Various studies indicate that low levels of estradiol negatively impact cognitive abilities. Extracts from the fungus Hericium erinaceus (HE) contain bioactive components that promote the proper functioning of the nervous system and potential effects on protection against neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia and motor dysfunctions. The objective was to evaluate the effects of the administration of the HE mushroom extract on visuospatial memory and morphology of neurons in the CA1 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus in ovariectomized rats. 40 young Wistar rats weighing 90 ± 10 g BW were used, which were distributed into four groups of 10 animals;Control Group, non-ovariectomized and untreated rats;Group E2, ovariectomized rats treated with estradiol (2 μg/kg/body weight);Group HE, ovariectomized rats treated with the extract of the fungus Hericium erinaceus (0.5 mg/kg body weight) and Group Ovx/ST, ovariectomized rats, without treatment. The animals were tested in the Barnes and Open Field maze, then they were sacrificed, and their brains were obtained to perform a histological analysis of neuronal morphology in the CA1 and CA3 areas of the hippocampus. The most outstanding results showed that the Ovx/ST group recorded the longest time to arrive at the escape box and stay in the Barnes maze. A correlation was observed between neuronal damage and function;in the groups that did not present satisfactory performance in the maze tests, morphological alterations were identified such as the presence of some neuronal somata with degeneration characteristics such as pyknosis, nuclear basophilia and shrinkage of the cells. Its soma, as well as a decrease in the nuclear area of CA1 and CA3 neurons. It is concluded that the fungus Hericium erinaceus exerted a neuroprotective effect on the neuronal bodies of the hippocampus, associated with better performance in the visuospatial recognition memory test.

This paper discussed effects of lowland-associated influences on upland ecology, food security and biocultural diversity in the Sarangani farming communities of the Philippines. In the uplands of Sarangani Province, the conservation of traditional rice varieties, the centrality of rice in tribal life, and the continued observance of planting rituals attest to its cultural significance and convey a common desire for cultural preservation and community solidarity. Economic and socio-political pressures had transformed tribal communities, although vestiges of traditional farming systems are still being practiced in remote sitios（villages）. Changing land use patterns had also resulted in shrinking farm sizes and consequently in food insecurity in the Sarangani uplands. Extractive industries（i.e. logging, mining and charcoal making） and swidden farming were observed to cause widespread environmental degradation, while modern agriculture had undermined the capacity of indigenous peoples to survive because of their complete dependence on lands and resources. With the reality that cultural and biological diversities are inextricably linked, trans-disciplinary strategies coupling indigenous knowledge systems with scientific knowledge should, therefore, be instituted to save the Sarangani upland ecosystem, the indigenous peoples and their tribal resources.

Objective: To examine three plant extracts [Lumnitzera racemosa(Combretaceae)(***), Albizia procera(Fabaceae)(***) and Cananga odorata(Annonaceae)] for their potential as source of photosensitizers in photodynamic ***: Human mammary adenocarcinoma(MCF-7) cells were treated with the plant extracts, which were irradiated with 5.53 m W and 0.553 mW broadband *** viability was assessed using MTT assay and induction of apoptosis was determined using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-dUTP nick end labeling ***: The crude ethanolic extracts, independently, were nontoxic against cancer and non-cancer cells but when irradiated with 5.53 mW broadband light, *** and *** extracts were cytotoxic against MCF-7 with IC_(50) of 11.63 mg/mL and10.73 mg/mL, *** 0.553 mW broadband light, the IC_(50) values were higher at 17.14 mg/mL and 19.59 mg/mL, *** *** and *** extracts were found to be more cytotoxic against MCF-7 than the non-cancer cell line, human dermal ***, the cytotoxicity of the extracts was mediated by ***: Two of the plant extracts used, *** and *** were toxic and induced apoptosis to mammary cell adenocarcinoma, MCF-7 when *** extracts were also more toxic to human cancer than non-cancer cell lines.

Emerging technologies such as electric vehicles,solid-state transformers,and DC transformers are implemented using the closed-loop bi-directional dual-active-bridge(DAB)*** this context,it is necessary to have average models that provide an efficient way of tuning the proportional integral(PI)compensator parameters for large-and small-signal *** present a novel small-signal model(SSM)for DAB converter with a single closed-loop PI controller and the total elimination of reactive current(IQ=0).The method applies a modulation technique for IQ=0 and introduces a composite function in the controller while reducing the original nonlinear switching model,which allows to decrease the order of the transfer function and analyze the closed-loop *** proposed SSM is analyzed using different response time,load,and DC voltage *** simulation and experimental results demonstrate the ease of implementation and effectiveness of the proposed model with respect to other SSM techniques.

Objective:To evaluate the cytotoxic activities of Premna odorata(***)leaves and bark,Artocarpus camansi(***)and Gliricidia sepium against selected human cancer cell lines by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)***:The crude extracts of ***,*** and Gliricidia sepium were subjected to liquid–liquid partitioning by using hexane and ethyl acetate to separate compounds based on their *** fractions were tested for their cytotoxic activity against human colon cancer cell line(HCT116),breast cancer cell line(MCF-7),lung adenocarcinoma cell line(A549)and Chinese hamster ovary cell line(AA8)by using MTT ***:Based on the standard values of toxicity set by the study of Suffness and Pezzuto,*** leaves and *** bark hexane fractions and *** leaves were all considered highly cytotoxic against the selected human cancer cell *** bark hexane extract exhibited the highest selectivity index for HCT116,MCF-7 and A549 cancer cell ***:The results obtained indicated that *** leaves and bark and *** leaves have excellent cytotoxic activity and warrant further studies to isolate novel compounds for chemotherapeutic use.

Although thermoplastic starch(TPS)is biodegradable,its low mechanical resistance limits its wide *** bagasse(SB)fibers can be used as reinforcement in TPS matrix composites,but the influence of fiber size on the properties of the composite is still *** this study,TPS composites reinforced with SB short fibers of four sizes were processed and characterized in order to analyze the influence of fiber size on the mechanical properties of the TPS/SB *** was observed that the interaction between fiber and matrix was good and optimized when the fibers are sifted in sieves between 30 and 50 mesh,obtaining fibers with average length of 1569±640μm and average diameter of 646±166μ*** these composites,increases of more than 660%in the modulus and more than 100%in the maximum tension were verified when compared to the pure TPS.
