Time and space analysis of two earthquakes in the Appennines (Italy)

In this paper, we study two earthquakes: the April 6th 2009 earthquake of L’Aquila in the region of Abruzzo (Italy) and the 1997 Colfiorito earthquake in the regions of Umbria and Marche (Italy). The data sets of these two earthquakes were analysed in both time and space domains. For time domain we used statistical methods and models both parametric and non-parametric. Concerning the space domain, we used Mathematical Morphology filters. The time domain analysis provides evidence of a possible correlation between seismic activities and the tides of the crust of the Earth. The results obtained show evidence that the daily number of earthquakes of the sequences proceeding and following the April 6th 2009 earthquake of L’Aquila and that of the sequence following the 1997 Colfiorito earthquake have a periodic component of occurrence with period of about 7 days. It seems that the maxima of this component occur at a position of the Moon with respect to the Earth and the Sun corresponding to approximately 3 days before the four main Moon phases. The space domain analysis indicates that the foreshock activity in both earthquakes is clustered and concentrated. Furthermore, in each of the two earthquakes the clusters are located at about 3 kilometers from the epicentre of the main shock.

Memory and relaxation time of biological systems. an analysis of the effect of abortion legalization in italy

When a population is affected by a new law there is a lag between the date of application of the law and the response of the population;moreover there is a relaxation time after which a steady state is reached. The time to maximum response and the relaxation time may be approximately estimated from the raw data but the mathematical modeling of the data allows a better estimate. The model, when tested on real data, may be used for future laws or, when appropriately adapted, for other biological systems also. In this note the memory based model is tested on the effects of the 1978 law which legalized the abortions in Italy finding the response and the relaxation time. It is shown that Italian population, after the abortion law, has required about 5 years to have the maximum effect and about 10 years to reach stability. The evolution of women life and the changes of the structure of society in Italy is also discussed.

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of starting therapy with either Truvada (TVD) or Combivir (CBV) in combination with Efavirenz (EFV) or a boosted Protease Inhibitor (LPV/r, ATV/r, fAPV/r and SQV/r) on clinical, immunological, and virological parameters in HIV-infected antiretroviral (ARV) naive patients. Methods: Twenty-seven patients were prospectively enrolled and received TVD-EFV, 32 TVD-PI/r, 24 CBV-EFV, and 23 CBV-PI/r. Immunovirological analyses were performed at baseline and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after initiation of therapy;a full set of data is available for 51 patients. Results: Median CD4+ cell counts and HIV-RNA plasma viremia were comparable in the four groups of patients (TVD-EFV, TVD-PI/r, CBV-EFV, CBV-PI/r) at baseline. At month 12 HIV RNA plasma viremia was <50 cps/ml in all patients. Median CD4 cell counts increases were higher, although not significantly, in CBV-EFV and TVD-EFV patients. Finally, CD8+/CD38+/CDRO+T lymphocytes were significantly decreased after 12 months of therapy in all patients with, possibly, a faster effect seen in the EFV groups. Conclusions: Immunologic parameters are similarly affected by different ARV combinations, even if EFV-associated immunomodulation might be marginally better.
