Forest ecosystems are important for biodiversity conservation and human societies, but are under pressure due to climate change and human interventions. this applies to natural forests as well as tree plantations. the latter are globally widespread and therefore gaining increasing importance for biodiversity conservation. However, even after dieback due to increasing disturbance frequencies, such plantations are primarily managed for economic returns, leading to growing conflicts among stakeholders. In particular, the impact of forest management on biodiversity is being discussed. this study investigates the effects of five management approaches in a landscape severely affected by spruce (Picea abies L.) dieback on beetle diversity, conservation, and community composition. We considered direct effects of management and indirect effects of environmental parameters separately in ground-dwelling and flight-active beetles. Beetle diversity was strongly affected by forest management, with nonintervention deadwood stands being most beneficial for beetles. In addition, we show indirect effects of environmental factors. In general, parameters related to salvage logging (e.g. open canopies, tree stumps) influenced beetle diversity and conservation negatively, while positive effects were found for soil nutrient availability and plant species richness. community composition differed strongly among management categories and indicated a lack of landscape connectivity for open habitat species, as we found only low proportions of such species even on salvage-logged sites. We propose a mixture of management approaches after bark beetle outbreaks, including a substantial proportion of non-intervention deadwood stands, to increase landscape heterogeneity and connectivity. this may increase overall biodiversity while addressing the concerns of both forestry and species conservation.

Lithium carbon fluoride （Li°||cFx） batteries are the research hotspot amid the existing primary battery technologies,owing to their inherent safety and exceptionally theoretical energy *** the perspective of bimolecular nucleophilic substitution（SN2） reactions for the conversion process of cFxelectrode,we herein delve into the impact of borane-type Lewis acid additive,as lithium fluoride （LiF） carrier,on their discharge behavior of the Li°||cFxcells,utilizing two families of electrolytes with different electron-donicity,namely 1,2-dimethoxyethane （DME） and propylene carbonate （Pc）.the results show that the DME-based electrolytes empower the Li°||cFxcells with higher specific capacities *** corresponding Pc-based systems,irrespective of the borane-type Lewis acid additive *** highlights the central impact of electrolyte solvents （i.e.,donicity） on determining the discharge processes of ***,for the DME-based electrolytes,the addition of a few percent （0.4 wt%） of borane-type additive leads to a significant improvement in the discharge capacity,demonstrating the necessity of carrying deposited LiF particles for the electrolytes with relatively high *** work provides an explicit design concept concerning the optimization of the electrolyte configurations for further improving the electrochemical performance of Li°||cFxand related battery systems.

this review explores the research activities surrounding the development and integration of smart electricity grids in Burkina Faso, a landlocked and arid territory in West Africa and one of the poorest countries in the world with significant energy challenges. It examines the current state of energy infrastructure in Burkina Faso, focusing on the integration of renewable energy sources, particularly solar photovoltaics. It highlights the role of smart grid technologies in enabling the efficient integration of renewable energy, improving grid stability and facilitating rural electrification. Additionally, the review addresses key challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, regulatory gaps and financial constraints that hinder the deployment of smart grids in the country. By analysing existing research and ongoing projects, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and barriers to implementing a smart electricity grid in Burkina Faso and offers recommendations for future development and policy frameworks.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a bacterial pathogen for humans and animals. these bacteria can resist against many antibiotics and this resistance constitute an alarming worldwide human health threat due to the morbidity and mortality. Phage therapy is one of the alternative treatments. the aim of this study was to isolate and characterize lytic phages of S. aureus from different wastewater sources in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Eight strains of S. aureus were isolated from different clinical samples and were used to isolate phages. the isolation and host range of phages were done by the spot test. Phages were purified by the double-layer method. Similar phages after the determination of the host range were characterized using restriction enzymes. A total of 27 phages were obtained after isolation and purification. Nine of the 27 isolates reported a broad host range (≥67%). the results of enzymatic digestion allowed to consider that all phage isolates that presented the same host range and the same genetic fingerprint are the same phage strain;whereas phages that presented the same host range and different genetic fingerprints are different phage strains. thus, a total of 15 distinct phages isolates specific to S. aureus were characterized. this study highlighted the abundance and lytic capacity of phages isolated from wastewater from Bobo-Dioulasso’s environment against clinical strains of S. aureus. the lytic capacity of these Staphyphages could be an effective alternative tool to combat bacteria multi-resistance.

Resource Optimization in Elastic Optical Networks Using threshold-Based Routing and Fragmentation-Aware Spectrum Allocation

this paper proposes an efficient strategy for resource utilization in Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) to minimize spectrum fragmentation and reduce connection blocking probability during Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA). the proposed method, Dynamic threshold-Based Routing and Spectrum Allocation with Fragmentation Awareness (Dt-RSAF), integrates rerouting and spectrum defragmentation as needed. By leveraging Yen’s shortest path algorithm, Dt-RSAF enhances resource utilization while ensuring improved service continuity. A dynamic threshold mechanism enables the algorithm to adapt to varying network conditions, while its fragmentation awareness effectively mitigates spectrum fragmentation. Simulation results on NSFNEt and cOSt 239 topologies demonstrate that Dt-RSAF significantly outperforms methods such as K-Shortest Path Routing and Spectrum Allocation (KSP-RSA), Load Balanced and Fragmentation-Aware (LBFA), and the Invasive Weed Optimization-based RSA (IWO-RSA). Under heavy traffic, Dt-RSAF reduces the blocking probability by up to 15% and achieves lower Bandwidth Fragmentation Ratios (BFR), ranging from 74% to 75%, compared to 77% - 80% for KSP-RSA, 75% - 77% for LBFA, and approximately 76% for IWO-RSA. Dt-RSAF also demonstrated reasonable computation times compared to KSP-RSA, LBFA, and IWO-RSA. On a small-sized network, its computation time was 8710 times faster than that of Integer Linear Programming (ILP) on the same network topology. Additionally, it achieved a similar execution time to LBFA and outperformed IWO-RSA in terms of efficiency. these results highlight Dt-RSAF’s capability to maintain large contiguous frequency blocks, making it highly effective for accommodating high-bandwidth requests in EONs while maintaining reasonable execution times.

Introduction: Arbovirus diseases such as dengue and chikungunya threaten public health worldwide. Early and rapid diagnosis and surveillance of dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (cHIKV) infections are essential to the control of these diseases. In this study, we evaluate the diagnostic performance of our new in-house multiplex Rt-qPcR method for detecting DENV serotypes and cHIKV in an external laboratory. Methodology: the evaluation study was conducted on 200 clinical samples of suspected patients for arbovirus disease infection, collected in centre de Recherche Biomoléculaire Pietro Annigoni (cERBA), Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Our new multiplex Rt-qPcR was compared to the commercial kit, the Zika, Dengue, and chikungunya (ZDc) Real-time PcR Assays kit (Bio-Rad, california, USA). Results and conclusions: Among 200 samples, 21.5% (43/200) were DENV-positive by multiplex Rt-qPcR, and 21.5% (43/200) were also DENV-positive by reference real-time Rt-PcR. 157 (78.5%) samples tested negative for DENV by both tests (new mRt-qPcR and reference test). the sensitivity and specificity of mRt-qPcR were 100%. the DENV serotypes detected were DENV-1 60.5% (26/43) and DENV-3 39.5% (17/43). cHIKV was not detected in this study. Our new mRt-qPcR is sensitive, cost-effective, simple, and can be used in developing country laboratories.
