jaw *** means that,during mouth opening,some devices cause lower jaw protrusion in some patients,but cause its retraction in *** this study,we report the behavior of well-known devices currently on *** do so,we developed a kinematic model of the lower jawdevice *** validated for all devices analyzed using a high-resolution camera *** results show that some of the devices analyzed here did not produce the correct behavior during patient mouth opening.

On the installation of an in situ large-scale vertical SEALing (VSEAL) experiment on bentonite pellet-powder mixture

Recently,the Institute for Radiological protection and Nuclear Safety(IRSN)has launched VSEAL(Vertical SEALing)project to investigate the impact of gas migration on the long-term performance of bentonite based vertical sealing systems(VSS).the first VSEAL in situ test was emplaced in IRSN’s Underground Research Laboratory(URL)in tournemire(France)in 2019 and was equipped with 76 wired and wireless *** test is still in progress,but the collected set of data provides already valuable information of the hydro-mechanical behavior of VSS during *** swelling core consists of a mixture of highdensity pellets and powder of MX80 bentonite in a ratio of 80/20(in dry mass).An innovative method was adopted to drill a 1-m diameter and w10-m deep shaft in order to minimize the rock perturbation at the *** a specific protocol was adopted to install the bentonite mixture together with a careful characterization of the core during construction,VSEAL 1 constitutes the unique in situ sealing test with a well-known initial structural distribution of the pellets and the *** heterogeneities occurred within the experiment during the installation process:a damaged zone developed around the shaft walls due to the interruption of the installation operations caused by COVID19 lockdown in France;a technological gap with a variable thickness between the last pellets layer and the top confining lid and a heterogeneous distribution of the bentonite powder at some layers inducing large inter pellets voids close to the bentonite-rock *** injected water volume,relative humidity,water content and swelling pressure in both radial and axial directions were *** of the results showed that the presence of installation-induced heterogeneities led to the generation of preferential flow paths that influenced the swelling pressure evolution at radial and axial directions.

We introduce a new type of actuator,the microhydraulic stepping actuator(MSA),which borrows design and operational concepts from biological muscle and stepper *** offer a unique combination of power,efficiency,and scalability not easily achievable on the *** actuator works by integrating surface tension forces produced by electrowetting acting on scaled droplets along the length of a thin *** muscle,MSAs have liquid and solid functional components and can displace a large fraction of their *** 100μm pitch MSA presented here already has an output power density of over 200 W kg^(−1),rivaling the most powerful biological muscles,due to the scaling of surface tension forces,MSA’s power density grows quadratically as its dimensions are reduced.

Nodal user’s demand response based on incentive based programs

this paper describes a practical approach to identify nodal price compensation payment for nodal consumers willing to reduce their energy consumption(consumers’ demand response). the implementation of a nodal reliability service pricing is based on contingency assessment of N-2 order for transmission lines. A representative annualized demand curve is used to reflect the system’s operation condition by seasons. Such curve is used to access the nodal reliability impact trough a whole year in order to determine back-payments(incentive payment) to users for service interruption. the IEEE_RtS 24 nodes system is used to implement the proposed approach.

Assisted Natural Remediation of a trace Element-Contaminated Acid Soil:An Eight-Year Field Study

there are many remediation techniques for organic contaminated soils,but relatively few of them are applicable to trace elementcontaminated soils.A field experiment was carried out to investigate assisted natural remediation(ANR) of an acid soil contaminated by As,Cd,Cu,Zn and Pb using one inorganic amendment,sugar beet lime(SL),and two organic amendments,biosolid compost(BC)and leonardeite(LE).the experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design with four treatments in three replicates:1) a non-amended control(NA);2) SL amended at 30 Mg ha^(-1) year^(-1);3) BC amended at 30 Mg ha^(-1) year^(-1) and 4) LE amended at 20 Mg ha^(-1) year^(-1) plus SL amended at 10 Mg ha^(-1) year^(-1)(LESL).the amended plots received two doses of each amendment(DO2):one in October 2002 and another in October *** plots were then divided in half into two subpolts and one subplot received another two doses of the same amendments(DO4) in October 2005 and October *** 2011,the pH values of the amended soils were greater than that of the NA soil,with the SL-amended soil showing the highest *** organic carbon(tOC) was also greater in the amended soil,and greater with DO4 than with *** reduced the concentrations of 0.01 mol L^(-1) CaCl_2-extractable Cd,Cu and Zn,especially in the SL-amended *** cover of colonizing vegetation was enhanced by amendments,but was independent of amendment *** in soil properties from 2003 to 2011 showed that the first amendment application of DO2 caused a high differentiation between all the amendment treatments and the NA *** the second application of DO2,soil pH and tOC continued increasing *** two applications of amendments(DO4) caused differences only in the organic *** cover increased over time in all the treatments including *** could be concluded that the slow and steady natural remediation of this soil could be enhanced by amendment application(ANR).

Dipole and generalized oscillator strength derived electronic properties of an endohedral hydrogen atom embedded in a Debye-Huckel plasma

We report electronic properties of a hydrogen atom encaged by an endohedral cavity under the influence of a weak plasma interaction. Weimplement a finite-difference approach to solve the Schrodinger equation for a hydrogen atom embedded in an endohedral cavity modeled by theWoods-Saxon potential with well depth V0, inner radius R0, thickness D, and smooth parameter g. the plasma interaction is described by aDebye-Hu¨ckel screening potential that characterizes the plasma in terms of a Debye screening length lD. the electronic properties of theendohedral hydrogen atom are reported for selected endohedral cavity well depths, V0, and screening lengths, lD, that emulate differentconfinement and plasma conditions. We find that for low screening lengths, the endohedral cavity potential dominates over the plasma interaction by confining the electron within the cavity. For large screening lengths, a competition between both interactions is observed. We assessand report the photo-ionization cross section, dipole polarizability, mean excitation energy, and electronic stopping cross section as function of lD and V0. We find a decrease of the Generalized Oscillator Strength (GOS) when the final excitation is to an s state as the plasma screeninglength decreases. For a final excitation into a p state, we find an increase in the GOS as the endohedral cavity well-depth increases. For the caseof the electronic stopping cross section, we find that the plasma screening and endohedral cavity effects are larger in the low-to-intermediateprojectile energies for all potential well depths considered. Our results agree well to available theoretical and experimental data and are afirst step towards the understanding of dipole and generalized oscillator strength dependent properties of an atom in extreme conditions encagedby an endohedral cavity immersed in a plasma medium.
