Antiviral therapy of hepatitis C as curative treatment of indolent B-cell lymphoma

The association of hepatitis C virus(HCV) and B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas(NHL) has been highlighted by several epidemiological and biological insights; however the most convincing evidence is represented by interventional studies demonstrating the capability of antiviral treatment(AT) with interferon(IFN) with or without ribavirin to induce the regression of indolent lymphomas, especially of marginal-zone origin. In the largest published retrospective study(100 patients) the overall response rate(ORR) after first-line IFN-based AT was 77%(44% complete responses) and responses were sustainable(median duration of response 33 mo). These results were confirmed by a recent metaanalysis on 254 patients, demonstrating an ORR of 73%. Moreover this analysis confirmed the highly significant correlation between the achievement of viral eradication sustained virological response(SVR) and hematological responses. Two large prospective studies demonstrated that AT is associated with improved survival and argue in favor of current guidelines' recommendation of AT as preferential first-line option in asymptomatic patients with HCV-associated indolent NHL. The recently approved direct-acting antiviral agents(DAAs) revolutionized the treatment of HCV infection, leading to SVR approaching 100% in all genotypes. Very preliminary data of IFN-free DAAs therapy in indolent HCV-positive NHL seem to confirm their activity in inducing lymphoma regression.

Energy analysis of a wood or pellet stove in a single-family house equipped with gas boiler and radiators

In the residential sector,biomass appliances are widely used for space heating and often combined with other *** work aims at comparing the final and primary energy consumption of different configurations,including a conventional and a ducted pellet stove and a wood log stove using air as heat transfer fluid.A dynamic analysis of the interaction between biomass stoves and conventional heating systems,such as gas boilers and radiators,is carried out within a typical single-family house in a mild climate,using TRNSYS *** addition,natural ventilation of the building is considered using CONTAM,with a focus on external infiltrations and internal air circulation due to the buoyancy *** show that the biomass device in one room promotes the airflows between adjacent thermal zones,enhancing the heat distribution through door openings,in particular when an air ducted stove is *** final energy consumption resulting from simulations with wood-burning stoves is 21%higher than pellet *** pellet stove results in similar final energy and a 30%increase in overall primary energy,while the wood stove increases the final energy by 22%and approximately 40%of overall primary energy compared to the case of a traditional gas system coupled to radiators which is considered as ***,non-renewable primary energy savings are higher than 50%with pellet stoves and 60%with wood-log stoves.

Migration of the Western Marsh Harrier to the African wintering quarters along the Central Mediterranean flyway:a 5-year study

Background: The Western Marsh Harrier(Circus aeruginosus) is a partial migrant with the populations from Eastern and Northern Europe migrating south to sub-Saharan Africa. During the autumn migration, that is peaking in Septem ber, harriers move on a broad front heading SW and undertake long sea-crossings en route to their wintering quarters, passing in substantial numbers through Italy and Malta with the highest concentrations recorded at the Strait of Messina. Most of the individuals migrating across the Strait are heading for the wintering quarters in Africa, while fewer spend the winter in ***: In a 5-year study(2011-2015), between 26 August and 30 September, we determined age and sex of autumn migrating harriers through this flyway. In 2014 we determined, by marine radar and optical range finder, the flight altitude of migrating ***: A total of 10,261 Western Marsh Harriers were counted during the whole study, with an average of 2052 per autumn season. Adults outnumbered juveniles and males outnumbered females. Harriers flew at lower altitudes during the morning while large flocks flew lower than single birds or small ***: Our observations are consistent with previous surveys and confirm that adult males have a tendency to migrate over a long distance, while substantial numbers of adult females and juveniles do not head for the wintering quarters in Africa. Finally, flight patterns recorded can be explained by a more pronounced flapping flight of Western Marsh Harriers during migration.

Airborne laser scanning of natural forests in New Zealand reveals the influences of wind on forest carbon

Background： Forests are a key component of the global carbon cycle, and research is needed into the effects of human-driven and natural processes on their carbon pools. Airborne laser scanning （ALS） produces detailed 3D maps of forest canopy structure from which aboveground carbon density can be estimated. Working with a ALS dataset collected over the 8049-km2 Wellington Region of New Zealand we create maps of indigenous forest carbon and evaluate the influence of wind by examining how carbon storage varies with aspect. Storms flowing from the west are a common cause of disturbance in this region, and we hypothesised that west-facing forests exposed to these winds would be shorter than those in sheltered east-facing sites. Methods： The aboveground carbon density of 31 forest inventory plots located within the ALS survey region were used to develop estimation models relating carbon density to ALS information. Power-law models using rasters of top-of-the-canopy height were compared with models using tree-level information extracted from the ALS dataset. A forest carbon map with spatial resolution of 25 m was generated from ALS maps of forest height and the estimation models. The map was used to evaluate the influences of wind on forests. Results： Power-law models were slightly less accurate than tree-centric models （RMSE 35% vs 32%） but were selected for map generation for computational efficiency. The carbon map comprised 4.5 million natural forest pixels within which canopy height had been measured by ALS, providing an unprecedented dataset with which to examine drivers of carbon density. Forests facing in the direction of westerly storms stored less carbon, as hypothesised. They had much greater above-ground carbon density for a given height than any of 14 tropical forests previously analysed by the same approach, and had exceptionally high basal areas for their height. Advantages of preoperative planning using computed tomography scan for treatment of malleolar ankle fractures

Malleolar ankle fractures have been classified using plain radiographs,and there is no consensus regarding the role of computed tomography(CT)scans in preoperative *** analyzed critical aspects,such as limits of standard radiographs,types of injury,classification methods and cost/benefit *** scans allow a 3 D analysis of the fracture to be obtained and consequently assess the indication for surgical procedure,surgical access and the type of fixation devices *** exam is useful for detecting lesions that may go unnoticed on radiographs and will help surgeons to clarify the pathoanatomy of ankle *** to Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen/Orthopaedic Trauma Association(AO/OTA)classification,CT scan is recommended in medial malleolar fractures with vertical rim,type 44 B fractures with posterior malleolar involvement and all type 44 C fractures(according to AO/OTA).Also Tillaux-Chaput fractures(43-B1 according to AO/OTA),malleolar fractures in the presence of distal tibial fractures(43 according to AO/OTA)and distal tibia fractures in adolescents should be studied with CT scans.

The Ritz-Sublaminate Generalized Unified Formulation approach for piezoelectric composite plates
