Systematic review of nutrition screening and assessment in inflammatory bowel disease

BACKGROUND Malnutrition is prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Multiple nutrition screening (NST) and assessment tools (NAT) have been developed for general populations, but the evidence in patients with IBD remains unclear. AIM To systematically review the prevalence of abnormalities on NSTs and NATs, whether NSTs are associated with NATs, and whether they predict clinical outcomes in patients with IBD. METHODS Comprehensive searches performed in Medline, CINAHL Plus and PubMed. Included: English language studies correlating NSTs with NATs or NSTs/NATs with clinical outcomes in IBD. Excluded: Review articles/case studies;use of body mass index/laboratory values as sole NST/NAT;age<16. RESULTS Of 16 studies and 1618 patients were included, 72% Crohn’s disease and 28% ulcerative colitis. Four NSTs (the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Malnutrition Inflammation Risk Tool (MIRT), Saskatchewan Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nutrition Risk Tool (SaskIBD-NRT) and Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) were significantly associated with nutritional assessment measures of sarcopenia and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Three NSTs (MIRT, NRS-2002 and Nutritional Risk Index) were associated with clinical outcomes including hospitalizations, need for surgery, disease flares, and length of stay (LOS). Sarcopenia was the most commonly evaluated NAT associated with outcomes including the need for surgery and post-operative complications. The SGA was not associated with clinical outcomes aside from LOS. CONCLUSION There is limited evidence correlating NSTs, NATs and clinical outcomes in IBD. Although studies support the association of NSTs/NATs with relevant outcomes, the heterogeneity calls for further studies before an optimal tool can be recommended. The NRS-2002, measures of sarcopenia and developments of novel NSTs/NATs, such as the MIRT, represent key, clinically-relevant areas for future exploration.

Effects of precommercial thinning intensity on growth of Fagus orientalis Lipsky stands over 6 years

Determining the most suitable intensities for precommercial thinning (PCT) in oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) stands, which cover substantial areas in Turkey and have a high economic and ecological value, is essential to provide higher economic return and obtain well-formed stems. The effects of various rates of PCT interventions on the growth characteristics of natural stands, located in the northern part of Turkey, were explored to determine appropriate thinning rates;24 experimental PCT plots (4 PCT rates × 3 replications × 2 sites) were established in young thicket-stage stands and four precommercial thinning rates such as light (1 – 1.5 m spacing), moderate (1.5−2.0 m spacing) and heavy (2.5–3.0 m spacing) thinning, including a control plot (i.e., untreated), were applied. At the end of the 2007 and 2010 growing seasons, the diameter and height of the trees were measured and growth analyzed based on the 3-year and 6-year incremental growth. PCT levels were found to have significant (P < 0.05) effects on diameter, height, total basal area and total volume increment at the end of each period. The mean diameter and height increment proportionally increased with increasing PCT intensity in the third and the sixth year. In both sites, the moderate PCT provided the greatest total basal area and total volume increment. The early results indicate that the moderate PCT (1.5–2 m spacing) boosted stand development over time.

Assessing fire severity in Turkey's forest ecosystems using spectral indices from satellite images

Nanoscale electrocatalysts have exhibited promising activity and stability,improving the kinetics of numerous electrochemical reactions in renewable energy systems such as electrolyzers,fuel cells,and metal-air *** to the size effect,nano particles with extreme small size have high surface areas,complicated morphology,and various surface terminations,which make them different from their bulk phases and often undergo restructuring during the *** restructured materials are hard to probe by conventional ex-situ characterizations,thus leaving the true reaction centers and/or active sites difficult to ***,in situ techniques,particularly X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),have become an important tool to obtain oxidation states,electronic structure,and local bonding environments,which are critical to investigate the electrocatalysts under real reaction *** this review,we go over the basic principles of XAS and highlight recent applications of in situ XAS in studies of nanoscale electrocatalysts.

The biostimulative effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy application on thawed dental pulp stem cells

This study was conducted to understand the cellular proliferative effect of Photobiomodulation Therapy(PBMT)on thawed dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs)stored for 2 *** this purpose,cells were exposed to PBMT for short period of time to evaluate the most appropriate PBMT parameter for stimulating cellular proliferation that can be used for future tissue engineering *** characterized DPSCs were seperated into three groups according to the laser energy densities(5 J/cm^(2) or 7 J/cm^(2))applied and a group was served as control in which cells did not receive any laser *** cells in laser-irradiated groups were further divided into two subgroups according to the period of application(24 h and 0 h)and exposed to Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide diode laser *** viability and the proliferation rate of the cells were analyzed with the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay,any PBMT related cellular cytotoxicity were determined by performing a lactate dehydrogenase assay(LDH)and statistical analysis of data were *** percentage of proliferation seemed to increase upon laser therapy in both different doses of irradiation(5 J/cm^(2) and 7 J/cm^(2)).DPSCs showed significantly higher proliferation rate upon 7 J/cm^(2) irradiation in both 0 h and 24 h when compared to control ***,DPSCs irradiated with 5 J/cm^(2) dose induced relatively lower proliferation rate when compared to 7 J/cm^(2) dose of *** to the LDH data,PBMT exposure did not show any significant cytotoxicity at both energy densities in all different time *** at 7 J/cm^(2) should be an effective parameter to stimulate proliferation of long-term cryopreserved DPSCs in a short term time *** therapy may be an upcoming tool for future tissue enngineering and regenerative dentistry applications.

Neuroimaging in atypical normal tension glaucoma:debating routine implementation in the absence of classic neurological findings

●AIM:To assess the necessity of neuroimaging in patients with neurological or atypical findings of normal tension glaucoma(NTG)who do not exhibit typical glaucoma manifestations.●METHODS:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 atypical NTG patients who underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)due to atypical *** demographic characteristics,clinical parameters,and radiological findings were recorded.●RESULTS:Among the patients,66.7%had abnormal radiology results,with the most common findings being gliosis(34.4%),sequelae of cerebrovascular events and vascular malformations(14.4%),and benign intracranial mass lesions(11%).Non-glaucomatous visual field defects were more frequently observed in patients with abnormal neuroimaging ***,there were no significant differences in intraocular pressure,optic disc parameters,retinal nerve fiber layer thickness,and visual field indices between patients with normal and abnormal radiological *** mean age of the patients was ***,there was a significant age difference,with the abnormal radiology group having a higher median age(P=0.021).●CONCLUSION:The study highlights the importance of cranial imaging in older NTG patients to detect underlying pathologies and prevent *** suggests that neuroimaging may be warranted in NTG patients with atypical visual field defects incompatible with ***,routine neuroimaging in all NTG patients without classic neurological signs may not be necessary.

Environmental control of daily stem radius increment in the montane conifer Cedrus libani

Deep learning-based prediction of 3-dimensional silver contact shapes enabling improved quality control in solar cell metallization

A 99-year old patient with takotsubo cardiomyopathy recovering from cardiogenic shock

Takotsubo syndrome(TTS)is a rare clinical entity commonly seen in post-menopausal women after an emotional or sometimes physical stress.[1,2]This syndrome is thought to be caused by increased circulation catecholamine levels secondary to an adrenergic stimulus resulting in transient coronary spasm and microvascular dysfunction.[3]TTS is characterized by acute and reversible left ventricular dysfunction with the typical ECG and clinical findings of an acute coronary syndrome but no significant coronary stenosis.[4]Typically,in TTS,antero-apical ballooning is observed in ventriculography,and segmentary wall motion abnormalities are observed in magnetic resonance imaging and *** heart failure,left ventricular outflow tract obstruction,mitral regurgitation and cardiogenic shock may complicate this syndrome.[5]Herein,we present a case who is the oldest one in the literature with TTS and cardiogenic shock.
