Background: Immune dysfunction and a higher risk of uterine infections are characteristics of the transition into lactation in dairy cows. the supply of complexed trace minerals, which are more bioavailable, could help overcome the greater needs of these nutrients in tissues around parturition and early ***: twenty Holstein cows received an oral bolus with a mix of inorganic trace minerals(INO) or complexed trace minerals(AAC) to achieve 75, 65, 11, and 1 ppm supplemental Zn, Mn, Cu, and Co, respectively, in the total diet dry matter from -30 d through +30 d relative to parturition. Blood for polymorphonuclear leukocyte(PMNL) isolation was collected at-30,-15, +10, and + 30 d relative to parturition, whereas endometrium biopsies were performed at +14 and +30 d. Feeding AAC led to greater PMNL expression of genes related with inflammation response(DDX58), oxidative stress response(MPO), eicosanoid metabolism(PLA2G4A and ALOX5AP), transcription regulation(PPARG), and cellular adhesion(tLN1). the upregulation by AAC in endometrium of genes related with inflammation response( tLR2, tLR4, NFKB1, tNF, IL6, IL1 B, IL10, IL8), prostaglandin synthesis(PtGS2, PtGES), and antioxidant responses(NFE2 L2, SOD1) indicated a faster remodeling of uterine tissue and potentially greater capacity to control a local bacterial ***: Data indicate that trace mineral supplementation from amino acid complexes improves PMNL activity and allows the prompt recovery of uterine tissue during early lactation. As such, the benefits of complexed trace minerals extend beyond an improvement of liver function and productive performance.

Over the past decade,the presence of mistletoe(Viscum album ***)in Scots pine stands has increased in many European *** the factors that influence the occurrence of mistletoe in stands is key to making appropriate forest management decisions to limit damage and prevent the spread of mistletoe in the ***,the main objective of this study was to determine the probability of mistletoe occurrence in Scots pine stands in relation to stand-related endogenous factors such as age,top height,and stand density,as well as topographic and edaphic *** used unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery from 2,247 stands to detect mistletoe in Scots pine stands,while majority stand and site characteristics were calculated from airborne laser scanning(ALS)*** on stand age and site type from the State Forest database were also *** found that mistletoe infestation in Scots pine stands is influenced by stand and site *** documented that the densest,tallest,and oldest stands were more susceptible to mistletoe *** type and specific microsite conditions associated with topography were also important factors driving mistletoe *** addition,climatic water balance was a significant factor in increasing the probability of mistletoe occurrence,which is important in the context of predicted temperature increases associated with climate *** results are important for better understanding patterns of mistletoe infestation and ecosystem functioning under climate *** an era of climate change and technological development,the use of remote sensing methods to determine the risk of mistletoe infestation can be a very useful tool for managing forest ecosystems to maintain forest sustainability and prevent forest disturbance.

Adsorption and reduction of platinum(Ⅳ) chloride complex ions on activated carbon

the adsorption kinetics of platinum（IV） chloride complex ions on the activated carbon Norit GF40 was investigated. Experiments were carried out at different initial concentrations of Pt（IV） chloride complex ions, temperature, rate of mixing and pH. It was found that the value of activation energy of the studied process is equal to 19.7 kJ/mol. From the ICP MS analysis it was confirmed that platinum ions （Pt（IV） and Pt（II）） are removed from the solution due to the adsorption and are further reduced to the metallic state. Such mechanism was confirmed by XPS analysis which showed that on the carbon surface three forms of platinum species, i.e. Pt（0）, Pt（II） and Pt（IV）, exist. the presence of platinum in the solution at different oxidation states was also confirmed spectrophotometrically by identification of their characteristic absorption bands. the metallic form of Pt present on the surface of activated carbon was observed in the form of small spherical islands with the diameter not exceeding 500 nm. those islands consist of smaller, flake-shape particles with a thickness of about 35 nm.

Assessment of ghrelin and leptin receptor levels in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy

Objective： In postmenopausal women, an increased leptin concentration and reduced levels of ghrelin and adiponectin were observed. the aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of the active form of ghrelin, total ghrelin, leptin receptor, lipoprotein（a）（Lp（a））, and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 （PAl-l） in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy （MHt）. Methods： the study involved 76 healthy women： 46 women aged from 44 to 58 years who received oral （26） or transdermal （20） MHt; the control group consisted of 30 women aged from 44 to 54 years who did not receive MHt. the plasma concentrations of total ghrelin, the active form of ghrelin, Lp（a）, and PAI-I：Ag were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA）. the concentration of the leptin receptor was measured by enzyme immunometric assay （EIA）. Results： We observed a significantly higher concentration o~ total ghrelin and the active form of ghrelin in women who received transdermal MHt in comparison with those who took oral MHt. We also found a significantly lower concentration of total ghrelin in women who received oral MHt compared with the control group. A higher concentration of PAl-1 ：Ag was found in the group of women who took transdermal MHt in comparison with those who took oral MHt and with the control group. the differences were statistically significant. Additionally, we found a significant negative correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and PAl-1 ：Ag and a positive correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and leptin receptor in women who received transdermal MHt. Conclusions： the study showed that women who used transdermal MHt had higher levels of total ghrelin than women who took oral MHt. this indicates a beneficial effect of the transdermal route of MHt. In this paper, two new sandwich algorithms for the convex curve approximation are introduced. the proofs of the linear convergence property of the first method and the quadratic convergence property of the second method are given. the methods are applied to approximate the efficient frontier of the stochastic minimum cost flow problem with the moment bicriterion. two numerical examples including the comparison of the proposed algorithms with two other literature derivative free methods are given.

A preliminary evaluation of VEGF-A, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 in patients with well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus

Objective： Decompensated chronic hyperglycemia often leads to late microvascular complications such as retinopathy, diabetic foot syndrome, and diabetic kidney disease. the aim of this study was to determine the concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor A （VEGF-A） and its receptors in patients with well-controlled diabetes. Methods： the study was conducted on 31 patients with well-controlled type 2 diabetes without microor macroangiopathy. thirty healthy volunteers were enrolled in a control group. Serum concentrations of VEGF-A, VEGF receptors 1 and 2 （VEGFR1 and VEGFR2）, fasting glucose, and lipid profiles were measured, and the plasma concentration of glycated hemoglobin （HbAlc） was determined. Results： No significant differences were observed between the concentration of VEGF-A, VEGFR1 or VEGFR2 in the subject group and that in the control group. Positive correlations were noted between the levels of VEGF-A, VEGFR2, and triglyceride, and there was a negative correlation between the levels of VEGFR2 and high-density lipoprotein （HDL）-cholesterel in the study group. Conclusions： the concentrations of VEGF-A and its receptors 1 and 2 in patients with well-controlled diabetes are comparable to those of healthy individuals, which may indicate that appropriate control of glucose levels delays the occurrence of vascular complications. A negative correlation between VEGFR2 and HDL-cholesterol levels, and positive correlations between VEGF-A, VEGFR2, and triglyceride levels, suggest that lipid abnormalities occurring in diabetes may be involved in the modulation of angiogenesis.

Background: Over the last decades, many forest simulators have been developed for the forests of individual European countries. the underlying growth models are usually based on national datasets of varying size, obtained from National Forest Inventories or from long-term research plots. Many of these models include country-and location-specific predictors, such as site quality indices that may aggregate climate, soil properties and topography effects. Consequently, it is not sensible to compare such models among countries, and it is often impossible to apply models outside the region or country they were developed for. However, there is a clear need for more generically applicable but still locally accurate and climate sensitive simulators at the European scale, which requires the development of models that are applicable across the European continent. the purpose of this study is to develop tree diameter increment models that are applicable at the European scale, but still locally accurate. We compiled and used a dataset of diameter increment observations of over 2.3 million trees from 10 National Forest Inventories in Europe and a set of 99 potential explanatory variables covering forest structure, weather, climate, soil and nutrient ***: Diameter increment models are presented for 20 species/species groups. Selection of explanatory variables was done using a combination of forward and backward selection methods. the explained variance ranged from10% to 53% depending on the species. Background： Pathology of an internal organ causes significant rectification of electrical currents （diode phenomenon） in related skin areas once the resistance ＇breakthrough effect＇ has been induced in the skin. Objective： Localization of auricular projection area of the liver and evaluation of its usefulness in the monitoring of viral hepatitis. Design, Patients and Setting： Comparative study of the degree of electrical rectification measured at various spots in the auricular concha region, in 19 inpatients with hepatitis B and 15 clinically healthy volunteers, at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Provincial teaching Hospital, tychy, Poland. Intervention： Evaluation of electrical rectification at various spots on the auricular concha using a ＂rectification ratio＂ that quantifies the degree of rectification （normal range： 0-60%）. Main outcome measure： the location of the skin area where a statistically significant difference existed between the rectification ratios was observed in patients （82±12% at the time of the ＇peak period＇） versus controls （42±8%）. Results： A location was identified on the ear auricle where the electrical rectification phenomenon demonstrated a dependence on the presence of hepatitis. Conclusions： Liver projection area exists on the ear auricle which is located within the region of cymba conchae, next to anthelix and the cavity of concha. the existence of viral hepatitis causes this skin area to show a higher degree of electrical rectification once the skin resistance ＇breakthrough effect＇ has been induced. Evaluation of the rectification phenomenon of the liver proiection area provides a method of non-invasive monitoring of viral hepatitis.

Gastrointestinal side effects in children with Wilson's disease treated with zinc sulphate

AIM:to investigate the side effects of a zinc sulphate therapy in a cohort of Polish pediatric patients with Wilson's disease. MEtHODS:We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 53 pediatric patients with Wilson's disease treated at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw, Poland between the years 1996 and 2011 with zinc sulphate. Patients were diagnosed with Wilson's disease according to the scoring system of Ferenci, with 49 cases confirmed by mutation analysis. Data about the dosage scheme of zinc sulphate, side effects and efficacy and toxicity of the treatment were collected and recorded in the patient's medical chart at each visit to the hospital. RESULtS:Mean age of diagnosis for the entire cohort was 10 years (range, 2.5-17 years). Duration of treatment with zinc sulfate was 83.3 wk (range, 8-344 wk). Side effects, all of gastrointestinal origin, were observed in 21 patients (40% 9 males and 12 females), irrespective of the duration of therapy. thirteen out of 21 patients were over the age of 10 years. the most common AtP7B mutation was p.H1069Q. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, performed in 7 patients (33.3%) suffering from persistent and severe abdominal pain, revealed gastrointestinal ulcerations or erosions with negative Helicobacter pylori tests in all subjects investigated. the above mentioned 7 patients were treated with proton pump inhibitors. three of those experienced resolution of symptoms, whereas proton-pump inhibitors failed to alleviate symptoms of the remaining four children and conversion of therapy to D-penicillamine was needed. CONCLUSION:Zinc sulphate appears to cause significant gastrointestinal side effects, which children on therapy for Wilson's disease should be closely monitored for.
