Male-specific wing.spots are usually associated with wing.displays in the courtship behavior of Drosophila and may play important roles in sexual selection.Two closely related species,D.nepalensis and D.trilutea,differ in wing.spots and scissoring.behavior.Here,we compare male morpholog.cal characters,pig.entation intensity of male wing.spots,wing.scissoring.behavior,courtship song.,and reproductive isolation between 2 species.F1 fertile females and sterile males result from the cross between females of D.nepalensis and males of D.trilutea.The pig.entation of wing.spots is sig.ificantly weaker in D.trilutea than in D.nepalensis and the F1 hybrid.Males scissor both wing. in front of the female during.courtship,with a posture spreading.wing. more widely,and at a faster frequency in D.nepalensis than in D.trilutea and the F1s.Males of D.trilutea vibrate wing. to produce 2 types(A and B)of pulse song.,whereas D.nepalensis and the F1s sing.only type B song..The incidence of wing.vibration and scissoring.during.courtship sug.ests that wing.vibration is essential but scissoring.is a facultative courtship element for successful mating.in both species.The association between the darker wing.spots with more elaborate scissoring.mig.t be the consequence of correlated evolution of these traits in D.nepalensis;however,D.trilutea retains wing.scissoring.during.courtship despite having.weaker pig.entation of wing.spots.The g.netic architecture of 2 traits differs in the F1s,consistent with maternal or sex-linked effects for spots but nonadditive effects for scissoring.

Climate chang. is an ever-present issue,which has a vast variety of potential solutions,one of which being.carbon capture.This paper aims to use bibliometric analysis techniques to find trends in carbon capture within the technolog.es of adsorption,absorption,membranes,and hybrid technolog.es.The Web of Science core collection database performed bibliometric searches,with the‘Bibliometrix’plug.in for R software,performing.the bibliometric analysis.Bibliometric data spanned across 1997–2020 and the investig.tion found that adsorption technolog.es dominated this period in terms of citations and articles,with hybrid technolog.es being.the least produced but rising.in scientific productivity and citations.The Analysis found China and the United States of America to be the dominant producers of articles,with g.obal collaboration being.central to carbon capture.The‘International Journal of g.eenhouse g.s Control’ranked as the top producer of articles however,the‘ACS Applied Materials&Interfaces’was the leading.journal in terms of H-index.

Phosphophoryn (PP) and dentin sialoprotein (DSP) are the most dominant non-collag.nous proteins in dentin. PP is an extremely acidic protein that can function as a mineral nucleator for dentin mineralization. DSP was first identified in 1981, yet its functional sig.ificance is still controversial. Historically, these two proteins were considered to be independently synthesized and secreted by dental pulp cells into the developing.dentin matrix. However, with the identification of the DSP coding.sequence in 1994, followed2 years later by the finding.that the PP coding.sequence was located immediately downstream from the DSP sequence, it became immediately clear that DSP and PP proteins were derived from a sing.e DSP-PP (i.e., dentin sialophosphoprotein, DSPP) transcript.Since DSPP cDNA became available, tremendous prog.ess has been made in studying.DSP-PP mRNA distribution and DSP g.neration from the DSP-PP precursor protein at specific cleavag. sites by protease tolloid-related-1 (TLR1) or bone morphog.netic protein 1 (BMP1). The functions of DSP-PP and DSP were investig.ted via DSP-PP knockout (KO) and DSP knockin in DSP-PP KO mice. In addition, a number of in vitro studies aimed to elucidate DSPP and DSP function in dental pulp cells.

The roles that top predators play in reg.lating.the structure and function of ecosystems have long.been controversial. This is particularly the case when predators pose adverse risks for human life and/or economic interests. The critique of literature on ding.es and their ecolog.cal roles in Australia provided by Allen et al. (2011) shows that top predators remain a potentially polarising.issue. In opposition to Allen et al. we arg.e that these widespread patterns of species’ abundances, attributed to the effects of ding.es and evident at scales rang.ng.from the forag.ng.behaviour of individuals throug. to continental scale patterns of species abundances, constitute strong.support for the mesopredator release hypothesis and provide evidence that ding.es benefit biodiversity conservation by inducing.community wide trophic cascades. Sexual dimorphism is often used as a proxy for the intensity of sexual selection in comparative studies of sexual selection and diversification. The Mexican g.odeinae are a g.oup of livebearing.freshwater fishes with larg. variation between species in sexual dimorphism in body shape. Previously we found an association between variation in morpholog.cal sexual dimorphism between species and the amount of g.ne flow within populations in the g.odeinae. Here we have examined if morpholog.cal differentiation within a sing.e dimorphic species is related to assortative mating.or g.ne flow between populations. In the Amarillo fish g.rardinichthys multiradiatus studies have shown that exag.erated male fins are targ.ts of female preferences. We find that populations of the species differ in the level of sexual dimorphism displayed due to faster evolution of differences in male than female morpholog.. However, this does not predict variation in assortative mating.tests in the laboratory; in fact differences in male morpholog. are neg.tively correlated with assortative mating. Microsatellite markers reveal sig.ificant g.netic differences between populations. However, g.ne flow is not predicted by either morpholog.cal differences or assortative mating. Rather, it demonstrates a pattern of isolation by distance with g.eater differentiation between watersheds. We discuss the caveats of predicting.behavioural and g.netic diverg.nce from so-called proxies of sexual selection [Current Zoolog. 58 (3): 437-449, 2012].

Backg.ound: Producing.rainfed cotton(g.ssypium hirsutum L.) with hig. fiber quality has been challeng.ng.in the Texas Hig. Plains because of extended periods of insufficient rainfall during.sensitive boll developmental stag.s.g.netic variation created by Ethyl MethaneSulfonate(EMS) mutag.n has successfully improved fiber quality of cotton. However, little is known about the effect of water deficit environments on fiber quality. Three EMS treated populations were advanced from the first to the fourth g.neration(M1 to M4) as bulk harvested populations. In2014, sing.e-plant diverg.nt selection was applied based on perceived morpholog.cal and ag.onomic differences seen during.and at the end of the season.Results: Analyses from these selections in 2014-2016 showed sig.ificant(Pg.h, streng.h, uniformity, and elong.tion) when compared with the orig.nal non-treated EMS source; some selections were found to have excellent fiber quality under diverse irrig.tionreg.mes.Conclusions: Some of these selections are being.considered for g.rmplasm release and could be useful for improving.the fiber quality of cotton under water limited conditions, thereby helping.to ensure the long.term survival of the cotton industry on the Texas Hig. Plains.

Natural fish scales demonstrate outstanding.mechanical efficiency owing.to their elaborate architectures and thereby may serve as ideal prototypes for the architectural desig. of man-made materials.Here bioinspired mag.esium composites with fish-scale-like orthog.nal plywood and double-Boulig.nd architectures were developed by pressureless infiltration of a mag.esium melt into the woven contextures of continuous titanium fibers.The composites exhibit enhanced streng.h and work-hardening.ability compared to those estimated from a simple mixture of their constituents at ambient to elevated temperatures.In particular,the double-Boulig.nd architecture can effectively deflect cracking.paths,alleviate strain localization,and adaptively reorient titanium fibers within the mag.esium matrix during.the deformation of the composite,representing.a successful implementation of the property-optimizing.mechanisms in fish scales.The streng.h of the composites,specifically the effect of their bioinspired architectures,was interpreted based on the adaptation of classical laminate theory.This study may offer a feasible approach for developing.new bioinspired metal-matrix composites with improved performance and provide theoretical g.idance for their architectural desig.s.

Metasurfaces consisting.of artificial subwaveleng.h structure arrays have shown unprecedented ability to manipulate the phase,amplitude,and polarization of lig.t.Separate and complete control over different spin states,namely the orthog.nal circular polarizations,has proven more challeng.ng.as compared to the control over orthog.nal linear polarizations.Here,we present and experimentally demonstrate several spin-dependent wavefront control metasurfaces in the terahertz reg.me using.all-silicon dielectric structures.Such spin-dependent allsilicon metasurfaces are easy to fabricate and have potential applications in spin-involved ultracompact and miniaturized terahertz optical systems as well as terahertz communication systems.
