The Pittsburgh IDDM morbidity a.d morta.ity study reported grea.er tha. 10 fold corona.y hea.t disea.e morta.ity compa.ed with US na.iona. da.a.[1]. a.ults with dia.etes ha.e hea.t disea.e dea.h ra.es 2 to 4 times higher tha. a.ults without dia.etes [2]. Dia.etic ca.diomyopa.hy expla.ns much of this surviva. difference a.d ca.nitine deficiency is a.ca.se of ca.diomyopa.hy. Resea.ch Design a.d Methods: a.ult subjects (40) with type 1 dia.etes mellitus were seen for a.routine a.nua. visit ha.ing no clinica. compla.nts. Fa.ting serum sa.ples were collected for a.nua. chemistries a.d the mea.urement of ca.nitine. Results: The mea. tota. (40.8 ± 8.8) [40 - 80 nmol/ml] a.d free (32.9 ± 7.9) [30 - 60 nmol/ml] ca.nitine levels for this group included 43% low tota. a.d 28% low free ca.nitine. The mea. esterified/free (E/F) ca.nitine ra.io (0.25 ± 0.09) for this group wa. eleva.ed indica.ing ca.nitine insufficiency. Conclusions: Fa.ty a.ids a.e the prima.y energy source for dia.etic hea.t muscle, a.d ca.nitine is essentia. for intra.ellula. fa.ty a.id tra.sport a.d a.P production. Therefore, mild ca.nitine deficiency ca. compromise fa.ty a.id energy production in a.fa.ling hea.t. Ca.nitine deficiency in subjects a. high risk for ca.diova.cula. fa.lure is a.possible unrecognized rea.on for the 4 fold increa.ed dea.h ra.e in pa.ients with type 1 dia.etes. Supplementa.ion with ora. ca.nitine could reduce tha. increa.ed risk of hea.t fa.lure, in pa.ients with type 1 dia.etes. Intra.enous ca.nitine ma. be life sa.ing when ma.a.ing a.ute ca.dia. fa.lure in pa.ients with dia.etes mellitus. Norma. ca.nitine levels in pa.ients with type 1 dia.etes ma. provide a.biochemica. environment tha. prevents the long recognized idiopa.hic hea.t fa.lure tha. occurs in insulin requiring dia.etics a. first reported in the 1974 Fra.ingha. The competition between cora. a.d a.ga. in ma.ine reefs is perva.ive through geologic time;tha. competition determines the structure a.d composition of reef communities, which we see in the fossil record. However, the rela.ionships between cora. a.d ca.ca.eous a.ga. in reefs a.e poorly understood. To study this rela.ionship, severa. ha.d sa.ples a.d thin sections were exa.ined from nine different fora.ga. reef loca.ities a.ound the world. Fora.ga. reefs typica.ly extend from a.out 20 m depth or sha.lower on the sea.a.d side of the reef. The first section is Sa.t Mounta.n, a.a.a.a. which preserves a.Pa.eocene reef. It conta.ns a.high percenta.e of red cora.line a.ga. with benthic fora.inifera. The second section is IDOP-U1376, IIa.Limestone, it is Middle Eocene, in the form of a. isola.ed reef sa.dwiched between two igneous beds. The third section is the Utoe’ Limestone, New Ca.edonia. it is Middle Eocene in a.e a.d is composed ma.nly of gra.n-boundstone units with some igneous interla.ered. The fourth section is the Da.na. Forma.ion in the West-Da.na. roa.cut section, Northea.t Libya. it is Middle Eocene in a.e, it is composed of highly fossiliferous limestone (cora.s, red cora.line a.ga., echinoids, mollusks, fora.inifers, a.d bryozoa.s). The fifth section, the a. Ba.da.Forma.ion (a.ga. Limestone Member) in Northea.t Libya. is in the Dra.a.a.—a. a.ya. roa.cut, Northea.t Libya. it ha. severa. species of a.ga. but a.so includes a.high percenta.e of buildups of cora. species. The sixth section is the Oligo-Miocene a. Fa.diya. Forma.ion (a. Fa.a.a. Cement Qua.ry) limestone unit in Northea.t Libya. The seventh section is (Core-core 20) la.e-ea.ly to middle Miocene Limestone Unit-Cicuco Field, NW Colombia. The eighth section is the Bengha.i Forma.ion a. Both linea.-spring-da.hpot （LSD） a.d non-linea. Hertzia.-spring-da.hpot （HSD） conta.t models a.e commonly used for the ca.cula.ion of conta.t forces in Discrete Element Method （DEM） simula.ions of gra.ula. systems. Despite the popula.ity of these models, determina.ion of suita.le va.ues for the conta.t pa.a.eters of the simula.ed pa.ticles such a. stiffness, da.ping coefficient, coefficient of restitution, a.d simula.ion time step, is not a.together obvious. In this work the rela.ionships between these conta.t pa.a.eters for a.model system where a.pa.ticle impa.ts on a.fla. ba.e a.e exa.ined. Recommenda.ions a.e ma.e concerning the determina.ion of these conta.t pa.a.eters for use in DEM simula.ions.

Wa.er-repellent(WR) soil grea.ly influences infiltra.ion beha.ior. This resea.ch determined the impa.ts of WR levels of silt loa. soil la.er during infiltra.ion. Three column scena.ios were utilized, including homogeneous wetta.le silt loa. or sa.d, silt loa. over sa.d(silt loa./sa.d), a.d sa.d over silt loa.(sa.d/silt loa.). a.5-cm thick silt loa. soil la.er wa. pla.ed either a. the soil surfa.e or 5 cm below the soil surfa.e. The silt loa. soil used ha. been trea.ed to produce different WR levels, wetta.le, slightly WR, strongly WR, a.d severely WR. a. the WR level increa.ed from wetta.le to severely WR, the cumula.ive infiltra.ion decrea.ed. Tra.itiona. wetting front-rela.ed equa.ions did not a.equa.ely describe the infiltra.ion ra.e a.d time rela.ionships for la.ered WR soils. The Kostia.ov equa.ion provided a.good fit for the first infiltra.ion sta.e. a.era.e infiltra.ion ra.es for wetta.le, slightly WR, strongly WR, a.d severely WR during the 2 nd infiltra.ion sta.e were 0.126, 0.021, 0.002, a.d 0.001 mm min^(-1) for the silt loa./sa.d scena.io,respectively, a.d 0.112, 0.003, 0.002, a.d 0.000 5 mm min^(-1) for the sa.d/silt loa. scena.io, respectively. Pseudo-sa.ura.ion phenomena.occurred when visua.ly exa.ining the wetting fronts a.d from the a.pa.ent cha.ges in wa.er content(?θ_(a.)) a. the slightly WR,strongly WR, a.d severely WR levels for the silt loa./sa.d scena.io. Much la.ger ?θa.va.ues indica.ed the possible existence of finger flow. Dela.ed wa.er penetra.ion into the surfa.e soil for the strongly WR level in the silt loa./sa.d scena.io suggested nega.ive wa.er hea.s with infiltra.ion times longer tha. 10 min. The silt loa./sa.d soil la.ers produced sha.p tra.sition zones of wa.er content. The WR level of the silt loa. soil la.er ha. grea.er effects on infiltra.ion tha. the la.er position in the column.

To eva.ua.e phylogenetic rela.edness a. a.proxy for susceptibility to Ba.illus thuringiensis （Bt） when selecting species to a.t a. surroga.es for others in prerelea.e test- ing, we exa.ined the responses of 11 la.ora.ory-rea.ed lepidoptera. colonies, comprising members of 2 fa.ilies, 5 genera. a.d 9 species, to a.commercia. Bt prepa.a.ion. Sur- viva., pupa. ma.s, a.d timing of pupa.ion a.d a.ult emergence of 2 noctuids （Spodoptera.litura.a.d Helicoverpa.a.migera. a.d 7 tortricids （Cnepha.ia.ja.ta.a.a. Ctenopseustis obliqua.a. Ctenopseustis hera.a. Pla.otortrix octo, Pla.otortrix notopha.a. Pla.otor- trix excessa.a.[2 different la.ora.ory colonies], a.d Epiphya. postvitta.a.[2 colonies]） were exa.ined a.ter feeding first insta. la.va. with a.tificia. diet conta.ning 5 μL/100 mL Dipel ES （Bt subsp, kursta.i）. Bt ca.sed significa.t la.va. morta.ity in a.l species except S. litura. in which only pupa.ion wa. dela.ed compa.ed with untrea.ed controls. Neither of the noctuid species tested would a.t a. a.suita.le surroga.e for the other in tests of Bt impa.ts on surviva.. With the exception of the 2 colonies orE. postvitta.a. which differed from ea.h other not only in their responses to Bt but a.so in their development times when not trea.ed with Bt, species within ea.h tortricid genus ha. simila. responses to Bt a.d thus could a.t a. surroga.es for ea.h other. Members of different genera.within this fa.ily could represent ea.h other only if rela.ively coa.se mea.urement endpoints （e.g., toxic or not） were considered a.equa.e for a.sessing risks to nonta.get species in the field.
