Liver pathology in COVID-19 related death and leading role of autopsy in the pandemic

BACKGROUND Information on liver involvement in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 is currently *** To highlight the pathological changes found during the autopsy of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 positive *** A systematic literature search on PubMed was carried out until June 21,*** A literature review reveals that pre-existing liver disease and elevation of liver enzyme in these patients are not common;liver enzyme elevations tend to be seen in those in critical *** the poor expression of viral receptors in the liver,it seems that the virus is able to infect this organ and therefore cause liver ***,to date,the search for the virus inside the liver is not frequent(16%of the cases)and only a small number show the presence of the *** most of the autopsy cases,macroscopic assessment is lacking,while microscopic evaluation of livers has revealed the frequent presence of congestion(42.7%)and steatosis(41.6%).Less frequent is the finding of hepatic inflammation or necrosis(19%)and portal inflammation(18%).The presence of microthrombi,frequently found in the lungs,is infrequent in the liver,with only 12%of cases presenting thrombotic formations within the vascular *** To date,the greatest problem in interpreting these modifications remains the association of the damage with the direct action of the virus,rather than with the inflammation or alterations induced by hypoxia and hypovolemia in patients undergoing oxygen therapy and decompensated patients.

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, working memory and episodic memory processes: insight through transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques

The ability to recall and recognize facts we experienced in the past is based on a complex mechanism in which several cerebral regions are implicated. Neuroimaging and lesion studies agree in identifying the frontal lobe as a crucial structure for memory processes, and in particular for working memory and episodic memory and their relationships. Furthermore, with the introduction of transcranial magnetic stimulation （TMS） a new way was proposed to investigate the relationships between brain correlates, memory functions and behavior. The aim of this review is to present the main findings that have emerged from experiments which used the TMS technique for memory analysis. They mainly focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in memory process. Furthermore, we present state-of-the-art evidence supporting a possible use of TMS in the clinic. Specifically we focus on the treatment of memory deficits in depression and anxiety disorders.

Traces and echoes of De Architectura by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio in the work of Xu Guangqi in 17th century China

This study aims to investigate the role played by Xu Guangqi （1562-1633）, minister of the Ming Dynasty, in the development of European scientific and technical knowledge in China between the 16th and 17th centuries by analyzing a book of Western technology that he wrote, namely, Taixi Shuifa （On Western Hydraulics）. Several Western books related to machine knowledge are searched to trace the source of the illustrations in Taixi Shuifa. We found that Archimedes＇ screw and Ctesibius＇ machine, which are included in Vitruvius＇ De Architectura volumes, also appear in the work of Xu Guangqi.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that goes f rom mild cogni t ive impai rment in prodromal disease to severely disabling deficits in advanced *** risk for AD development,as well as progression and severity,clearly differ between men and women(Pike,2017).Epidemiological studies have shown that there is a significantly increased prevalence in the development of AD in women compared to men,which is usually explained by the longer lifespan of *** increased frequency may be due to the interplay between age and sex,in which genetic factors together with hormonal and metabolic patterns play a crucial ***,cognitive impairment has been confirmed to be greater in women than in men at the same stage of AD,likely due to reduced estrogen levels in postmenopausal women(Laws et al.,2016).

Introduction1Death, mankind’s unavoidable destiny, has been considered by humans from all eras and in all places, and our discomfort in dealing with death and dying connects us across historical and geographical divides.2 Following the example set by anthropologists, scholars in other fields have begun to realize the importance of studying the reactions of diferent civilizations to the eternal problem of death, both verbally and nonverbally. Among the classic studies on the subject, the work of Robert Hertz and Ernesto De Martino merits special mention.

ASSYRIAN TREATIES: “PATCHWORK” TEXTS

The article offers a linguistic and stylistic analysis of the Neo-Assyrian treaties culled from the SAA Ⅱ(1988).The analysis focuses on defining scribal procedures in building up the text,which may then be conclusively labelled as a“patchwork.”Proceeding through the preamble,list of witnesses,and content,I explore a range of sampling which demonstrates the substantially fixed-albeit expandable-structure of the treaties'texts.I argue that this evidence shows that the structure of the treaties’texts had a great communicative efficacy thanks to its standardized character,as well as facilitated the scribes’editorial *** fixed nature of these texts was also related to the principles of the legal tradition,which itself was adapted to the historical and political circumstances of the Neo-Assyrian period.

Genes of the AGAMOUS subfamily have been shown to play crucial roles in reproductive organ identity determination, fruit, and seed development. They have been deeply studied in eudicot species and especially in Arabidopsis. Recently, the AGAMOUS subfamily of rice has been studied for their role in flower development and an enormous amount of data has been generated. In this review, we provide an overview of these data and discuss the conservation of gene functions between rice and Arabidopsis.

Heat Transfer,Knock Modeling and Cyclic Variability in a “Downsized”Spark-Ignition Turbocharged Engine

In the present paper a combined procedure for the quasi-dimensional modelling of heat transfer,combustion and knock phenomena in a “downsized”Spark Ignition two-cylinder turbocharged engine is *** procedure is extended to also include the effects consequent the Cyclic *** transfer is modelled by means of a Finite Elements *** simulation is based on a fractal description of the flame front *** Variability(CV)is characterized through the introduction of a random variation on a number of parameters controlling the rate of heat release(air/fuel ratio,initial flame kernel duration and radius,laminar flame speed,turbulence intensity).The intensity of the random variation is specified in order to realize a Coefficient Of Variation(COV)of the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure(IMEP)similar to the one measured during an experimental ***,the relative importance of the various concurring effects is established on the overall COV.A kinetic scheme is then solved within the unburned gas zone,characterized by different thermodynamic conditions occurring *** this way,an optimal choice of the “knock-limited”spark advance is effected and compared with experimental ***,the CV effects on the occurrence of individual knocking cycles are assessed and discussed.
