In the developing and adult brain, neurotrophic growth factors support the growth and protec tion of dopaminergic neuronal systems. Recently, links between impaired neurotrophin support of dopamine (DA) neurons has been described in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Fibro- blast growth factor (FGF) has a unique association with DA neurons in that FGF signaling is vitally important for the development and protection of adult DA neurons. We assessed the role of substantia nigra (SN)-expressed FGFs in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system using a transgenic mouse, th-fgfr1(tk-). In these mice, generated by expression of dominant negative FGFR1(TK-) from the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene promoter, reduced FGF signaling results in smaller and less dense adult nigrostriatal DA neurons, similar to what is observed in PD. With unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions, th-fgfr1(tk-) mice exhibited extensive unilateral nigrostriatal damage with robust spontaneous (non-drug induced) asymmetrical turning and a decreased latency to remain on the accelerating rotarod. L-DOPA remains the gold standard for PD therapy despite debilitating hyperkinetic and dyskinetic side effects. The nicotinic acetylcholine system has recently been targeted as an alternative system to combat PD motor symptoms. Nicotine effectively stimulates dopaminergic transmission in the nigrostriatal pathway and mediates movement. Using unilaterally lesioned th-fgfr1(tk-) mice, long term (11 day) oral administration of nicotine increased spontaneous bidirectional turning and increased the latency before falling from the accelerating rotarod. In a separate analysis, L-DOPA treatment reversed directionality of rotation and further deepened motor discoordination, suggesting activation of hypersensitive postsynaptic DA receptors in the denervated striata. We report an unusual example of trichoepithelioma containing giant and multinucleated cells in the epithelial compartment. The patient was a 52-year-old woman who presented with a solitary nodule on the scalp measuring 2 cm of apparently long duration. The biopsy revealed a typical trichoepithelioma. The unusual feature was the presence in some epithelial nodules of large epithelial cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and no visible nucleoli that exceed 3 to 5 times the adjacent follicular germinative cells. Often, multinucleated cells were seen. Rare nodules were almost entirely composed of giant/multinucleated *** majority of the nodules containing giant cells were situated in the deeper portion of the neoplasm. No mitoses were seen in these giant cells. No enlarged or multinucleated cells were seen in the stroma. The neoplastic epithelial cells were diffusely reactive for bcl-2, including the giant and multinucleated *** proliferating rate was low; Ki-67 stained some giant cells. CD34 stained the stroma. We believe that the focal presence of pleomorphic giant cells in trichoepithelioma has no clinical or prognostic implications and does not denote its “malignant transformation”.

The aim of this paper is to consider the problem of politicians" control of state-owned enterprises in a transforming economy. The control of a company can be treated as a choice of a strategy pursued by this company. In order to present politicians" influence on a company"s strategy, we consider the case of a firm controlled by the State Treasury (i. e., by politicians) and a company outside politicians" control, both functioning in a favorable and an unfavorable state of the economy. We propose the option-to-switch valuation model as a method of measuring politicians" private benefits of control. We illustrate the considerations using data concerning Poland"s printing industry.

Axonal sprouting in peri-infarct cortex is associated with functional recovery after stroke. With high-throughput gene expression analysis of single sprouting neurons, upregulation of α-chimaerin, a Rho GTPase-activating protein, has been identified during the initiation of axonal sprouting in somatosensory cortex after stroke of aged animals. To define the functional roles of α-chimaerin in axonal sprouting, gain-and loss-of-function strategies were employed in the present studies. We first examined the effect of α-chimaerin in axonal outgrowth of the primary neurons. Quantitative analysis indicated that α-chimaerin si RNA duplex significantly enhanced axonal outgrowth, while α-chimaerin-GFP（lentiviral constructs carrying a whole sequence of the α-chimaerin gene linked to the GFP） suppressed axonal outgrowth of the neurons in vitro compared to the controls, respectively. We further tested the role of α-chimaerin on axonal sprouting in vivo in peri-infarct cortex using a mouse photothrombotic cortical stroke model. The duplex of α-chimaerin/control si RNA or the lentiviral α-chimaerin/control-GFP was respectively injected into a region of motor cortex that mediates recovery after stroke（Li et al., Nat Neurosci 2015） at 1 week following focal cortical stroke. Animals were sacrificed 3 weeks after the si RNA or lentiviral transfection and the tissue processed in tangential cortical sections to visualize the mouse somatosensory cortical map. There was no significant difference in axonal sprouting between α-chimaerin si RNA and scrambled non-stroke mice. However, stroke animals administrated with α-chimaerin si RNA duplex shown a significant increase of axonal connections in the peri-infarct cortex in comparing with the stroke scrambled-treated mice. In contrast, axonal sprouting in α-chimaerinGFP treated group was significantly inhibited when compared to the lentiviral-GFP control group, reducing new patterns of connections in premotor and motor cortex and in first and

The paper deals with miniature actuators and scaling effect, which occurs in using of these actuators. Scaling effect describes how much decreased performance in miniaturized actuator is. Scaling effect law helps to make perfect decision for right type of actuator. This analysis should be as the first strategic step for actuator selection. Research in area of in-pipe machine shows that scaling effect in both used actuator types (electromagnetic and piezoelectric) is the same. Passive forces cannot be neglected, because of their values, which are comparable with active forces in system. There is a potential risk, that designed system will have bigger passive forces than active forces and system cannot fulfill requirements. Energy sources selection has also important role in system design with respecting the energy requirements of selected actuator. Consequently, energy balance is also important viewpoint for actuator selection.

This paper presents the methodology and results of modelling of Earth magnetic field disturbances induced by ferromagnetic objects. The modeling was carried out using the finite elements calculations, and the results were compared with the measurements. The special test stand, consisting of magnetovision scanner and Helmholtz coils, has been used. The measurement system is able to measure the distribution of planar magnetic induction vectors, and to differentiate the sources of measured disturbances.
