Since 2009 initiatives that were selected for the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures started working to build research infrastructures for a wide range of research *** important result of the strategic discussions was that distributed infrastructure scenarios were now seen as“complex research facilities”in addition to,for example traditional centralised infrastructures such as *** this paper we look at five typical examples of such distributed infrastructures where many researchers working in different centres are contributing data,tools/services and knowledge and where the major task of the research infrastructure initiative is to create a virtually integrated suite of resources allowing researchers to carry out state-of-the-art *** analysis shows that most of these research infrastructures worked on the Findability,Accessibility,Interoperability and Reusability dimensions before the term“FAIR”was actually *** definition of the FAIR principles and their wide acceptance can be seen as a confirmation of what these initiatives were doing and it gives new impulse to close still existing *** initiatives also seem to be ready to take up the next steps which will emerge from the definition of FAIR maturity *** from these infrastructures should bring in their 10-years’experience in this definition process.

Background:Low cardiorespiratory fitness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality,and interventions that increase fitness reduce ***-walking decreases musculoskeletal impact and risk of falls in older individuals,but it is unclear whether water-walking improves aerobic fitness in the same way as weight-dependent *** randomized controlled trial involved 3 intervention groups—a no-exercise control group(CG),a land-walking(LW)group,and a water-walking(WW)group—to investigate the comparative impacts of LWandWWto CG on ***:Both exercise groups attended individually tailored,center-based,intensity-matched 3×weekly sessions for 24 weeks,which progressed to 150 min of exercise per *** was followed by a 24-week no-intervention *** graded exercise tests were performed on a treadmill at Weeks 0,24,and ***:Maximal oxygen uptake increased from Week 0 to Week 24 in both exercise groups(0.57±0.62 mL/kg/min,0.03±0.04 L/min for LW;0.93±0.75 mL/kg/min,0.06±0.06 L/min for WW,mean±SE)compared to the CG(-1.75±0.78 mL/kg/min,-0.16±0.05 L/min)(group×time,p<0.05).Time to exhaustion increased significantly following LW only(123.4±25.5 s),which was significantly greater(p=0.001)than the CG(24.3±18.5 s).By Week 48,the training-induced adaptations in the exercise groups returned to near baseline ***:Our study supports current physical-activity recommendations that 150 min/week of moderate-intensity exercise produces improvements in fitness in previously sedentary older ***,LW andWW elicit similar improvements in fitness if conducted at the same relative ***-na?ve older individuals can benefit from the lower impact forces and decreased risk of falls associated withWWwithout compromising improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness.

Rock Cutting Analysis Employing Finite and Discrete Element Methods

The petroleum industry has shown great interest in the study of drilling optimization on pre-salt formations given the low rates of penetration observed so far. Rate of penetration is the key to economically drill the pre-salt carbonate rock. This work presents the results of numerical modeling through finite element method and discrete element method for single cutter drilling in carbonate samples. The work is relevant to understand the mechanics of drill bit-rock interaction while drilling deep wells and the results were validated with experimental data raised under simulated downhole conditions. The numerical models were carried out under different geometrical configurations, varying the cutter chamfer size and back-rake angles. The forces generated on the cutter are translated into mechanical specific energy as this parameter is often used to measure drilling efficiency. Results indicate that the chamfer size does not change significantly the mechanical specific energy values, characteristic. Results also show there is a significant increase although the cutter aggressiveness is influenced by this geometrical in drilling resistance for larger values of back-rake angle.

Background: Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare fibrosing disorder associated with peripheral eosinophilia and scleroderma-like induration of the distal extremities which affects substantially quality of life. Although the disease has been described 30 years ago, the etiology and pathomechanisms are still obscure, and consensus for therapy is lacking. Numerous case reports of patients with EF exist but series are scarce. Patients and Methods: Eleven patients with EF from the Department of Dermatology, Kantonsspital Aarau, the University Hospital Basel and the OutpatientClinic of Dermatology, Triemli Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, were retrospectively studied. Results:In 4 patients the initial diagnosis was not recognized by the referring non dermatologists. The median age was 55 years, excluding the youngest patient ever diagnosed with EF (age =1 year). All patients showed an induration of the skin, which led to painful contractures in the joints in 3 cases. All but 2 patients demonstrated edema. A slight predominance of the upper extremities was observed. Sclerodactyly was noticed in 1 patient. Three patients reported an initial trauma at the affected site. Two patients were tested positive for borreliosis. One patient subsequently developed aplastic anemia and Hashimoto thyroiditis. Visceral or extracutaneous involvement was absent. Eight patients had a full or partial recovery under corticosteroids whereas in 2, improvement could be achieved only with cyclosporine, azathioprine or cyclophosphamide. Conclusions: The diagnosis of EF can be established by clinical, laboratory and histological findings. In general, corticosteroids are highly efficacious in EF and only a minority of patients need other immunosuppressive or cytostatic drugs.
