Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived therapies for regeneration after central nervous system injury

Impact of surface hydroxylation in MgO-/SnO-nanocluster modified TiO_2 anatase(101) composites on visible light absorption, charge separation and reducibility

Surface modification with metal oxide nanoclusters has emerged as a candidate for the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide. An increase in visible light absorption and the suppression of charge carrier recombination are necessary to improve the efficiency. We have studied Mg4O4 and Sn4O4 nanoclusters modifying the（101） surface of anatase TiO2 using density functional theory corrected for on-site Coulomb interactions（DFT ＋ U）. Such studies typically focus on the pristine surface, free of the point defects and surface hydroxyls present in real surfaces. We have also examined the impact of partial hydroxylation of the anatase surface on a variety of outcomes such as nanocluster adsorption, light absorption, charge separation and reducibility. Our results indicate that the modifiers adsorb strongly at the surface, irrespective of the presence of hydroxyl groups, and that modification extends light absorption into the visible range while enhancing UV activity. Our model for the excited state of the heterostructures demonstrates that photoexcited electrons and holes are separated onto the TiO2 surface and metal oxide nanocluster respectively. Comparisons with bare TiO2 and other TiO2-based photocatalyst materials are presented throughout.

Dyeing of Polypropylene Fibers with Vat Dyes

Polypropylene fibers have been extensively used in a variety of/products, including carpets and upholstery, due to their non-absorbency, good weather resistance, good resistance to macroorgamsms and so on. Because of their hydrophobic and highly crystalline nature, those well-established conventionai dyeing processes are difficult to apply to unmodified polypropylene. Colors of polypropylene fibers are primarily obtained by mass coloration which has the disadvantages of limited number of colors available and difficulties in inventory control due to the rapidly changing color needs of the market. In this paper, the use of vat dyes to dye polypropylene fabrics is investigated. Seventeen vat dyes were screened and factors influencing uptake of dyes by polypropylene fabrics were studied.

Heterogeneous activity causes a nonlinear increase in the group energy use of ant workers isolated from queen and brood

Increasing evidence has shown that the energy use of ant colonies increases sublinearly with colony size so that large colonies consume less per capita energy than small colonies. It has been postulated that social environment （e.g., in the presence of queen and brood） is critical for the sublinear group energetics, and a few studies of ant workers isolated from queens and brood observed linear relationships between group energetics and size. In this paper, we hypothesize that the sublinear energetics arise from the heterogeneity of activity in ant groups, that is, large groups have relatively more inactive members than small groups. We further hypothesize that the energy use of ant worker groups that are allowed to move freely increases more slowly than the group size even if they are isolated from queen and brood. Previous studies only provided indirect evidence for these hypotheses due to technical difficulties. In this study, we applied the automated behavioral monitoring and respirometry simultaneously on isolated worker groups for long time periods, and analyzed the image with the state-of-the-art algorithms. Our results show that when activity was not confined, large groups had lower per capita energy use, a lower percentage of active members, and lower average walking speed than small groups; while locomotion was confined, however, the per capita energy use was a constant regardless of the group size. The quantitative analysis shows a direct link between variation in group energy use and the activity level of ant workers when isolated from queen and brood.
