During the International Tapir Symposium 16-21 Oct 2011,the conservation of Baird's tapir(Tapirus baindi)in Honduras received a boost w.th the signing of a memorandum of understanding betw.en the Minister Direc-tor of the Honduran Instute of Conservation and Forestry(CF)and the Tapir Specialist Group(TSG)Despite this agreement,accelerating levels of hunting and habitat loss contimue to pose a threat to Baird's tapir in *** ongoing study in Cusuco National Park in northw.stern Honduras has been monitoring changes in population dynamics of Baird's tapir since 2006 through the collection of occupancy *** study has iden-tified an increase in hunting pressure,coinciding w.th a drastic decline in the encounter rate w.th Baird's tapir ***,w. examine the significance of a range of demographic variables on Baird's tapir occupancy in Cu-suco National Park using the softw.re PRESENCE,and simulate the effects of different management strategies on the fiuture dynamics of the population using the stochastic simulation softw.re VORTEX The predictions of the theoretical population models are compared to observed changes in occupancy *** found that non-intervention resulted in the local extinction of Baird's tapir w.thin a very short time fiame,but that various in-tervention models enabled the population to recover to near carrying *** and extinction prob-ability w.re show. to respond marlkedly to the increase in hunting pressure;and occupancy models supported the fiuture population predictions generated by *** study suggests that immediate intervention is re-quired to reduce hunting pressure to near historical levels to prevent the imminent 1ocal extinction of the species.

Domestic ruminants on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau reflect a combination of autochthonous populations and those that have been selected to improve *** the region’s dominant livestock species-the yak(Bos grunniens),a major feature of production development is the increasing use of cattle-yak hybrids,yet these hybrids and their genetic architecture have rarely been *** compared the genetic architecture of the yak,cattle and dzo using a w.ole genome resequencing strategy.A total of 33.17 M SNPs w.s detected,w.th 91.23%of SNPs compared betw.en the dzo and cattle(Bos taurus)reference genome being *** male dzo are reproductively sterile,w. studied variation in the Y chromosome and male sterility-related genes found on the *** could not find genetic signatures associated w.th sterility on the dzo Y chromosome,our results instead implicating autosomal control,and especially the DMC1 *** also found a large number of repeat sequences on both ends of the bovine Y chromosomes,w.ich mainly distributed in intergenic and introns *** repetitive sequences w.uld be the result of the Y chromosome evolution;they may have played an important role in preventing chromosome recombination in the formation process of Y chromosome,and protected the important single copy genes on both ends of the Y chromosome.A variant(Chromosomel 1.286641870T)in the EPAS1 gene in yak w.s predicted to be deleterious by SIFT w.ich is potentially important because EPAS1 is a key gene related to altitude adaptation in *** of grow.h and milk related genes betw.en yak and cattle,indicating no difference in grow.h hormone and prolactin ***,variations in grow.h hormone and prolactin receptor genes may be the important causes to explain the difference of milk and meat production among cattle,yak and *** analysis results among zebu,yak and cattle genome sequences show.d that there w.re huge differences among the three ***
