Psychosocial mechanisms for the transmission of somatic symptoms from parents to children

AIM: To examine familial aggregation of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) via parental reinforcement/modeling of symptoms, coping, psychological distress, and exposure to ***:Mothers of children between the ages of8 and 15 years with and without IBS were identified through the Group Health Cooperative of Puget *** completed questionnaires,including the Child Behavior Checklist(child psychological distress),the Family Inventory of Life Events(family exposure to stress),SCL-90R(mother psychological distress),and the Pain Response Inventory(beliefs about pain).Children were interviewed separately from their parents and completed the Pain Beliefs Questionnaire(beliefs about pain),Pain Response Inventory(coping)and Child Symptom Checklist[gastrointestinal(GI)symptoms].In addition,health care utilization data was obtained from the automated database of Group Health *** with IBS(n=207)and their 296 children were compared to 240 control mothers and their 335 children,while controlling for age and ***:Hypothesis 1:reinforcement of expression of GI problems is only related to GI symptoms,but not others(cold symptoms)in *** was no significant correlation between parental reinforcement of symptoms and child expression of GI or other *** 2:modeling of GI symptomsis related to GI but not non-GI symptom reporting in *** of parents with IBS reported more non-GI(8.97 vs 6.70,P<0.01)as well as more GI(3.24 vs 2.27,P<0.01)*** health care visits made by the mother correlated with visits made by the child(rho=0.35,P<0.001 for cases,rho=0.26,P<0.001 for controls).Hypothesis 3:children learn to share the methods of coping with illness that their mothers *** used by children to cope with stomachaches differed from methods used by their *** 2/16 scales showed weak but significant correlations(stoicism rho=0.13,P<0.05;acceptance rho=0.13,P<0.05).Hypothesis 4:mothers and chi

Measuring and Visualizing Research Collaboration and Productivity

Purpose： This paper presents findings of a quasi-experimental assessment to gauge the research productivity and degree of interdisciplinarity of research center outputs. Of special interest, we share an enriched visualization of research co-authoring patterns. Design/methodology/approach： We compile publications by 45 researchers in each of 1） the iUTAH project, which we consider here to be analogous to a ＂research center,＂ 2） CG1-a comparison group of participants in two other Utah environmental research centers, and 3） CG2--a comparison group of Utah university environmental researchers not associated with a research center. We draw bibliometric data from Web of Science and from Google Scholar. We gather publications for a period before iUTAH had been established （2010-2012） and a period after （2014-2016）. We compare these research outputs in terms of publications and citations thereto. We also measure interdisciplinarity using Integration scoring and generate science overlay maps to locate the research publications across disciplines. Findings： We find that participation in the iUTAH project appears to increase research outputs （publications in the After period） and increase research citation rates relative to the comparison group researchers （although CG 1 research remains most cited, as it was in the Before period）. Most notably, participation in iUTAH markedly increases co-authoring among researchers--in general; and for junior, as well as senior, faculty; for men and women： across organizations; and across disciplines. Research limitations： The quasi-experimental design necessarily generates suggestive, not definitively causal, findings because of the imperfect controls. Practical implications： This study demonstrates a viable approach for research assessment of a center or program for which random assignment of control groups is not possible. It illustrates use of bibliometric indicators to inform R＆D program management. Originality/value： New visualizations

MEASURING AND LOCATING ZONES OF CHAOS AND IRREGULARITY

The new measures computed here are the spectral detrended fluctuation anatysls （sDFA） and spectral multi-taper method （sMTM）. sDFA applies the standard detrended fluctuation analysis （DFA） algorithm to power spectra, sMTM exploits the minute increases in the broadband response, typical of chaotic spectra approaching optimal values. The authors chose the Brusselator, Lorenz, and Duffing as the proposed models to measure and locate chaos and severe irregularity. Their series of chaotic parametric responses in short time-series is advantageous. Where cycles have only a limited number of slow oscillations such as for systems biology and medicine. It is difficult to create, locate, or monitor chaos. From 50 linearly increasing starting points applied to the chaos target function （CTF）; the mean percentage increases in Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy （KS-Entropy） for the proposed chosen models; and p-values when the models were compared statistically by Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA1 test with distributions assumed normal are Duffing （CTF： 31%： p 〈0.03）; Lorenz （CTF： 2%： p 〈0.03）, and I3russelator （CTF： 8%： p 〈0.01）. Principal component analysis （PCA） is applied to assess the significance of the objective functions for tuning the chaotic response. From PCA the conclusion is that CTF is the most beneficial objective function overall delivering the highest increases in mean KS-Entropy.

Clinical application of DNA ploidy to cervical cancer screening: A review

Screening for cervical cancer with DNA ploidy assessment by automated quantitative image cytometry has spread throughout China over the past decade and now an estimated 1 million tests per year are done there. Compared to conventional liquid based cytology, DNA ploidy has competitive accuracy with much higher throughput per technician. DNA ploidy has the enormous advantage that it is an objective technology that can be taught in typically 2 or 3 wk, unlike qualitative cytology, and so it can enable screening in places that lack sufficient qualified cytotechnologists and cytopathologists for conventional cytology. Most papers on experience with application of the technology to cervical cancer screening over the past decade were published in the Chinese language. This review aims to provide a consistent framework for analysis of screening data and to summarize some of the work published from 2005 to the end of 2013. Of particular interest are a few studies comparing DNA ploidy with testing for high risk human papilloma virus(hrH PV) which suggest that DNA ploidy is at least equivalent, easier and less expensive than hrH PV testing. There may also be patient management benefits to combining hr HPV testing with DNA ploidy. Some knowledge gaps are identified and some suggestions are made for future research directions.

The development of structural materials resistant to harsh radiation environments requires an in-depth understanding of the early stage of the aging *** radiation environments with high transmutation helium production rates such as in fusion and spallation applications,even materials with otherwise acceptable radiation stability may suffer from radiation embrittlement related to helium bubble *** theoretical modeling of helium-assisted cavity nucleation in pure metals and simple alloys provides some useful guidelines at the atomic scale level,these,however,do not overlap with the size resolution of available experimental *** this study,we employed slow positron beam spectroscopy to characterize the nucleation and growth of nano-scale helium bubbles in martensitic steels strengthened by thermodynamically stable nano-oxide *** combination with transmission electron microscopy,we experimentally characterized the evolution of helium bubbles from small clusters of radiation-induced vacancies to large cavities well resolvable by *** radiation resistance of oxide-dispersion strengthened steels dominates only in the early stages of bubble evolution,where positron lifetime measurements provide a missing piece of the microstructural puzzle conventionally constructed by TEM.

Creative Expression: Effectiveness of a Weekly Craft Group with Women Who Have Experienced Trauma

Creativity interventions have been shown to positively influence psychological and emotional health indicators. Nurses can play an important role in the development and implementation of interventions designed to counter the longer-term emotional and psychological consequences of trauma. The purpose of this study was to explore how participation in a nurse-facilitated weekly craft group may influence anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and self-confidence among women who have emotional and physical experienced trauma. A pre/post visual analog scale was used during a 7-week intervention to measure changes in anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem and self-confidence among a convenience sample of adult female trauma survivors (n = 33). A paired sample t test was used to evaluate the intervention with significance set at p = 0.05. Participant observation and field notes were used for qualitative data generation. Significant reductions were noted in anxiety, depression, and stress along with significant increases in self-esteem and self-confidence. Cohen’s d statistic indicated a large effect size for anxiety (0.72) and stress (0.69). Moderate effect size was determined for self-confidence (0.36), depression (0.41), and self-esteem (0.52). Emergent qualitative themes included: creative expression improved confidence to sooth the self, safe spaces fostered creativity, a sense of accomplishment was stimulated through creative activities, and creative expression groups provided opportunities for positive affirmation. Offered as a complementary intervention, nurse-facilitated creative expression groups can support continued healing long after traditional support services have been exhausted. It is important for nurses to pursue a greater understanding of the art of nursing and the important contribution of creativity when used as a nursing intervention with trauma survivors.

Flexible surface acoustic wave(SAW)devices have recently attracted tremendous attention for their widespread application in sensing and ***,for these applications,SAW devices often need to be bent into offaxis deformations between the acoustic wave propagation direction and bending ***,there are few studies on this topic,and the bending mechanisms during off-axis bending deformations have remained unexplored for multisensing ***,we fabricated aluminum nitride(AlN)flexible SAW devices by using high-quality AlN films deposited on flexible glass substrates and systematically investigated their complex deformation behaviors.A theoretical model was first developed using coupling wave equations and the boundary condition method to analyze the characteristics of the device with bending and off-axis deformation under elastic *** relationships between the frequency shifts of the SAW device and the bending strain and off-axis angle were obtained,and the results were identical to those from the theoretical ***,we performed proof-of-concept demonstrations of its multisensing potential by monitoring human wrist movements at various off-axis angles and detecting UV light intensities on a curved surface,thus paving the way for the application of versatile flexible electronics.

Vibration in mice: A review of comparative effects and use in translational research

Sound pressure waves surround individuals in everyday life and are perceived by animals and humans primarily through sound or vibration. When sound pressure waves traverse through a solid medium, vibration will result. Vibration has long been considered an unwanted variable in animal research and may confound scientific endeavors using animals. Understanding the characteristics of vibration is required to determine whether effects in animals are likely to be therapeutic or result in adverse biological effects. The eighth edition of the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" highlights the importance of considering vibration and its effects on animals in the research setting, but knowledge of the level of vibration for eliciting these effects was unknown. The literature provides information regarding therapeutic use of vibration in humans, but the range of conditions to be of therapeutic benefit is varied and without clarity. Understanding the characteristics of vibration(eg, frequency and magnitude) necessary to cause various effects will ultimately assist in the evaluation of this environmental factor and its role on a number of potential therapeutic regimens for use in humans. This paper will review the principles of vibration, sources within a research setting, comparative physiological effects in various species, and the relative potential use of vibration in the mouse as a translational research model.

Assessment of Physicochemical Parameters and Heavy Metals in the Surface Water of North Alabama

Water quality in North Alabama is becoming a critical issue and in order to understand the quality of water in the Flint Creek and Flint Rivers,concentration levels of physicochemical parameters and trace heavy metals were measured in six strategically selected sites within the streams to obtain baseline data.A total of 192 surface water samples were collected and analyzed for total phosphorous and five heavy metals of *** and chemical parameters were determined for dissolved oxygen(DO),turbidity,pH,temperature,water conductivity and total *** concentration of the DO was above guidelines in three sites at both *** metals were statistically significant(P≤0.05)at 95%confidence interval by *** and lead exceeded their maximum permissible *** results for heavy metals in this study show location and seasonal *** was significantly higher heavy metal content during winter>spring>summer>*** values for the Hazard Quotient and Hazard Index for both watershed sites were mostly more than 1,indicating some levels of ***,surrounding rocks and other anthropogenic sources appeared to be causing the elevated chemical content of the rivers and may have resulted in significant adverse impacts on the study areas.

Role of Anti Angiogenic Therapy in Prevention of Recurrence in Hormonal Positive Breast Cancer: A Secondary Prevention Strategy and Method of Therapy

Existing literature supports the role of signaling protein vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in tumor growth and metastasis and furthers its involvement in recurrence. In both experimental and clinical studies, VEGF has been shown to be a significant factor involved for aberrant blood vessel growth, and in fact is the target of several classes of antineoplastic drugs [1] [2] [3] [4]. That said, the current standard of care for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer (although improved over the last decade), has not provided a “meaningful preventive shift” since the discovery of angiogenesis and its role in induction of recurrence. In this article, we discuss an anti angiogenic therapy implementing natural compounds to inhibit the production of VEGF. We applied our preclinical data to justify the predicted effect on VEGF. We used liquid biopsy to monitor patients response to therapy as a surrogate for recurrence. We hypothesize that by inhibition of angiogenesis through this protocol, we are able to positively impact tumor recurrence. It is our experience that patients in our sample even with high recurrence scores (based on Oncotype Dx testing) had a major reduction in recurrence when estrogen blockers were combined with this protocol. We also propose longitudinal studies to compare outcomes with combinational therapies with estrogen blockers in highly expected to recur disease.
