Incidence of epiretinal membrane formation following treatment of diabetic retinopathy with panretinal photocoagulation therapy

AIM:To report the incidence of epiretinal membrane(ERM)formation following panretinal photocoagulation(PRP)as the treatment for diabetic retinopathy(DR).METHODS:Retrospective cross-sectional study of patient charts between January 1st,2010 to January 1st,2017 with at least 1y follow-up *** 809 patients treated with PRP for DR were evaluated for exclusion criteria and 73 eyes remained after exclusion for confounding variables related to ERM formation such as other procedures or *** were determined through medical record review and masked review of optical coherence tomography(OCT)***’s kappa was completed to determine if there was an agreement between masked retinal specialists on OCT *** logistic regression was used to determine the unadjusted odds ratio for patient and procedural characteristics on the formation of *** logistic regression was then completed on select variables that met the cutoff of 0.25 for a statistically significant contribution by the Wald test with the sequential addition of clinical variables that contributed positively to the ***:Among the 73 eyes studied,9.6%formed an ERM with an average time to formation of *** minimum power uses during PRP was found to be statistically significant between non-ERM formers and ERM formers(P=0.044).When adjusting for all selected variables aside from minimum power used,multiple logistic regression determined that for every 10 mW increase in minimum power used during PRP,there is an increase in log odds of 1.009(SE:0.003,P=0.014).CONCLUSION:The incidence of ERM formation in 2y following treatment of DR with PRP is roughly 1 in every 10 eyes treated.

AbTechnology has always driven advances in radiotherapy *** this review,we describe the main technological advances in radiotherapy over the past decades for the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer(NPC)and highlight some of the pressing issues and challenges that *** aim to identify emerging trends in radiation *** include advances in personalized medicine and advanced imaging modalities,standardization of planning and delineation,assessment of treatment response and adaptive re-planning,impact of particle therapy,and role of artificial intelligence or automation in clinical *** conclusion,we expect significant improvement in the therapeutic ratio of radiotherapy treatment for NPC over the next decade.

Cerebral ischemia is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although stroke （a form of cerebral ischemia）-related costs are expected to reach 240.67 billion dollars by 2030, options for treatment against cerebral ischemia/stroke are limited. All therapies except anti-thrombolytics （i.e., tissue plasminogen activator） and hypothermia have failed to reduce neuronal injury, neurological deficits, and mortality rates following cerebral ischemia, which suggests that development of novel therapies again st stroke/cerebral ischemia are urgently needed. Here, we discuss the possible mechanism（s） underlying cerebral ischemia-induced brain injury, as well as current and future novel therapies （i.e., growth factors, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, melatonin, resveratrol, protein kinase C isozymes, pifithrin, hypothermia, fatty acids, sympathoplegic drugs, and stem cells） as it relates to cerebral ischemia.

Classroom-Based Parent Interview in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

A classroom-based parent interview was designed and implemented in an undergraduate psychiatric mental health nursing class to fill the gap between nursing students and parents of child or adolescent patients with mental health issues faced during clinical. The goals of this learning activity were to increase understanding of what parents experience when dealing with their child’s mental health problems and to increase student engagement and attention. The class using this learning activity consisted of three parts: 1) an assigned pre-class reading;2) a mini-lecture;and 3) a parent interview presentation. Students were pre-assigned a reading chapter and faculty-developed interview questions. During the mini-lecture, important knowledge related to mental health care of children was assessed using CourseKey software. After the mini-lecture, the parent guest speaker delivered her presentation about herself, her child’s strengths and abilities, her child’s mental health problems and their impact, and her family’s strengths based on the interview question prompts for about 30 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of a Q & A session. The set of interview questions was developed by faculty based on the competency questions of the Child Behavior Check List. Despite some limitations, this classroom-based parent interview using a flipped classroom model was found to be a meaningful learning strategy by increasing student engagement and attention, increasing retention of knowledge learned in class, and filling that gap in clinical.
