Most wind turbines within wind farms are set up to face a pre-determined wind ***,wind directions are intermittent in nature,leading to less electricity production *** paper proposes an algorithm to solve the wind farm layout optimization problem considering multi-angular(MA)wind direction with the aim of maximizing the total power generated on wind farms and minimizing the cost of installation.A twostage genetic algorithm(GA)equipped with complementary sampling and uniform crossover is used to evolve a MA layout that will yield optimal output regardless of the wind *** the first stage,the optimal wind turbine layouts for 8 different major wind directions were determined while the second stage allows each of the previously determined layouts to compete and inter-breed so as to evolve an optimal MA wind farm *** proposed MA wind farm layout is thereafter compared to other layouts whose turbines have focused site specific wind turbine *** results reveal that the proposed wind farm layout improves wind power production capacity with minimum cost of installation compared to the layouts with site specific wind turbine *** paper will find application at the planning stage of wind farm.

Audiological characteristics of the contralateral ear in patients with unilateral physical non-explosive ear trauma

Objectives:To document the frequency of occurrence and types of symptoms experienced in the contralateral ear in patients with unilateral physical non-explosive(UPN)ear trauma and to compare the audio metric and tympano metric parameters between asymptomatic and symptomatic contralateral ***:Prospective analytical clinical study Setting:Specialized(Ear,Nose,and Throat)clinic of a tertiary health ***:Patients with UPN ear trauma who presented within the first week of the *** outcome measures:Otologic symptoms in the contralateral ear in UPN ear trauma Results:Eighteen out of 53 patients(34.0%)experienced symptoms in the contralateral *** symptoms were tinnitus in 77.8%(14/18),hearing loss in 66.7%(12/18),and ear blockage in 27.8%(5/18).There was hearing loss in 38/53(71.7%)of contralateral *** loss type and PTAv at the low frequencies were not significantly different(p=0.142),but other audiometric parameters were significantly different between asymptomatic and symptomatic contralateral ears(p<0.05 in all).Type C tympanogram was more prominent in the symptomatic contralateral *** was a statistically-significant difference in the type of tympanogram between the two categories of patients(p=0.018).There was no difference in acoustic reflex between the two categories of patients(p=0.095).Conclusions:The contralateral ear may be affected in up to one-third of patients with UPN ear trauma,and experience otologic symptoms similar to those of the traumatized *** and audiometric parameters were abnormal in most of the contralateral *** two ears must be assessed thoroughly in cases of UPN ear trauma.

A new inter-cluster DC capacitor voltage balancing scheme for a delta connected modular multilevel cascaded converter (MMCC)-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is presented. A detailed power flow analysis of applying negative sequence current (NSC) and zero-sequence current (ZSC) injection methods in addressing the issue of inter-cluster DC voltage imbalance under unbalance grid voltage is carried out. A control scheme is proposed which integrates both inter-cluster methods using a quantification factor QF. This is used to achieve the sharing of the inter-cluster active power between the NSC and ZSC injection methods. An accurate method of determining the quantification factor is also presented. The proposed method offers better sub-module DC capacitor voltage balancing and prevents converter overcurrent. The influence of unbalanced grid voltage on the delta connected MMCC-based STATCOM rating using this integrated cluster balancing technique is investigated. The control scheme is verified with a 5 kV 1.2MVA MMCC-STATCOM using 3-level bridge sub-modules, and the results show the advantages of the proposed method over other inter-cluster methods.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is emerging as a new clinical disorder among children and adolescents. Although there is increasing prevalence of this clinical entity among adolescents worldwide, its diagnosis among Nigerian children and adolescents is still uncommon, hence, the reason many physicians still misdiagnose T2DM in adolescents as type 1 diabetes mellitus for reason of age of onset. Here, we present a 15-year old, overweight, girl who presented with history of polyuria, polydipsia and weight loss;her blood glucose level was 14.3 mmol/l, glycated haemoglobin 12.4% and glycosuria (3+), with no ketonuria or proteinuria. She was initially diagnosed as type 1 diabetes and managed with multiple doses of insulin by the pediatric team until she was later reviewed by the endocrinology unit. The diagnosis was later changed to early-onset T2DM (Youth-onset T2DM) based on a BMI of 29.75 kg/m2, presence of acanthosis nigricans, absence of ketosis, preserved beta-cell function as shown by normal serum C-peptide levels, absence of anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibodies and islet cell antibody, and also response to oral anti-diabetic agents while her insulin therapy was discontinued. Therefore, a possibility of T2DM should be suspected in childhood and adolescent with diabetes associated with overweight or obesity, relatives with T2DM and features of insulin resistance (IR) like acanthosis nigricans, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hyperandrogenism, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Germination of Seeds of Selected Leguminous Tree Species Moistened with Varying Concentrations of Crude Oil-Contaminated Soil Water Extracts

The study investigates the germination of selected leguminous tree species (LTS) native to the forest ecosystem and oil producing areas of Nigeria. Germination experiments of 250 seeds from each of the selected members of the Fabaceae family: Bauhinia monandra (Kurz), Delonix regia (Boj. ex Hook.) Raf. and Tetrapleura tetraptera (Schum. & Thonn.) Taubert were conducted in petri dishes double-layered with Whatman No. 1 filter papers for 10 days and moistened with varying concentrations of crude oil contaminated soil water extracts (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ml), with a view to determining the ability of these plants to germinate and establish in soil polluted with crude oil. The mean percentage germination of each tree species was thus determined. All the LTS germinated, but germination was concentration dependent, as percentage germination decreased with increased oil concentrations. Evaluation of the initial growth responses and tolerances of these LTS in oil-polluted soil may provide useful information about the potential of these plant species for phytoremediation.

Numerical investigation of droplet pre-dispersion in a monodisperse droplet spray dryer

Monodisperse droplet spray dryers have great advantages in particle formation through spray drying because of their ability to produce uniform sized particles. Experimental analyses of this system have shown that droplets atomized through the piezoceramic nozzle need to be sufficiently well dispersed before entering the drying chamber to achieve sufficiently dried particles. However, the dispersion dynamics cannot be readily observed because of experimental limitations, and key factors influencing the dispersion state currently remain unclear. This study carried out numerical simulations for droplet dispersions in the dispersion chamber, which allow this important process to be visualized. The system- atic and quantitative analyses on the dispersion states provide valuable data for improving the design of the dispersion chamber, and optimizing the spray drying operation.
