Valuable Biomolecules from Nine North Atlantic Red Macroalgae: Amino Acids, Fatty Acids, Carotenoids, Minerals and Metals

In modern society, novel marine resources are scrutinized pursuing compounds of use in the medical, pharmaceutical, biotech, food or feed industry. Few of the numerous marine macroalgae are currently exploited. In this study, the contents of nutritional compounds from nine common North Atlantic red macroalgae were compared: the lipid content was low and constant among the species, whereas the fatty acid profiles indicated that these species constitute interesting sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The dominating essential and non-essential amino acids were lysine and leucine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and arginine, respectively. The amino acid score of the nine algae varied from 44% to 92%, the most commonly first limiting amino acid being histidine. Lutein, β-carotene, and zeaxanthin were the identified carotenoids. Contents of all macro and trace minerals, with the exception of phosphorus, were higher than those described for conventional food. Low sodium/potassium ratios (0.08 - 2.54) suggested a potential for using the ash fraction for sodium salt replacement. The algae constituted rich sources of carbohydrates (40% to 71% of DM) which show their potential for a broader commercial exploitation. In some species, the concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and lead exceeded limit values for application in food or feed. In conclusion, the nine algae represent promising potential sources of health promoting additives for human and animal diets, in whole or in a biorefinery concept.

Effects of centralized and local PV plant control for voltage regulation in LV feeder based on cyber-physical simulations

In the modern power system, both local and centralized reactive power control strategies for photovoltaic(PV) plants, are proposed and compared. While local control improves the network security, it lacks the optimization benefits from centralized control ***, this paper considers the coordination of the two control strategies, depending on external impact from the weather system and consumer behavior, in a low voltage(LV) distribution feeder. Through modeling and simulation in an established real-time cyber-physical simulation platform, the LV network is evaluated with both local and centralized control. A set of boundaries for coordinating between the two strategies are identified, which can help network operators decide suitable control in different operating situations. Furthermore, the cyber-physical simulation platform, is used to study the impact of physical perturbations, i.e. changes in irradiance and consumption,and cyber disturbances, in form of communication channel noise, is evaluated for the control strategies. Results show how small and large disturbances in the cyber system affect the centralized control strategy optimizer performance.

Development of precision medicine approaches based on inter-individual variability of BCRP/ABCG2

Precision medicine is a rapidly-developing modality of medicine in human *** on each patient’s unique characteristics, more accurate dosages and drug selection can be made to achieve better therapeutic efficacy and less adverse reactions in precision medicine. A patient’s individual parameters that affect drug transporter action can be used to develop a precision medicine guidance, due to the fact that therapeutic efficacy and adverse reactions of drugs can both be affected by expression and function of drug transporters on the cell membrane surface. The purpose of this review is to summarize unique characteristics of human breast cancer resistant protein(BCRP) and the genetic variability in the BCRP encoded gene ABCG2 in the development of precision medicine. Inter-individual variability of BCRP/ABCG2 can impact choices and outcomes of drug treatment for several diseases, including cancer chemotherapy. Several factors have been implicated in expression and function of BCRP, including genetic, epigenetic, physiologic,pathologic, and environmental factors. Understanding the roles of these factors in controlling expression and function of BCRP is critical for the development of precision medicine based on BCRP-mediated drug transport.

Raman spectroscopy monitors adverse bone sequelae of cancer radiotherapy

Raman spectroscopy provides information on bone chemical composition and structure via widely used metrics including mineral to matrix ratio, mineral crystallinity and carbonate content, collagen cross- linking ratio and depolarization ratios. These metrics are correlated with bone material properties, such as hardness, plasticity and Young＇s modulus. We review application of Raman spectroscopy to two important irradiated animal models： the mouse tibia, a model for damage to cortical bone sites including the rib （breast cancer） and to healthy tissue adjacent to extremity sarcomas, and the rat mandible, a model for radiation damage in head and neck cancer radiotherapy. Longitudinal studies of irradiated mouse tibia demonstrate that radiation-induced matrix abnormalities can persist even 26 weeks post- radiation. Polarized Raman spectroscopy shows formation of more ordered orientation of both mineral and collagen. At 8 weeks post-radiation, irradiated rat hemimandible exhibits transient hyperminer- alization, increased collagen cross-linking and decreased depolarization ratios of mineral and collagen. A standard radioprotectant, amifostine, mitigates rat mandible radiation damage, with none remaining detectable 18 weeks post-radiation. Already a powerful tool to monitor radiation damage, Raman spectroscopy may be important in development of new radiotherapy protocols and radioprotective agents. Further in vfvo studies of radiation effects on the rodent models are underway, as are development of methodologies for eventual use in human subjects.

Synergistic effect of cobalt and niobium in Co_(3)-Nb-O_(x)on performance of selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH_(3)

Combining the redox properties of Co and the acid properties of Nb in a Co_(3)-Nb-O_(x)catalyst is shown to provide superior performance in the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH_(3)(NH_(3)-SCR).Co_(3)O_(4)shows average activity,however,it exhibits a poor N_(2)***_(2)O_(5)is not active for NH_(3)-***,the mixed Co_(3)-Nb-O_(x) catalyst shows higher NO conversion and N_(2)selectivity than the single Co_(3)O_(4)and Nb_(2)O_(5)catalysts at 100–300℃.The results of temperature programmed reduction by H_(2)and X-ray photoelectron(XP)spectra indicate that the addition of Nb changes the chemical states of Co and decreases the concentration of Co^(3+) and Oa,adjusting the activity for catalytic oxidation to a moderate *** suppresses the formation of undesired N_(2)O from the over-oxidation of NH_(3).Incorporation of Co and Nb into one solid synergistically couples their redox behavior and surface acidity,ensuring the high catalytic activity and N2 selectivity in NH3-SCR.

Synergistic effects of vegetation layers of maize and potato intercropping on soil erosion on sloping land in Yunnan Province, China

Intercropping, as an overyielding system, can decrease soil erosion on sloping land through the presence of dense canopy covers. However, the structure mechanism in canopy is still unclear. We conducted a two-year field experiment on runoff plots, exploring whether the interaction between vegetation layers reduce soil erosion in maize and potato intercropping systems. The maize, potato, and weed layers in the intercropping system were removed by a single layer, two layers and three layers, respectively(total of 8 treatments including all layers removed as the control). Then, throughfall, runoff and sediment were measured at the plot and row scale on a weekly basis. Based on the difference between each treatment and the control, we calculated and found a relative reduction of runoff and sediment by any combination of the two vegetation layers greater than the sum of each single layer. In 2016 and 2017, the highest relative reduction of runoff reached 15.65% and 46.73%, respectively. Sediment loss decreased by 33.96% and 42.77%, respectively. Moreover, runoffand sediment reduced by the combination of all vegetation layers(no layers removed) was also larger than the sum of that by each single layer. In 2016 and 2017, the highest relative reduction of runoff reached 7.32% and 3.48%, respectively. So, there were synergistic effects among multi-level(two or three layers) vegetation layers in terms of decreasing soil erosion on sloping land. Maize redistributes more throughfall at the maize intra-specific row and the maize and potato inter-specific, which is favorable for the synergistic effect of reducing soil erosion. This finding shows an important mechanism of maize and potato intercropping for soil and water conservation, and may promote the application of diverse cropping systems for sustainable agriculture in mountainous areas.

Accuracy of abdominal auscultation for bowel obstruction

AIM:To investigate the accuracy and inter-observer variation of bowel sound assessment in patients with clinically suspected bowel ***:bowel sounds were recorded in patients with suspected bowel obstruction using a Littmann® Electronic Stethoscope. The recordings were processed to yield 25-s sound sequences in random order on PCs. Observers,recruited from doctors within the department,classified the sound sequences as either normal or pathological. The reference tests for bowel obstruction were intraoperative and endoscopic findings and clinical follow up. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for each observer and compared between junior and senior doctors. Interobserver variation was measured using the Kappa ***:bowel sound sequences from 98 patients were assessed by 53(33 junior and 20 senior) doctors. Laparotomy was performed in 47 patients,35 of whom had bowel obstruction. Two patients underwent colorectal stenting due to large bowel obstruction. The median sensitivity and specificity was 0.42(range:0.19-0.64) and 0.78(range:0.35-0.98),respectively. T h e re wa s n o s i g n i f i c a n t d i ffe re n c e i n a cc u ra c y between junior and senior doctors. The median frequency with which doctors classified bowel sounds as abnormal did not differ significantly between patients with and without bowel obstruction(26% vs 23%,P = 0.08). The 53 doctors made up 1378 unique pairs and the median Kappa value was 0.29(range:-0.15-0.66).CONCLUSION:Accuracy and inter-observer agreement was generally low. Clinical decisions in patients with possible bowel obstruction should not be based on auscultatory assessment of bowel sounds.
