s.lf-referent phenotype matching and its.role in female mate choice in arthropods

A growing body of empirical evidence s.ows.that females.of many animal s.ecies.gain benefits.by mating polyandrous.y, and often prefer to mate with novel males.over previous.mates. Although a female preference for novel males.has.been demons.rated for multiple animal taxa, the mechanis.s.us.d by females.to dis.riminate between novel and previous.mates.remain largely unknown. However, recent s.udies.s.gges. that in decorated crickets.ryllodes.s.gillatus. females.actually imbue males.with their own chemical cues. known as.cuticular hydrocarbons.(CHCs. during mating, and utilize chemos.ns.ry s.lf-referencing to recognize recent mates. Here we review evidence that s.lf-referent phenotype matching is.a wides.read mechanis. of recognition in arthropods. and explore how CHCs.are us.d to facilitate mate-choice decis.ons. There is.s.bs.antial evidence that CHCs.are us.d as.recognition cues.to dis.riminate between s.ecies. kin, s.xes. mates. individuals. and s.lf and non-s.lf, and are us.d to facilitate mate-choice decis.ons.in a wide range of arthropod taxa. There is.als. evidence that CHCs.are often trans.erred between individuals.during direct phys.cal contact, including copulation. Chemos.ns.ry s.lf-referencing via cuticular hydrocarbons.could provide a s.mple, but reliable mechanis. for identifying individuals.from previous.mating encounters. This.mechanis. does.not require any s.ecialized cognitive abilities.becaus. an individual’s.phenotype is.always.available for reference. Given the ubiquitous.us. of CHCs.among arthropods. chemos.ns.ry s.lf-referencing may be a wides.read mechanis. us.d by female arthropods.to facilitate female mate-choice decis.ons.and to enhance opportunities.for polyandry.
