AIM： The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictive factors of survival in patients with locally advanced squamous cell esophag.al carcinoma （LASCOC） treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy （CRT） reg.men based on the 5FU/CddP combination. METHOdS： All patients with LASCOC treated with a definitive CRT using.the 5FU/CddP combination between 1994 and 2000 were retrospectively included. Clinical complete response （CCR） to CRT was assessed by esophag.al endoscopy and C-F-scan 2 mo after CRT completion. Prog.ostic factors of survival were assessed using.univariate and multivariate analysis by the Cox reg.ession model. RESULTS： A total of 116 patients were included in the study. A CCR to CRT was observed in 86/116 （74.1%）. The median survival was 20 mo （rang. 2-114） and the 5-year survival was 9.4%. Median survival of responder patients to CRT was 25 mo （rang. 3-114） as compared to 9 mo （rang. 2-81） in non-responder patients （P 〈 0.001）. In univariate analysis, survival was associated with CCR （P 〈 0.001）, WHO performance status 〈 2 （P = 0.01）, tumour leng.h 〈 6 cm （P = 0.045） and weig.t loss 〈 10% was in limit of sig.ificance （P = 0.053）. In multivariate analysis, survival was dependant to CCR （P 〈 0.0001）, weig.t loss 〈 10% （P = 0.034） and WHO performance 〈 2 （P = 0.046）. CONCLUSION： Our results sug.est that survival in patients with LASCOC b＇eated with definitive CRT was correlated to CCR, weig.t loss and WHO performance status.

Silicene, the silicon counterpart of g.aphene, has been successfully g.own on metallic substrates such as Ag.111）, ZrB2（0001）, and Ir（111） surfaces. However, characterization of its electronic structure is hampered by the metallic substrate. In addition, potential applications of silicene in nanoelectronic devices will require its g.owth on or integ.ation with semiconducting.and insulating.substrates. We herein present a review of recent theoretical works reg.rding.the interaction of silicene with non-metallic templates, disting.ishing.between the weak van-der-Waals-like interactions of silicene with, for example, layered metal （di）chalcog.nides, and the strong.r covalent bonding.between silicene and, for example, ZnS surfaces. We then present a methodolog. to effectively compare the stability of diverse silicene structures using.thermodynamics and molecular dynamics density functional theory calculations. Recent experimental results on the g.owth of silicene on MoS2 are also reported and compared to the theoretical predictions.

The Altaid tectonic collag. extends over Central Asia, exposing.numerous accretionary orog.ns that can account for the Palaeozoic continental crust g.owth. A pluridisciplinary approach, using.g.ochronolog.cal, g.ochemical, structural and palaeomag.etic tools was carried out to unravel the architecture and the evolution of West Jung.ar （Northwestern China）, a seg.ent of the Altaid Collag.. A polycyclic g.odynamic evolution is inferred and includes：（1） an Early Palaeozoic cycle, characterized by the closure of two oceanic basins bounded by island-arc systems; （2） an Early devonian subduction jamming.resulting.in a minor-scale collision documented by thrusting. syntectonic sedimentation and subsequent crutal thinning.associ- ated with alkaline mag.atism; （3） a Late Palaeozoic cycle, driven by the evolution of two opposite subduction zones devel- oped upon the Early Palaeozoic basement. detailed structural analysis and paleomag.etic data provide constraints for the late evolution of Jung.ar in the frame of the development of the Late Palaeozoic Kazakh orocline, which led to oblique subduction and transpression in the West Jung.ar accretionary complex. Prog.essive buckling.of the Kazakh orocline further resulted in Late Carboniferous to Permian wrench tectonics, and lateral displacement of lithotectonic units. Block rotations that continued after the Late Triassic are due to diachronous intraplate reactivation. This scenario mirrors the Palaeozoic g.odynamics of the Altaid Collag.. Multiple Early Palaeozoic collisions of intra-oceanic arcs and micro continents have contributed to the formarion of the Kazakhstan Microconrinent. Since the Late Palaeozoic, subductions formed around this microcontinent and the final oblique closure of oceanic domains resulted in the transcurrent collag. of Tarim and Siberia cratons. Palaeozoic strike-slip faults were later reactivated during.Mesozoic intracontinental tectonics.

The Trans-North China Belt （TNCB） is a Paleoproterozoic collisional orog.n （ca. 1.9-1.8 g.） responsible for the amalg.mation of the North China Craton. detailed field works in Liiliang.han, Heng.han, Wutaishan and Fuping.massifs where the belt is well exposed, allow us to draw a new tectonic map and crustal-scale cross sections. The available petrolog.c, radiometric, g.ochronolog.c data are integ.ated in a g.odynamic evolution scheme for this orog.n. The Low g.ade Mafic Unit （Lg.U） is interpreted as an ophiolitic nappe rooted in a suture zone located in the western part of the Lüliang.han. This ophiolitic nappe overthrusts to the SE upon the Orthog.eiss-Volcanites Unit （OVU） that consists of a bimodal volcanic-sedimentary series metamorphosed under amphibolite facies conditions intruded by calcalkaline orthog.eiss. The OVU is a composite Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic mag.atic arc developed during.two stag.s （ca. 2500 and 2100 Ma） upon a continental basement corresponding.to the western extension of the Neoarchean Fuping.massif The OVU overthrusts to the SE the Fuping.massif along.the Long.uang.an shear zone. This stack of nappes, coeval with an amphibolite facies metamorphism, is dated at ca. 1880 Ma. Subsequently, the metamorphic series experienced a widespread mig.atization at 1850 Ma and was intruded by post-orog.nic plutons dated at 1800 Ma. The weakly to unmetamorphosed Hutuo Superg.oup unconformably overlies the metamorphosed and ductilely deformed units （OVU and Lg.U）, but it is also involved in a second tectonic phase developed in subsurface conditions. These structural features lead us to question the ca. 2090 Ma ag. attributed to the Hutuo superg.oup. Moreover, in the Fuping.massif several structural and mag.atic lines of evidence arg.e for an earlier orog.nic event at ca. 2100 Ma that we relate to an older west-directed subduction below the Fuping.Block. In the last few decades, the Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of South China has been quite controversial. The focus of debate is on both the ag. of ophiolites and the Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic g.olog.cal and g.odynamic environment. The Huaiyu domain is located in the NE part of South China and exposes numerous sig.ificant g.olog.cal features that are keys to understand the tectonics of South China. In this paper, we present some new evidence on stratig.aphy, petrolog. and SHRIMP zircon U-Pb g.ochronolog., and tog.ther with other g.olog.cal and g.ochemical data available in the literature, and the following.conclusions are sug.ested： 1） The eastern Jiang.an ophiolites belt, dated at 858±11 Ma by SHRIMP zircon U-Pb method, was g.nerated during.the Neoproterozoic, but not the Late Paleozoic; 2） The sedimentary rocks associated with these oceanic rocks do not contain radiolarians but Neoproterozoic acritarchs; 3） during.Permian-Early Triassic times, the Huaiyu domain was dominantly characterized by a shallow sea depositional environment since deep sea sediments are absent; and 4） The pre-devonian tectonics of South China has been reworked by late polyphase tectonism throug. the Triassic and the Cretaceous periods. A Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic deep marine domain floored by oceanic crust never existed in the study area. The g.ochronolog.cal and structural data do not comply with a Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic South China Ocean.
