A 61-year-old female patient suffering from recent onset palpitations and dyspnea on exertion with hypertension and mitral valve prolapse in her past history came to our outpatient department. Echocardiography revealed a mild mitral valve prolapse, slightly decreased left ventricular （LV） function （LV ejection fraction： 51%） and a mild mitral regurgitation.

AIM： To investigate the pattern of mucin expression and concentration in bile obtained during endoscopic retrograde cholangiography （ErC） in relation to gallstone ***： Bile samples obtained at ErC from 29 consecutive patients, 17 with and 12 without gallstone disease were evaluated for mucin content by gel filtration on a Sepharose CL-4B column. Dot blot analysis for bile mucin apoproteins was performed with antibodies to Mucin 1 （MUC1）, MUC2, MUC3, MUC5AC, MUC5B and MUC6. Staining intensity score （0-3） was used as a measure of antigen ***： MUCl, MUC2, MUC3, MUCSAC, MUC5B and MUC6 were demonstrated in 34.4%, 34.4%, 51.7%, 51.7%, 55.1% and 27.5% of bile samples, *** staining intensity scores were 0.62 ± 0.94, 0.58 ± 0.90, 0.79 ± 0.97, 1.06 ± 1.22, 1.20 ± 2.26 and 0.41 ± 0.73, respectively. Mean mucin concentration measured in bile by the Sepharose CL-4B method was 22.8 ± 24.0 mg/mL （range 3.4-89.0 mg/mL）. Mean protein concentration was 8.1 ± 4.8 mg/mL （range 1.7-23.2 mg/mL）.CONCLUSION： High levels of MUC3, MUC5AC and MUC5B are expressed in bile aspirated during ErC examination. A specific pattern of mucin gene expression or change in mucin concentration was not found in gallstone disease.

We propose a novel wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network （WDM-PON） to simultaneously transmit unicast data and multicast services with upstream data re-modulation in optical network units （ONUs）. For each wavelength channel in the optical line terminal （OLT）, the downstream unicast data are applied to one arm of a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator （DPMZM） to generate baseband unicast non-return-to-zero （NrZ） signal. A radio frequency （rF） control signal is applied to the other arm to present two un-modulated sidebands for multicast data modulation in a differential phase-shift keying （DPSK） format. The flexible and dynamic multicast services are realized by simply switching the rF control signal on or off. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 1.25-Gb/s downstream unicast, multicast, and upstream data.

Bone is a highly vascularized tissue reliant on the close spatial and temporal association between bloodvessels and bone cells. Therefore, cells that participate in vasculogenesis and osteogenesis play a pivotal role in bone formation during prenatal and postnatal periods. Nevertheless, spontaneous healing of bone fracture is occasionally impaired due to insufficient blood and cellular supply to the site of injury. In these cases, bone regeneration process is interrupted, which might result in delayed union or even nonunion of the fracture. Nonunion fracture is difficult to treat and have a high financial impact. In the last decade, numerous technological advancements in bone tissue engineering and cell-therapy opened new horizon in the field of bone regeneration. This review starts with presentation of the biological processes involved in bone development, bone remodeling, fracture healing process and the microenvironment at bone healing sites. Then, we discuss the rationale for using adult stem cells and listed the characteristics of the available cells for bone regeneration. The mechanism of action and epigenetic regulations for osteogenic differentiation are also described. Finally, we review the literature for translational and clinical trials that investigated the use of adult stem cells(mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells and CD34+ blood progenitors) for bone regeneration.

Effect of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans on neuronal cell adhesion, spreading and neurite growth in culture

As one major component of extracellular matrix （ECM） in the central nervous system, chondroitin sul- fate proteoglycans （CSPGs） have long been known as inhibitors enriched in the glial scar that prevent axon regeneration after injury. Although many studies have shown that CSPGs inhibited neurite out- growth in vitro using different types of neurons, the mechanism by which CSPGs inhibit axonal growth remains poorly understood. Using cerebellar granule neuron （CGN） culture, in this study, we evaluated the effects of different concentrations of both immobilized and soluble CSPGs on neuronal growth, in- cluding cell adhesion, spreading and neurite growth. Neurite length decreased while CSPGs concentration arised, meanwhile, a decrease in cell density accompanied by an increase in cell aggregates formation was observed. Soluble CSPGs also showed an inhibition on neurite outgrowth, but it required a higher concen- tration to induce cell aggregates formation than coated CSPGs. We also found that growth cone size was significantly reduced on CSPGs and neuronal cell spreading was restrained by CSPGs, attributing to an inhibition on lamellipodial extension. The effect of CSPGs on neuron adhesion was further evidenced by interference reflection microscopy （IrM） which directly demonstrated that both CGNs and cerebral cortical neurons were more loosely adherent to a CSPG substrate. These data demonstrate that CSPGs have an effect on cell adhesion and spreading in addition to neurite outgrowth.
