Genetic parameters of drinking and feeding traits of wean-to-finish pigs under a polymicrobial natural disease challenge

Background:The pork industry faces unprecedented challenges from disease,which increases cost of production and use of antibiotics,and reduces production efficiency,carcass quality,and animal *** solution is to improve the overall resilience of pigs to a broad array of common diseases through genetic *** changes in feeding and drinking are usually the very first clinical signs when animals are exposed to stressors such as *** in feeding and drinking behaviors in diseased pigs may reflect the way they cope with the challenge and,thus,could be used as indicator traits to select for disease *** objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters of feeding and drinking traits for wean-to-finish pigs in a natural polymicrobial disease challenge model,to estimate genetic correlations of feeding and drinking traits with growth rate and clinical disease traits,and to develop indicator traits to select for disease ***:In general,drinking traits had moderate to high estimates of heritability,especially average daily water dispensed,duration,and number of visits(0.44 to 0.58).Similar estimates were observed for corresponding feeding traits(0.35 to 0.51).Most genetic correlation estimates among drinking traits were moderate to high(0.30 to 0.92)and higher than among feeding traits(0 to 0.11).Compared to other drinking traits,water intake duration and number of visits had relatively stronger negative genetic correlation estimates with treatment rate and mortality,especially across the challenge nursery and finisher(−0.39 and−0.45 for treatment rate;−0.20 and−0.19 for mortality).Conclusion:Most of the recorded drinking and feeding traits under a severe disease challenge had moderate to high estimates of heritability,especially for feed or water intake duration and number of *** and genetic correlations among the recorded feeding traits under disease were generally low but drinking traits show

NECAB family of neuronal calcium-binding proteins in health and disease

The N-terminal EF-hand calcium-binding proteins 1–3(NECAB1–3) constitute a family of predominantly neuronal proteins characterized by the presence of at least one EF-hand calcium-binding domain and a functionally less well characterized C-terminal antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain. All three family members were initially discovered due to their interactions with other proteins. NECAB1 associates with synaptotagmin-1, a critical neuronal protein involved in membrane trafficking and synaptic vesicle exocytosis. NECAB2 interacts with predominantly striatal G-protein-coupled receptors, while NECAB3 partners with amyloid-β A4 precursor protein-binding family A members 2 and 3, key regulators of amyloid-β production. This demonstrates the capacity of the family for interactions with various classes of proteins. NECAB proteins exhibit distinct subcellular localizations: NECAB1 is found in the nucleus and cytosol, NECAB2 resides in endosomes and the plasma membrane, and NECAB3 is present in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. The antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain, an evolutionarily ancient component, is akin to atypical heme oxygenases in prokaryotes but is not wellcharacterized in vertebrates. Prokaryotic antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domains typically form dimers, suggesting that calcium-mediated conformational changes in NECAB proteins may induce antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain dimerization, potentially activating some enzymatic properties. However, the substrate for this enzymatic activity remains uncertain. Alternatively, calcium-mediated conformational changes might influence protein interactions or the subcellular localization of NECAB proteins by controlling the availability of protein–protein interaction domains situated between the EF hands and the antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain. Investigation on the Reduction of Center of Mass Oscillations of Flexible Flapping Fins

Nature has been a source of inspiration for developing advanced autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles. The bodies with flapping appendages produce Center of Mass （COM） oscillations as the flapping fins generate forces oscillatory in nature. The vehicles with larger COM oscillations pose the problems of control and maneuverability and this paper discusses the effect of flexibility and other operating parameters such as heaving, pitching amplitudes and operating frequency on COM oscillations. A detailed theoretical investigation has been carried out to predict the optimal operating parameters along with the fin stiffness to reduce the COM oscillations for a given Self-Propelled Speed （SPS）. Experiments have been performed to validate the theoretical results. It has been observed that the flexible fins operating at larger frequencies produce lower COM oscillations compared to stiffer fins operating at lower frequencies for a given mean thrust/SPS, and that the trailing edge amplitude along with the deformation pattern play a role in the generation of COM oscillations.

Preconditioned Iterative Methods for Algebraic Systems from Multiplicative Half-Quadratic Regularization Image Restorations

Image restoration is often solved by minimizing an energy function consisting of a data-fidelity term and a regularization term.A regularized convex term can usually preserve the image edges well in the restored *** this paper,we consider a class of convex and edge-preserving regularization functions,i.e.,multiplicative half-quadratic regularizations,and we use the Newton method to solve the correspondingly reduced systems of nonlinear *** each Newton iterate,the preconditioned conjugate gradient method,incorporated with a constraint preconditioner,is employed to solve the structured Newton equation that has a symmetric positive definite coefficient matrix. The eigenvalue bounds of the preconditioned matrix are deliberately derived,which can be used to estimate the convergence speed of the preconditioned conjugate gradient *** use experimental results to demonstrate that this new approach is efficient, and the effect of image restoration is reasonably well.

ON ALGORITHMS FOR AUTOMATIC DEBLURRING FROM A SINGLE IMAGE

In this paper, we study two variational blind deblurring models for a single linage,The first model is to use the total variation prior in both image and blur, while the second model is to use the flame based prior in both image and blur. The main contribution of this paper is to show how to employ the generalized cross validation （GCV） method efficiently and automatically to estimate the two regularization parameters associated with the priors in these two blind motion deblurring models. Our experimental results show that the visual quality of restored images by the proposed method is very good, and they are competitive with the tested existing methods. We will also demonstrate the proposed method is also very efficient.

Solving sparse non-negative tensor equations： algorithms and applications

We study iterative methods for solving a set of sparse non-negative tensor equations （multivariate polynomial systems） arising from data mining applications such as information retrieval by query search and community discovery in multi-dimensional networks. By making use of sparse and non-negative tensor structure, we develop Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel methods for solving tensor equations. The multiplication of tensors with vectors are required at each iteration of these iterative methods, the cost per iteration depends on the number of non-zeros in the sparse tensors. We show linear convergence of the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel methods under suitable conditions, and therefore, the set of sparse non-negative tensor equations can be solved very efficiently. Experimental results on information retrieval by query search and community discovery in multi-dimensional networks are presented to illustrate the application of tensor equations and the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Influence of lanthanum level and interactions with nitrogen source on early development of Juglans nigra

Rare earth elements have been used for 30 years in Chinese agriculture to improve growth and yield. Numerous scientific studies have shown improvements in physiology, mineral nutrition, and growth, though deleterious effects may also occur. Very few studies have been performed on woody species. We exponentially fertilized one-year old black walnut （Juglans nigra L.） seedlings with 0, 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 mg lanthanum （La） and 800 mg nitrogen （N） as NaNO3, （NH4）2SO4, NH4NO3, or no N. One month following final fertilization, growth, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and nitrate reductase activity were assessed. Plants fertilized with the highest level of La had reduced fine root growth, concentrations of magnesium, calcium, nickel, and phosphorus, photosynthesis levels, and chlorophyll a content. Foliar La concentration showed an interaction effect, with three to four times greater concentration in plants fed at 100 mg La to those given 10 mg La for （NH4）2SO4 and NHaNO3 treatments. The results suggested no beneficial effects of La addition at levels used in this study and interactions between N source and La levels did not have an important impact on the growth, mineral nutrition, or physiology of black walnut seedlings.

Whole-mine subsidence over tabular deposits and related seismicity

The challenge of estimating mine-wide subsidence and linkages to seismicity over tabular deposits is addressed by a special finite element technique(dual node–dual mesh). Subsidence and mine-induced seismicity begins near the face when caving occurs and propagates to the surface as extraction reaches a critical extent. Thus, the challenge is to obtain details at the face at the meter scale and also at the surface over the whole mine at the kilometer scale. Interactions between old and new sections of a mine are automatically taken into account with this technique. The finite element method is well established technology based on fundamentals of physical laws, kinematics and material laws. With this technique, no empirical ‘‘scaling" or fitting computer output by input data ‘‘adjustment" to mine measurements is necessary. Capability is demonstrated for doing practical whole-mine subsidence analysis from first principles. Mine-induced seismicity is shown to correlate well with face advance and element failure.

High Q-factor reconfigurable microresonators induced in side-coupled optical fibres

High Q-factor monolithic optical microresonators found numerous applications in classical and quantum optical signal processing,microwave photonics,ultraprecise sensing,as well as fundamental optical and physical ***,due to the solid structure of these microresonators,attaining the free spectral range tunability of most of them,critical for several of these applications,was,so far,*** address this problem,here we experimentally demonstrate that the side-coupling of coplanar bent optical fibres can induce a high Q-factor whispering gallery mode optical *** changing the curvature radius of fibres from the centimetre order to the millimetre order,we demonstrate fully mechanically reconfigurable optical microresonators with dimensions varying from the millimetre order to 100-micron order and free spectral range varying from a picometre to ten picometre *** developed theory describes the formation of the discovered microresonators and their major properties in a reasonable agreement with the experimental *** new microresonators may find applications in cavity QED,microresonator optomechanics,frequency comb generation with tuneable repetition rate,tuneable lasing,and tuneable processing and delay of optical pulses.
