Predat.r-induced phenot.pic plast.cit. of shape and behavior： parallel and unique pat.erns across sexes and species

Phenot.pic plast.cit. is oft.n an adapt.t.on of organisms t. cope wit. t.mporally or spat.ally het.r- ogenous landscapes. Like ot.er adapt.t.ons, one would predict.t.at.different.species, populat.ons, or sexes might.t.us show some degree of parallel evolut.on of plast.cit., in t.e form of parallel react.on norms, when exposed t. analogous environment.l gradient.. Indeed, one might.even ex- pect.parallelism of plast.cit. t. repeat.dly evolve in mult.ple t.ait. responding t. t.e same gradi- ent. result.ng in int.grat.d parallelism of plast.cit.. In t.is st.dy, we experiment.lly t.st.d for paral- lel pat.erns of predat.r-mediat.d plast.cit. of size, shape, and behavior of 2 species and sexes of mosquit.fish. Examinat.on of behavioral t.ials indicat.d t.at.t.e 2 species showed unique pat.erns of behavioral plast.cit., whereas t.e 2 sexes in each species showed parallel responses. Fish shape showed parallel pat.erns of plast.cit. for bot. sexes and species, albeit.males showed evidence of unique plast.cit. relat.d t. reproduct.ve anat.my. Moreover, pat.erns of shape plast.cit. due t. predat.r exposure were broadly parallel t. what.has been depict.d for predat.r-mediat.d popula- t.on divergence in ot.er st.dies （slender bodies, expanded caudal regions, vent.ally locat.d eyes, and reduced male gonopodia）. We did not.find evidence of phenot.pic plast.cit. in fish size for ei- t.er species or sex. Hence, our findings support.broadly int.grat.d parallelism of plast.cit. for sexes wit.in species and less int.grat.d parallelism for species. We int.rpret.t.ese findings wit. respect.t. t.eir pot.nt.al broader implicat.ons for t.e int.ract.ng roles of adapt.t.on and const.aint.in t.e evolut.onary origins of parallelism of plast.cit. in general.
