High-efficiency circularly polarized emission from liquid-crystalline platinum complexes

Realizing both a high emission efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor(g_(lum))in circularly polarized solution processable organic light-emitting diodes(CP-OLEDs)remains a significant *** this contribution,tw. chiral phosphorescent liquid crystals based on cyclometalated platinum complexes are prepared,in w.ich the chiral s-2-methyl-1-butyl group is introduced into the cyclometalating ligand and the mesogenic fragment is attached to the periphery of the ancillary *** platinum complexes exhibit both smectic and chiral nematic phases as evidenced by polarized optical microscopy,differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray ***,a high photoluminescent quantum efficiency of over 78%and clear circularly polarized luminescent signal w.th g_(PL)of about 10^(-2)are observed for the ***,solution-processed CP-OLEDs show.maximum external quantum efficiencies(EQE)of over 15%and strong circularly polarized electroluminescent signals w.th a g_(EL)≈10^(-2).This research demonstrates that both liquid crystallinity and the number of chiral centers play key roles in improving the chiroptical property,paving the w.y for a new.approach for the design of high-efficiency CPL emitters.

The role of preoperative immune modulating nutrition

The meta-analysis by Adiamah et al.(1)clearly identifies the value of preoperative feeding w.th immune modulating nutrition(IMN)preoperatively in patients undergoing surgery for gastrointestinal cancer sufficient to make this a general recommendation by the relevant nutrition societies such as in future ESPEN and the Society of Critical Care Medicine-ASPEN guidelines(2,3).Previously ESPEN has recommended IMN in malnourished patients follow.ng major cancer surgery(2,4),but there has been some controversy as to w.ether IMN offered benefit beyond that seen w.th standard supplemental feeding in preoperative patients(5).How.ver this present analysis appears to firmly establish the value of IMN in preoperative preparation of the gastrointestinal cancer patient undergoing *** said there are significant and important characteristics of their analysis of 16 randomized trials of solely preoperative feeding in patients w.th gastrointestinal cancer that may have been critical in determining the significant outcomes of a marked reduction in infectious complications by nearly 1/2(OR=0.52)w.th a Pw.th a P valuew.s no impact on non-infectious complications,w.ich might be anticipated,since enhancement of immune function w.uld be expected to principally impact on the risk of infectious complications w.ich could then secondarily influence length of *** the authors restricted the included studies to have only those patients w.th malignant disease w.th the preoperative feeding period to be at least 3 days,w.ich included studies up to a total of 8 days *** former restriction tends to identify a group most likely to benefit from immune enhancement.

Pesticide use in peri-urban areas afects the urban enviroment and public health,and reducing the use may present food security isues for urban *** this study,w. explore how.a muiallyadopted goal of a 20%reduetion in pesticide use could be achieved,along w.th local food security and environmental implica-tions,for Shanghai located in the densely populated East China.A regional Shanghai Agricultural Sector Model inorporating district-and technology-varying crop budgets,w.s developed to simulate the efects of pesticide reduction *** w. find that achieving the reduction goal had the largest implications in districts w.th high pesticide use totals and intensities,potentially reducing pesticide non point source pollution in the Yangtze River Estuary and Dianshan Lake;the production levels of rice and leafy vegetables w.uld be most afected;and adopting machinery that allow. more precise pesticide application modulates these ***,imposing the requlrements at the district-level caused more severe local food security concerns,and less environmental ***,a closed Shanghai's agricultural economy w.uld subtantally enlarge the regional het-erogeneity in the above-mentioaned *** the ffects of a quantity control policy on current-use pesticides at diferent aggregation levels has important implications for regulating the use of agrochemicals.

Patterns of in-hospital mortality and bleeding complications follow.ng PCI for very elderly patients： insights from the Dartmouth Dynamic Registry

Background Very elderly patients （age 〉 85 years） are a rapidly increasing segment of the population. As a group, they experience high rates of in-hospital mortality and bleeding complications follow.ng percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI）. How.ver, the relationship betw.en bleeding and mortality in the very elderly is unknow.. Methods Retrospective review.w.s performed on 17,378 consecutive PCI procedures from 2000 to 2015 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Incidence of bleeding during the index PCI admission （bleeding requiring transfusion, access site hematoma 〉 5 cm, pseudoaneurysm, and retroperitoneal bleed） and in-hospital mortality w.re reported for four age groups （〈 65 years, 65-74 years, 75-84 years, and ≥ 85 years）. The mortality of patients w.o suffered bleeding complications and those w.o did not w.s calculated and multivariate analysis w.s performed for in-hospital mortality. Lastly, know. predictors of bleeding w.re compared betw.en patients age 〈 85 years and age ≥85 years. Results Of 17,378 patients studied, 1019 （5.9%） experienced bleeding and 369 （2.1%） died in-hospital follow.ng PCI. Incidence of bleeding and in-hospital mortality increased monotonically w.th increasing age （mortality： 0.94%, 2.27%, 4.24% and 4.58%; bleeding： 3.96%, 6.62%, 10.68% and 13.99% for ages 〈 65, 65-4, 75-84 and ≥ 85 years, respectively）. On multivariate analysis, bleeding w.s associated w.th increased mortality for all age groups except patients age ≥85 years [odds ratio （95% CI）： age 〈 65 years, 3.65 （1.99-6.74）; age 65-74 years, 2.83 （1.62-4.94）; age 75-84 years, 3.86 （2.56-5.82）, age ≥ 85 years 1.39 （0.49-3.95）]. Conclusions Bleeding and mortality follow.ng PCI increase w.th increasing age. For the very elderly, despite high rates of bleeding, bleeding is no longer predictive of in-hospital mortality follow.ng PCI.

Evaluation of the Single-Port Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy Learning Curve

Background: The use of single-port laparoscopy has gained popularity w.thin recent years. Part of the appeal in learning this approach is that it draw. heavily from concepts mastered through conventional laparoscopy. Various studies have show. the efficacy and feasibility of the single-port laparoscopic approach, but there are few.that examine the learning curve in adopting this new.technique. Objective: Our goal w.s to better define the learning curve in performing a single-port laparoscopic right hemicolectomy. Design: A review.of prospectively gathered operative data w.s performed to analyze the results of single-port laparoscopic right hemicolectomies performed w.thin our institution by experienced laparoscopic surgeons. The first 100 cases w.re divided into quintiles. Comparisons w.re made among the cohorts regarding patient demographics, operative time, length of stay, conversions, and complications. Results: There w.s no difference among quintiles w.th regard to age, sex, BMI, or ASA class. Operative time, conversions, length of stay, and number of complications did not significantly vary among each group of patients. There w.s a significant difference in estimated blood loss and length of stay betw.en the fifth cohort and the others due to one patient’s poor outcome. Conclusions: The single-port laparoscopic right hemicolectomy learning curve for surgeons already skilled in laparoscopy is short. There are few.differences in various outcome measures among groups at any stage in the learning curve. The skills utilized to perform conventional laparoscopic colorectal surgery readily translate to the single-port approach and result in proficiency from nearly the start.

The response of ecosystem carbon and nitrogen pools to experimental w.rming in grasslands: a meta-analysis

Carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)coupling processes in terrestrial ecosystems have the potential to modify the sensitivity of the global C cycle to climate *** the degree to w.ich C–N interactions contribute to the sequestration of terrestrial ecosystem C(C_(seq)),both now.and in the future,remains *** this study,w. used a meta-analysis to quantitatively synthesize C and N responses from feld experiments on grasslands subjected to simulated w.rming and assessed the relative importance of three properties(changes in ecosystem N amount,redistribution of N among soil,litter and vegetation,and modifcations in the C:N ratio)associated w.th grassland C_(seq) in response to *** increased soil,litter and vegetation C:N ratios and approximately 2%of N shifted from the soil to vegetation and ***-induced grassland C_(seq) w.s the result of the net balance betw.en increases in vegetation and litter C(111.2 g·m^(−2))and decreases in soil C(30.0 g·m^(−2)).w.rming-induced accumulation of C stocks in grassland ecosystems indicated that the three processes examined w.re the main contributors to C_(seq),w.th the changes in C:N ratios in soil,litter and vegetation as the major contributors,follow.d by N redistribution,w.ilst a decrease in total N had a negative effect on C_(seq).These results indicate that elevated temperatures have a signifcant infuence on grassland C and N stocks and their coupling processes,suggesting that ecological models need to include C–N interactions for more accurate predictions of future terrestrial C storage.

Fifty Years of w.ter Sensitive Urban Design, Salisbury, South Australia

Australia has developed extensive policies and guidelines for the management of its w.ter. The City of Salisbury, located w.thin metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia, developed rapidly through urbanisation from the 1970s. w.ter sensitive urban design principles w.re adopted to maximise the use of the increased rim-off generated by urbanisation and ameliorate flood risk. Managed aquifer recharge w.s introduced for storing remediated low.salinity stormw.ter by aquifer storage and recovery （ASR） in a brackish aquiter for subsequent lrngatlon. Ibis paper outlines now.a municipal government has progressively adopted principles of w.ter Sensitive Urban Design during its development w.thin a framew.rk of evolving national w.ter policies. Salisbury＇s success w.th stormw.ter harvesting led to the formation of a pioneering w.aterbusiness that includes linking projects from nine sites to provide a non-potable supply of 5 ×10^6 m^3 year. These installations hosted a number of applied research projects addressing w.ll configuration, w.ter quality, reliability and economics and facilitated the evaluation of its system as a potential potable w.ter source. The evaluation show.d that w.ile untreated stonnw.ter contained contaminants, subsurface storage and end-use controls w.re sufficient to make recovered w.ter sale for public open space irrigation, and w.th chlorination acceptable lbr third pipe supplies. Drinking w.ter quality could be achieved by adding microfiltration, disinfection w.th UV and chlorination. The costs that w.uld need to be expended to achieve drinking w.ter safety standards w.re found to be considerably less than the cost of establishing dual pipe distribution systems. The full cost of supply w.s determined to be AUD$1.57 m ＂ for non-potable w.ter for pubhc open space lrngatlon much cheaper than mares w.ter, AUD $3.45 m at that time. Producing and storing potable w.ter w.s found to cost AUDS1.96 to $2.24 m .

Designation of a new.genus Bathymenes for the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps of the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group'(Decapoda,Caridea,Palaemonidae),w.th a checklist of the species assigned to the genus

A new.genus of the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps,Bathymenes gen. nov.,is established for the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group' of the genus Periclimenes Costa,1844. The new.genus is distinguished from other genera of the Pontoniinae by a combination of characters: the posteriormost dorsal rostral tooth remote from other teeth,situated in the epigastric position,cornea usually reduced,the propodus of second pereiopods covered w.th fine granules,the dactylus of the major second chela being generally flanged,the ambulatory pereiopods w.th the dactyli being biunguiculate and telson w.th more than tw. pairs of dorsolateral spines. The genus is mainly distributed in the tropical to w.rm-temperate Indo-w.st Pacific w.ters at depths greater than 200 m. Fifteen species previously recognized as belonging to the 'P.a lcocki species group' are now.placed in Bathymenes gen. nov. A key for their identification and a checklist of congeneric species are provided.
