Arsenic and sulfur nanoparticle synthesis mimicking environmental conditions of submarine shallow-water hydrothermal vents

Arsenic and sulfur mineralization is a natural phenomenon occurring in hydrothermal systems where parameters like temperature and organic matter(OM)can influence the mobilization of the toxic metalloid in marine environments.In the present study we analyze the influence of temperature and OM(particularly sulfur-containing additives)on As and S precipitation based on the recent discovery of As-rich nanoparticles in the hydrothermal system near the coast of the Greek island Milos.To this end,we experimentally recreate the formation of amorphous colloidal particles rich in As and S via acidification(pH 3–4)of aqueous precursors at various temperatures.At higher temperatures,we observe the formation of monodisperse particles within the first 24 h of the experiment,generating colloidal particles with diameters close to 160 nm.The S:As ratio and particle size of the synthetized particles closely correlates with values for As_(x)S_(y)particles detected in the hydrothermal system off Milos.Furthermore,organic sulfur containing additives(cysteine and glutathione,GSH)are a key factor in the process of nucleation and growth of amorphous colloidal As_(x)S_(y)particles and,together with the temperature gradient present in shallow hydrothermal vents,dictate the stabilization of As-bearing nanomaterials in the environment.Based on these findings,we present a simple model that summarizes our new insights into the formation and mobility of colloidal As in aquatic ecosystems.In this context,amorphous As_(x)S_(y)particles can present harmful effects to micro-and macro-biota not foreseen in bulk As material.

Traumatic brain injury： Changing concepts and approaches

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a huge global medical and public health problem across all ages and in all populations. In this review, we discussed the changing concepts and approaches. Globally, the incidence is increasing and in high income countries epidemiologic patterns are changing with consequences for prevention campaigns. TBI should not be viewed as an event, but as a progressive and chronic disease with lifetime consequences. In the clinical field, precision approaches to treatment are being developed, which require more accurate disease phenotyping. Recent advances in genomics, neuroimaging and biomarker development offer great opportunities to develop improved phenotyping and better disease characterization. In clinical research, randomized controlled clinical trials are being complemented by large data collections in broad TBI populations in comparative effectiveness designs. Global collaborations are being developed among funding agencies, research organizations and researchers. Only by combining efforts and collaboration will we be able to advance the field by providing long-needed evidence to support practice recommendations and to improve treatment.

Describing gluons at zero and finite temperature

Any description of gluons requires a well-defined gauge.This is complicated non-perturbatively by Gribov copies.A possible method-independent gauge definition to resolve this problem is presented and afterwards used to study the properties of gluons at any temperature.It is found that only chromo-electric properties reflect the phase transition.From these the gauge-invariant phase transition temperature is determined for SU（2） and SU（3） Yang-Mills theory independently.

Anisotropic brittle-ductile transition of monocrystalline sapphire during orthogonal cutting and nanoindentation experiments

Single-crystal sapphire is utilized as a high-performance engineering material,especially in extreme and harsh environments.However,due to its extreme hardness and brittleness,the machinability of sapphire is still a challenge.By means of nanoindentation and plunge-cut experiments,the anisotropic brittle-ductile transition of the prismatic M-plane and rhombohedral R-plane is examined by analyzing crack morphologies and the critical depth-of-cut(CDC).The experimental results of the nanoindentation tests are correlated to the plunge-cut experiment.Both the prism plane and the rhombohedral crystal plane exhibit a two-fold symmetry of ductility with various crack patterns along the machined grooves.The direction-dependent plasticity of the hexagonal sapphire crystal is mainly connected to a twinning process accompanied by slip dislocation.

Circulating tumor cells and their role in prostate cancer

Circulating tumor cells (CTC)have become an important biomarker in patients with advanced prostate cancer.CTC count has been demonstrated to be a prognostic factor for overall survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). In localized prostate cancer,a clear correlation between CTC counts and clinicopathological risk parameters and outcome has not been observed.Currently,the focus of research is shifting from CTC enumeration towards molecular characterization of CTC leading to the discovery of markers predicting treatment response.The role of androgen receptor splice variants expressed by CTC as markers of resistance to abiraterone and enzalutamide has been assessed by various studies.The identification of CTC markers predicting treatment response represents a key step to guide the selection of treatment (e.g.,abiraterone/enzalutamide vs taxanes), particularly in patients with mCRPC.As an alternative to CTC,the analysis of circulating tumor DNA has been shown to enable a noninvasive disease characterization having high potential to promote precision oncology.

Current concepts and trends in the treatment of bone metastases in patients with advanced prostate cancer

Bone metastases have a major impact on quality of life and survival of patients with advanced prostate cancer,in the last decade,the development and approval of substances inhibiting the vicious cycle of bone metastases have enabled the reduction of complications caused by bone metastases in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.These drugs have raised awareness of the importance of skeletal-related events which in the meantime represent an important end point also in trials using agents not specifically designed for bone lesions.Second-generation antihormona]drugs such as enzalutamide or abiraterone have been shown to have a positive impact on the incidence of skeletal complications and therefore provide an important tool in the armamentarium used for treating bone metastases.Radiopharmaceuticals such as radium-223 dichloride([^223Ra])have been demonstrated not only to reduce skeletal-related events and bone-related pain,but also to prolong overall survival,thereby being the first bone-targeting agent showing a survival benefit.As previous studies have not provided an obvious benefit of bone-targeted lesions in castration-sensitive disease,the use of these agents is not recommended.In oligometastatic prostate cancer,the role of local treatment of metastases using stereotactic radiation or radiosurgery is a matter of intense debates and may play an increasing role in the future.

This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education.The authors are mid-career education faculty,who visited six universities in three countries to observe cross-cultural contents in teacher preparation courses.Cross-cultural competence relies on theories of globalization,intercultural and multicultural education.Using a case study method,the authors gathered data through relevant literature,course descriptions,met with stakeholders,wrote and coded reflective and reflexive field notes,and identified trends.These trends included the infusion of Eastern content into Western course work,and the role of Western arts forms in Eastern settings.These findings support the development of“cross-cultural communication through the arts”or“komunikasi silang budaya melalui seni”as a way of approaching cross-cultural teaching in Indonesia.

A Cambrian micro-lobopodian and the evolution of arthropod locomotion and reproduction

The evolutionary success of arthropods, the most abundant and diverse animal group, is mainly based on their segmented body and jointed appendages, features that had evolved most likely already before the Cambrian. The first arthropod-like animals, the lobopodians from the Early Cambrian, were unsclerotized and worm-like, and they had unjointed tubular legs. Here we describe the first three-dimensionally preserved Cambrian lobopodian. The material presented of Orstenotubulus evamuellerae gen. et sp. nov. is the smallest and youngest of a lobopodian known. O. evamuellerae shows strikingly detailed similarities to Recent tardigrades and/or onychophorans in its cellular-structured cuticle and the telescopic spines. It also shows similarities to other, longer known lobopodians, but which are ten times as large as the new form. These similarities include the finely annulated body and legs, which is characteristic also for Recent onychophorans, and paired humps continuing into spines situated dorsally to the leg insertions, a feature lacking in the extant forms. The morphology of O. evamuellerae not only elucidates our knowledge about lobopodians, but also aids in a clearer picture of the early evolution of arthropods. An example is the single ventral gonopore between a limb pair of O. evamuellerae, which indicates that a single gonopore, as developed in onychophorans, tardigrades, pentastomids, myriapods and insects, might represent the plesiomorphic state for Arthropoda, while the paired state in chelicerates and crustaceans was convergently achieved. Concerning life habits, the lateral orientation of the limbs and their anchoring spines of the new lobopodian imply that early arthropods were crawlers rather than walkers.
