An Investigation into Cold-Therapy of the Equine Metacarpus, Following Temperature Changes with Exercise as Well as Post Intervention

There is some discussion as to whether exercise-induced hyperthermia of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) affects tenocyte viability and pre-disposes to injury. Cold-therapy is commonly used as a preventative measure and treatment for acute tendon injuries, but only a few studies have evaluated the effect of cold-therapy on metacarpal temperatures in the horse. For this reason, this study has measured skin surface temperatures after moderate exercise and after application of cold-therapy, and additionally monitored the duration of any effects. Four horses were recruited into a semi blinded controlled study with repeated measurements that involved lunged exercise for 16 minutes at moderate intensity. Skin surface temperature was measured using a thermographic camera before and after lunging, and every 40 minutes for two hours post cold-therapy. Cold-therapy was applied using a Jacks Whirlpool boot with ice-water immersion at a level just distal to the carpus for 20 minutes. The right leg was treated, and the left leg was used as an untreated control. The experiment was conducted twice on all four horses. Moderate exercise resulted in an increase in skin surface temperature of 10°C. Application of cold-therapy for 20 minutes resulted in a reduction in skin surface temperature by 14°C. The effect of cold-therapy persisted for at least 40 minutes post treatment. It is concluded that exercise leads to an increase in skin surface temperature which is counteracted by the application of cold-therapy. These findings would seem to indicate that cold-therapy can be used after exercise to counteract hyperthermia within the metacarpal region of the horse’s leg.

In this paper, we describe three different phenomena occurring on scales of 1 mm, 100 km, and almost a light year. The smallest scale is a laboratory experiment. The intermediate scale is a rocket-borne space experiment and the largest is an exploding star. In each case, deceleration creates a situation that is unstable to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The similarity exists in the spatial and in the Fourier domains;that is, not only are there obvious spatial similarities but the power spectra of the two phenomena are also nearly identical. The data compare favorably to published simulations.

Comparison of a New Magnetic Resonance Imaging Protocol and Magnetic Resonance Follow-Through in Patients with Inflammatory bowel Disease—A Prospective Pilot Study

Objective: Inflammatory bowel disease (IbD) is a chronic disease, consisting of two main subgroups: Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Imaging is an essential component in the treatment of IbD and is used repeatedly to determine activity and severity of inflammatory lesions. The aim of our study was to prospectively obtain pilot data on the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging with no oral contrast (MRI-NOC) and magnetic resonance follow-through (MRFT) using endoscopy as the reference standard. Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with CD and UC referred to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included in this study population. For the evaluation, the bowel was divided into 9 segments. Two radiologists, blinded to clinical findings, evaluated bowel wall thickness, diffusion weighted imaging and mural hyperenhancement. Results: 14 patients (9 males and 5 females;median age 41;range 20 - 62) underwent both type of MRI examinations;9 had CD and 5 had UC. The overall sensitivity for small bowel was zero for both MRI protocols, as neither identified any lesions, whereas in colon the sensitivity ranged from 7% to 29% in MRI-NOC and 14% - 29% in MRFT. Specificity and accuracy in MRI-NOC ranged from 78% to 98% and 74% - 93%, respectively, in small bowel, and from 90% to 96% and 77% - 82%, respectively, in colon. Specificity and accuracy in MRFT ranged from 83% to 100% and 79% - 95%, respectively, in small bowel, while it ranged from 93% to 97% and 81% - 85%, respectively, in colon. Conclusion: The location of lesions in the colon combined with the lack of oral contrast in the colon renders MRFT and MRI-NOC functionally identical.

Geoscience and high-level nuclear waste disposal： the Nordic scene

In Norden, two countries, Sweden and Finland, are actively engaged in site investigations for the location of deep repositories for spent nuclear fuel from powerproducing nuclear reactors. These investigations are being carried out in crystalline rocks of the Fennoscandian Shield. In Sweden, a long history of site selection has led to the identification and investigation of two sites, Forsmark and Laxemar/Simpevarp, based on a strategy of combining favourable bedrock with consent by the local population. Surface-based geoscientific investigations of the two candidates, with extensive deep drilling, are now drawing to a close. A proposal as to which of the sites would be most suitable for the development of a deep repository will be submitted to the governmental regulatory authorities in 2009. In Finland, the site selection process was shorter and less politically controversial, and led to a ＂Decision in Principle＂ by the Finnish parliament, in May 2001, to develop a deep repository at the Olkiluoto site. The access tunnel to an underground rock characterisation facility at 400-500 m depth is at present under construction, accompanied by extensive geoscientific investigations in the subsurface. An application for a construction licence for a deep repository will be submitted in 2012. Although all sites are located in Precambrian crystalline rocks, the Swedish homogeneous granitic rocks, sites both lie in relatively whilst the Finnish site is located in an heterogeneous migmatite complex. The Nordic approach to high-level nuclear waste disposal in crystalline rock will be the theme of a Topical Symposium at the 33rd International Geological Congress at Oslo, in August 2008, and the three sites mentioned above will be the focus of Congress Excursion no. 14.

Two-phase air-water flows: Scale effects in physical modeling

Physical modeling represents probably the oldest design tool in hydraulic engineering together with analytical approaches. In free surface flows, the similitude based upon a Froude similarity allows for a correct representation of the dominant forces, namely gravity and inertia. As a result fluid flow properties such as the capillary forces and the viscous forces might be incorrectly reproduced, affecting the air entrainment and transport capacity of a high-speed model flow. Small physical models operating under a Froude similitude systematically underestimate the air entrainment rate and air-water interfacial properties. To limit scale effects, minimal values of Reynolds or Weber number have to be respected. The present article summarizes the physical background of such limitations and their combination in terms of the Morton number. based upon a literature review, the existing limits are presented and discussed, resulting in a series of more conservative recommendations in terms of air concentration scaling. For other air-water flow parameters, the selection of the criteria to assess scale effects is critical because some parameters （e.g., bubble sizes, turbulent scales） can be affected by scale effects, even in relatively large laboratory models.

Temperature and composition dependent screw dislocation mobility in austenitic stainless steels from large-scale molecular dynamics

Extensive molecular dynamics simulations are performed to determine screw dislocation mobility in austenitic Fe_(0.7)NixCr_(0.3-x) stainless steels as a function of temperature ranging from 100 to 1300 K,resolved shear stress from 30 to 140 MPa,and Ni composition from 0.0 to 30.0 at%.These mobility data are fitted to a linear mobility law with a nonzero stress offset,referred to as the threshold *** find that both the linear drag coefficient and the threshold stress increase with Ni *** drag coefficient increases with temperature,whereas the threshold stress decreases with *** on these calculations,we determine fitting functions for the linear solute drag coefficient as a function of temperature and *** mobility laws determined in this study may serve to inform dislocation dynamics simulations pertinent to dislocation network evolution at elevated temperatures for a wide composition range of austenitic stainless steels.

Portal vein ligation accelerates tumor growth in ligated,but not contralateral lobes

AIM: To investigate the mechanisms of liver growth and atrophy after portal vein ligation (PVL) and its effects on tumor growth. METHODS: Mice were subjected to PVL, partial hepatectomy, or sham surgery. The morphological alterations, activation of transcription factors, and expression of cytokines and growth factors involved in liver regeneration were evaluated. In a separate set of experiments, murine colorectal carcinoma cells were injected via the portal vein and the effect of each operation on liver tumor growth was studied. RESULTS: Liver regeneration after PVL and partial hepatectomy were very similar. In ligated lobes, various cytokines, transcription factors and regulatory factors were signifi cantly upregulated compared to nonligated lobes after PVL. Atrophy in ligated lobes was a result of early necrosis followed by later apoptosis. Tumor growth was signifi cantly accelerated in ligated compared to non-ligated ***: Tumor growth was accelerated in ligated liver lobes and appeared to be a result of increased growth factor expression.
