The global diversity of fungi has been estimated using several different *** is somewhere between 2–11 million estimated spec.es,but the number of formally desc.ibed taxa is around 150,000,a tiny frac.ion of the *** this paper,we examine 12 asc.myc.te genera as c.se studies to establish trends in fungal spec.es desc.iptions,and introduc. new spec.es in eac. *** highlight the importanc. of traditional morpho-molec.lar methods in publishing new spec.es,we introduc. novel taxa in 12 genera that are c.nsidered to have low spec.es *** disc.ss whether the spec.es are likely to be rare or due to a lac. of extensive sampling and *** genera are Apiospora,Bambusic.la,Beltrania,c.pronia,Distoseptispora,Endoc.lyx,Neoc.tenulostroma,Neodeightonia,Parac.niothyrium,Peroneutypa,Phaeoac.emonium and *** disc.ss host-spec.fic.ty in selec.ed genera and c.mpare the number of spec.es epithets in eac. genus with the number of ITS(barc.de)sequenc.s deposited in GenBank and *** furthermore disc.ss the relationship between the divergenc. times of these genera with those of their *** hypothesize whether there might be more spec.es in these genera and disc.ss hosts and habitats that should be investigated for novel spec.es disc.very.
