In this p.p.r, a methodology for the numerical location of a global p.int-to-p.int (p.p.for short) homoclinic asymp.otically connecting orbit is ap.lied to a modified version of Shimizu-Morioka system, which models a semiconductor laser. This typ. of global bifurcation can be considered as a stylized mathematical descrip.ion of self-p.lsation in this laser typ., associ-ated with saturation. The location is achieved by use of a custom algorithm based on the method of orthogonal collocation on finite elements with fourth order boundary conditions, constructed through scale order ap.roximations. The effectiveness of the algorithm and the sup.riority of high-order boundary conditions over the widely used first order ones are justified throughout the obtained grap.ical results.

AIM： To evaluate whether the cellular p.oliferation rate in the large bowel ep.thelial cells is characterized by circadian rhythm. METHODS： Between January 2003 and December 2004, twenty p.tients who were diagnosed as suffering from p.imary, resectable, non-metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lower rectum, infiltrating the sp.incter mechanism, underwent abdominop.rineal resection, total mesorectal excision and p.rmanent left iliac colostomy. In formalinfixed and p.raffin-embedded biop.y sp.cimens obtained from the colostomy mucosa every six hours （00：00, 06：00, 12：00, 18：00 and 24：00）, we studied the exp.ession of G1 p.ase cyclins （D1 and E） as well as the exp.ession of the G1 p.ase cyclin-dep.ndent kinase （CDK） inhibitors p.6 and p.1 as indicators of cell cycle p.ogres- sion in colonic ep.thelial cells using immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS： The exp.ession of both cyclins showed a similar circadian fashion obtaining their lowest and highest values at 00：00 and 18：00, resp.ctively （p. 0.001）. A circadian rhythm in the exp.ession of CDK inhibitor p.oteins p.6 and p.1 was also observed, with the lowest levels obtained at 12：00 and 18：00 （p.0.001）, resp.ctively. When the comp.exes cyclins D1-p.1 and E-p.1 were examined, the exp.ession of the cyclins was adversely correlated to the p.1 exp.ession throughout the day. When the comp.exes the cyclins D1-p.6 and E-p.6 were examined, high levels of p.6 exp.ession were correlated to low levels of cyclin exp.ession at 00：00, 06：00 and 24：00. Meanwhile, the highest exp.ession levels of both cyclins were correlated to high levels of p.6 exp.ession at 18：00. CONCLUSION： Colonic ep.thelial cells seem to enter the G1 p.ase of the cell cycle during afternoon （between 12：00 and 18：00） with the highest rates obtained at 18：00. From a clinical p.int of view, the p.esent results suggest that G1-p.ase sp.cific anticancer therap.es in afternoon might maximize their anti-tumor effect while minimizing toxicity.
