Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that goes f rom mild cogni t ive impai rment in prodromal disease to severely disabling deficits in advanced stages.The risk for AD development,as well as progression and severity,clearly differ between men and women(Pike,2017).Epidemiological studies have shown that there is a significantly increased prevalence in the development of AD in women compared to men,which is usually explained by the longer lifespan of women.This increased frequency may be due to the interplay between age and sex,in which genetic factors together with hormonal and metabolic patterns play a crucial role.Moreover,cognitive impairment has been confirmed to be greater in women than in men at the same stage of AD,likely due to reduced estrogen levels in postmenopausal women(Laws et al.,2016).

The ability to recall and recognize facts we experienced in the past is based on a complex mechanism in which several cerebral regions are implicated. Neuroimaging and lesion studies agree in identifying the frontal lobe as a crucial structure for memory processes, and in particular for working memory and episodic memory and their relationships. Furthermore, with the introduction of transcranial magnetic stimulation （TMS） a new way was proposed to investigate the relationships between brain correlates, memory functions and behavior. The aim of this review is to present the main findings that have emerged from experiments which used the TMS technique for memory analysis. They mainly focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in memory process. Furthermore, we present state-of-the-art evidence supporting a possible use of TMS in the clinic. Specifically we focus on the treatment of memory deficits in depression and anxiety disorders.

Spinal muscular atrophy(SMA)is a genetic disorder that primarily affects infants and leads to muscle weakness,atrophy,and paralysis.The main cause is the homozygous mutation or deletion of the SMN1 gene,resulting in inadequate levels of the survival motor neuron(SMN)protein.Approved treatments focus on restoring SMN levels through various approaches,but there is a need for“SMN-independent”therapies that target other pathological processes.Skeletal muscle is closely involved in SMA pathology,with impaired muscle function observed before motor neuron degeneration.Studies have revealed that SMN loss leads to skeletal muscle mitochondrial structural abnormalities,impaired respiration,and accumulation of reactive oxygen species.

The article offers a linguistic and stylistic analysis of the Neo-Assyrian treaties culled from the SAA Ⅱ(1988).The analysis focuses on defining scribal procedures in building up the text,which may then be conclusively labelled as a“patchwork.”Proceeding through the preamble,list of witnesses,and content,I explore a range of sampling which demonstrates the substantially fixed-albeit expandable-structure of the treaties'texts.I argue that this evidence shows that the structure of the treaties’texts had a great communicative efficacy thanks to its standardized character,as well as facilitated the scribes’editorial work.The fixed nature of these texts was also related to the principles of the legal tradition,which itself was adapted to the historical and political circumstances of the Neo-Assyrian period.

Hydraulic fracturing is frequently used to increase the permeability of rock formations in energy extraction scenarios such as unconventional oil and gas extraction and enhanced geothermal systems(EGSs).The present study addresses uncertainties in the hydraulic fracturing process pertaining to EGSs in crystalline rock such as granite.Specifically,there is debate in the literature on the mechanisms(i.***.tensile and/or shear)by which these fractures initiate,propagate,and coalesce.We present experiments on Barre granite with pre-cut flaws where the material is loaded to high far-field stresses close to shear failure,and then the fluid pressure in the flaws is increased to move the Mohr’s circle to the left and observe the initiation and propagation of fractures using high-speed imaging and acoustic emissions(AEs).We find that the hydraulic fractures initiate as tensile microcracks at the flaw tips,and then propagate as a combination of tensile and shear microcracks.AE focal mechanisms also show elevated levels of tensional microfracturing near the flaw tips during pressurization and final failure.We then consider a numerical model of the experimental setup,where we find that fractures are indeed likely to initiate at flaw tips in tension even at relatively high far-field stresses of 40 MPa where shear failure is generally expected.

Not all topics can be treated in the same way. Some are too intimate or thorny to be discussed without precautions in our use of language. One of these topics is undoubtedly death, a timeless and placeless taboo in which psychological, religious, and social interdictions are embodied. The aim of this paper is to explore the linguistic devices that Akkadian speakers used to tone down the taboo and cope with death. To address the issue, written sources, belonging to different genres and time periods, are examined.

We read with considerable interest the paper from Passeri et al.[1]questioning how the IIIb preoperative determination of a Klatskin tumor could be considered a risk factor for unresectability,and we could not refrain from making some critical recommendations about it.Although the paper was nicely written,in our opinion,no meaningful conclusion should however be drawn from it,due to the small sample size of the reported series.

外国援助对经济增长的有效性一直存在争议。自中非加强合作以来,中国的援助受到一些西方国家的非议,因为中国政府没有公布有关中国援助的完整官方信息。本文旨在检验西方援助和中国援助对受援国经济增长的有效性是否确实存在差异。这项工作调查了西方和中国向几内亚和科特迪瓦提供的官方发展援助之间的关系。分析是通过比较案例进行的,审查了中国和西方官方发展援助数额与受援国国内生产总值年增长之间的相互关系。研究发现,在几内亚和科特迪瓦,中国援助的增加和较高的国内生产总值增长之间存在着直接的联系。中国官方发展援助与增长之间的积极关系可以归因于中国的援助数额巨大,这使得受援国政府能够增加生产部门的支出。此外,由于中国的援助主要涉及大型基础设施项目,它为建筑业创造了就业机会,并有助于改善和扩大运输系统,从而增加了贸易和出口,并促进了经济增长。相反,西方援助非常重视卫生和教育部门,因此促进受援国的人类发展,但对国内生产总值增长的影响不大。
